3. No, you don't need it, but it makes connecting new computers to the LAN much simpler for those unfamiliar with networking.

All DHCP does, is assign IP numbers to computers connected to the DHCP server, rather than having to fill that info in manually. My LAN at home is a mix of DHCP machines and Static IP machines. All my servers (web, mail, FTP) are static. All my everyday boxes are DHCP.

The purpose of using Static IP's on my servers is to make sure that if the box goes down for some reason that the IP assigned to the router wont be used up by another machine. That would be bad since I am forwarding specific ports to a specific IP. If that IP was taken by another machine, the ports would be routed to the wrong machine.

That is a nice FAQ! I would add that (1) you only want one dhcp server on your network. So, for example, if you are trying to use 2 routers, you generally should disable dhcp on one of them. (2) On wireless networks, some people recommend disabling dhcp. That way, some laptop that wanders into range won't get assigned an IP address. (3) If you are going to have some fixed ip addresses while having others assigned dynamically via dhcp, the fixed ones should be outside the range that your dhcp server assigns. That way, you avoid a situation where dhcp assigns the same ip address as one of your fixed ips. For example, your dhcp might have assigned a pc the ip of 192.168.0.5. You then plug in a Netgear ME102 WAP, which has a default fixed ip of 192.168.0.5. So, 2 devices now have the same IP. To avoid this, change the ME102's fixed IP to something like 192.168.0.101.

If you running a linksys router for the networking and go to DHCP Tab and turn off the DHCP and apply the settings for the router.

SMC Config. menu looks like a Web Page; you use the Internet Browser to log in using http://192.168.123.254

Frame page comes up, and when you log in you have a left frame menu:

" Misc Items
" Wireless

Log Out

When you choose the DHCP Server the main panel has the following options.

Item Setting:
DHCP Server Disable Enable

Domain Name
