good to see people still interested in this
the brackets that can be moded to work with stock coolers have 4 little tiny bumps in the inner corner of the plastic, theys can be sawed off or dremeld off to make the entire bracket an even level

a cooler running cpu. the purpose of the ihs is to distribute the heat coming from the small core to a larger surface area, thus allowing for better dissipation of heat. if you have a good hsf, you will be able to do just that w/o the need of having the ihs. so far, i've only heard of drops in temp from removing the ihs. I've heard people range from a 3-10C drop.

Hey Mik3y...glad you found this post helpful enough to bump it again...
As I said before for me it was like 6-8 degrees less without IHS.
The cheap silicon grease AMD uses just makes heat dissipation less effective than a directly applied copper cooler with AS5, be it air or water. Even despite the IHS is made of plated copper...
For the people in fear of crushing the core it may even help to just replace the thermal paste with AS5 and put the IHS in place again...

i havent done it yet, but is it difficult to remove the ihs? i keep reading about the dangers on the process of its removal, but off the top of my head, i think it's quite simple, though i should still be cautious.

Just prepare a razorblade like in the pic I posted for Zebo above.
And make sure you do not cut in too deep what could ruin the capacitors. Start where the breathing hole is and run around 2-3 times...nice and easy...

The pics are working today, but when I posted that, only a blank or white square image appeared.

If I got Water Cooling, I wouldn't have to worry about crushing the core right? Now I wonder how cool my WC (which I'll bet getting in a month) will cool it down. Still wondering wether it's worth it. Maby for record low temps with WC, sure why the hell not .

Would I have to modify the screws or brackes for a WC setup for a "naked" Opteron?

It's always worth it...if you know what you're doing. My Opteron also gained (or better lost) 5C by removing the IHS (pics/story see here).
Depending on your setup and what screws or brackets it uses you may have to modify as the core is lower than the IHS what the coolers are designed for...

i'm almost tempted to remove the IHS on one of my Opties but i dont think the AC Freezer 64pro mounts well on naked chips.

I have a question concerning this CPU cooler.

I have a Opteron 175 processor with a Zalman CNPS9500 CPU cooler.
I want to unlid (remove the IHS) from this processor for better cooling. Currently I personally find it running to hot (overclocked the CPU at 2750 Mhz. / 1.53v).

But I want to make sure the Zalman CNPS9500 cooler will fit back on after removing the IHS without problems.

It also says "modified screws", what does that mean?

Any advice / help / suggestions would helpful!
Thanks in advance.

/edit

Would a shim / CPU spacer help when installing the CPU cooler after removing the IHS?

I belive you should be able to stick the 9500 on the bare chip since its retention thing lowers it onto the cpu and adds pressure. I was contemplating whether or not to try it with my new opty165.....pending possibilty

Hehehe... Yeah I figured that as well... But I am going to be sure and try to get a CPU spacer / shim from somewhere. Just to make sure. Better be safe then sorry imho.

And I don't have money to burn yet, so...

The only thing is; those CPU spacers / shims are hard to get, at least overhere in the Netherlands

Has anyone done this with a Pentium 4? I have a northwood I'd like to try this with when I get my new System.

I'm not sure if that's even possible with Intel CPUs.

Yup, you'll more than likely crack the core. Those P4's are glued on, or use some type of adhesive.
