Don't spread that crap, even if you are trying to be sarcastic. there will be some person that reads that and spreads it around. The AMA is working their ass off to ge tthat idea out of the publics head, all it ends up doing is hurting ALL riders by more land closure and more laws on bikes.

Loud pipes do not save lives. Smart and reactive riding does. I ride every day in rush hour type traffic, I hate it but I'm not giving up my right to ride.

umm, what was I spreading exactly? The guy asked a question and so I answered it for him. Ok so super loud pipes aren't legal in all places, but in my understanding that is how those with them justify those exhausts.

To be honest though louder exhausts have helped me see some bikes out there, granted I try and keep a look out for bikes around me but being able to hear them is nice as I can know where they are without constantly watching them with my eyes in the mirror.

Also I have no issue you you riding, more power to you. If i needed a bike I would probably own one.

Not really sure why you took this so personally.

Hearing them is one thing, thinking there are transformers battling it out somewhere behind you is another thing.

This coming from someone who used to ride before his accident.

Nah, never mind the anonymous note. Just go over some time when he's outside, and ask him about his bike. Act interested, give him a few ooohs and aaahs. Comment about the deep throaty rumble it makes when it's running.......

Then add something to the effect of, "Yeah, sure is nice having that to listen to, at 11PM, when I'm trying to sleep.......", smile, and walk back to your house.

If he still doesn't get it, call the cops on his ass. Most places I've lived have laws about disturbing the peace, and limit noise from any source from 10PM to 6AM.

Riders often claim that "loud pipes save lives" - that they are more likely to notice the attention of distracted motorists when they are on the road. There is no study on record or statistical correlation between the noise level of a motorcycle and its ability to reduce accidents.

The noise decreases a rider's ability to hear pedestrians and other vehicles. That includes emergency vehicles, such as police cars, ambulances and firetrucks.

It should be noted that motorcycles are also equipped with horns, just like automobiles.

Take Action

Do not approach or attempt to reason with riders. When possible, take down their license plate number and call the police.

Learn the existing noise codes in your community and how it applies to motorcycles. Lobby officials for a stronger noise codes against motorcycle noise.

Lobby police to increase patrols and fines for offenders.

Talk to your neighbors and organize; work with community groups and raise the issue of motorcycle noise.

If you see a motorcycle shop opening up in your community, organize with community groups and send a clear message that the sale and installation of non street-legal exhaust systems will not be tolerated.

Responsible riders and motorcycle clubs should advocate the use of legal exhaust systems.

Sign up at Yahoo! Groups NoiseOFF and connect with others who are working to reduce the problem in their own community.

Yeah, is that what people do when they are annoyed by crying babies? Don't you wish those people would REALIZE how fvcking annoying it is for everybody else? Some people simply don't care as long as they're ok with it. /shakes head in disgust.

That car isn't any louder than the pretentiousness coming from a BMW X5 SUV driven by an asian man. Why don't you tell us what you really think of that guy and his lowly Pontiac.

Oh for fuck's sake. Have we really become such a nation of passive-aggressive pantywaists that we can't just walk up to the other person like an adult and say, "Hey, I like your bike and I know you really enjoy riding it, but sometimes when you start it up at 11pm it will wake me up when I've just gotten to sleep. Can you maybe wait to really get on the throttle until you're out of the neighborhood?"? Any advice that advocates taking something like this directly to the police instead of just being an adult and talking about it is a bunch of bull. Grow a pair and actually talk with the person.

Its the opposite here, cops don't like bikes, especially if they have mods.

Obviously you don't realize the type of douchebag that has a loud bike or car stereo to begin with. These retards know the noise they are making and there is no reasoning with them. I've tried and it just doesn't work.

Not to mention, telling someone I like their bike when I think it's an obnoxious pile of shit is more passive aggressive than sending an anonymous, non threatening letter.

Be persistent, op. You deserve to live in a quiet neghborhood.

I feel your pain ... there are many idiots who ride with illegal exhausts and the police do nothig about it. There is a guy who lives about 12 houses down who owns one of those "choppers". My house vibrates every time he starts it ... 500 feet away.

May I suggest a loud air horn. Every time he runs his bike (with the illegal exhaust) go out in your front yard and blast away. It will get his attention and possibly the neighbors and maybe even the police.

Better yet, blast it in front of his house at 3 a.m.

move to somewhere with an HOA and stop trying to impose your 'rules' on neighbors. My neighbor has three Harley's and likes to get out early. I am used to it now...it's part of living in a community.

I like my freedoms.

If what he is doing is illegal (noise ordinance) then tell him about it.

Actually, part of living in a community is respecting your neighbors. This means keeping noise to a minimum which includes barking dogs, loud music and loud vehicles. It's quite simple really.

Wrong, depends on the community and your neighbors. It's those that want quiet, dislike barking dogs, loud music and loud vehicles that feel others need to to make a community.

In some buying 30 chickens to start an egg farm is totally ok even though those that moved into it try to complain.

The side pipes on my vette are louder than most other vehicles. I'll tell you if I got some pussy note in my mailbox, threatening me with the cops, I'd be pulling into my driveway late with the engine screaming, if someone came to me and said 'look, my kids are trying to sleep, please keep it down', they'd get a much better reaction.

As a rule, do try to keep it reasonable in any residential area, this beast will set off car alarms as I putt thru parking lots.

My wife's actually considering this one to combat all the barking dogs in our neighborhood apparently noone can stop you from keeping a couple chickens to provide eggs for yourself, antique laws are the best ones

Loud pipes do not save lives, as has been noted.

Furthermore, I believe there was a thread here awhile back that had a link to motorcycle accident statistics.....and the vast majority of motorcycle accidents, even the ones where a car hit a bike, are the fault of the rider.

I don't think that is true. No one can say that loud pipes never saved a motorcyclist. The debate is really that everyone is claiming this is the reason. Much like those that insist they have to have [popular product] because [they need it, not trying to be popular].

much of motorcycle accidents are self inflicted. However our motorcycle population rose 3x in the last couple years, but accidents only increased about 10%.

You wouldn't pull that shit in my neighborhood. If you did, the fines would get progressively higher each time you did it. Good luck with that.

The vast majority of people understand and keep things quiet in their community. It's the random dumbfuck that feels he needs to be seen and/or heard. A cry for attention is all the louds pipes on motorcycles or cars are for. Same thing goes for boom cars.

Motorcycle accidents have been increasing for years...over a decade, IIRC.

I wouldn't say that loud pipes NEVER saved a cyclist, but the Harley folks seem to recite it as one of their mantras, and overall it is NOT true. It's just them trying to keep from having to run mufflers. It's ridiculous how loud a Harley is....there's no street-legal muffler you can put on a car with a freaking big-block that will make it as loud as a straight-piped Harley is.
