How to unlock Pipelines and Vertex Shader on a 6800 (nu/le/gs)

I don't think that it is unusual to have a card that can't be successfully unlocked. It's speculated that some of the GPU's in 6800's are used in the 12 pipeline cards because they don't have 16 healthy pipelines and couldn't be used in GT's or Ultra's. I can't find an informative poll anymore, but when Guru3D ran one, the success (unlocked pipelines artifact-free) rate on softmod was about 50% based on around 300 attempts as I recall. That seems about right based on my limited experience w/4 6800's (2 brands). Unfortunately there's no guarantee that the 6800's we buy will have 16 healthy pipelines.

Yeah, devINVISIBLE it is not a GUARANTEE that your pipes work. If you get any sort of graphics corruption (not just limited to artifacts), then it is the pipes being damaged. See if locking them back up and unlocking only the Vertex Shader works. Remember, you can't be upset because you got what you paid for. :\

Edit: Rereading your above post, it should say custom (16x1, 6vp) in the dropdown box. Also, do NOT check "Unlock Professional Capabilities" as that will softmod your card to a Quadro 4000... which may explain some of your artifacting. Try, first, uninstalling RivaTuner and your drivers, and doing the entire process over again after installing a new set of drivers. Perhaps checking the Professional Capabilities box screwed something up somewhere.

i'll try that... im actually going to bring the card over to a friends PC tonight and see if i dont have any luck with it over there... i'll let you know

hah... brought it over my buddies place to put in his pc. After changing the videocard, his mobo didnt work. He gets pulsing noises even with nothing installed. After looking around online, we found out this is not a good thing (;-)) and his mobo is most likely fried. Interesting....

Nice thread.....all this has convinced me not to soft-mod. I have better things to do with $250 than replacing a trashed card. BTW, I have read elsewhere that achieving an artifact free mod is more of an exception than the rule.

Where did you read that? I think that over time it's been more like 50/50 chance of success (my experience w/4 cards matches that too) but I'm interested in other factual info.

See, the beauty about this is it is a purely driver level tweak-- meaning it does absolutely nothing physical to the card itself. If you take your 6800 (16x6) out of your computer and plop it into a friend's, it will not have the pipes / vertex unlocked. That also explains the fact that you can just uninstall RivaTuner and the softmod will disappear. As stated previously, harming your card physically is probably the last thing this softmod will do... and it's very unlikely it will happen.

6800's are cards that may not be suited to be a 6800 Ultra for a few reasons: Damaged pipelines, damaged vertex shader, or unable to reach Ultra clock speeds. Instead of just pitching them, they mask 4 pipelines, 1 vertex shader, use 128MB of DDR1, and reduce the clock speeds down to 325/700. Now one or some (or even all) of these don't have to be damaged in order for them to downgrade. For example, you have a card that cannot hit 375MHz on the core... instead of throwing the card out, you drop the clock speed down to 325MHz, mask 4 pipelines (which are FULLY FUNCTIONAL), mask a vertex shader (which is ALSO FULLY FUNCTIONAL), and use 128mb of DDR1 RAM on it. That will, theorteically, enable a successful softmod.

You can also say the same about any of the other problems listed, except of course if the problem is related to the pipes; which in that case, you will not be able to softmod it for obvious reasons.

I agree. From what I've gathered, it's a 50/50 shot.

Once you unlock the pipelines and vertex shader, do they remain unlocked even after reinstalling the OS (or if done in Windows, are they also going to be unlocked in Linux on a multi-boot system)? And what about if CMOS is reset? I would assume these things would have no effect on it and that the card will remain unlocked indefinitely, but I want to be sure.

It remains unlocked as long as Rivatuner is installed and tells it to unlock. If windows goes into hibernation and wakes back up this will relock the pipes until the next reboot though. It was a bug with nvstrap atleast it was around Nov.

It doesn't need to run in the background. It will keep it unlocked until RivaTuner is uninstalled.

Good Question... anybody know if just installing RivaTuner 2.o RC15.4, and NOT modding anything, if BFG Tech would not honor the lifetime warranty? How could the card be affected?

Thanks. Was just curious because BFG states the warranty is void if the card has been OC'd.. how can they tell it was OC'd (other than possible heat damage) if only driver controlled?

Thanks for the great post! I thought I'd add that when I unlocked both pixel and vertex shaders, I ran rthdribl and saw huge random triangles all over the place. So I locked the vertex shader and kept the pixel shaders unlocked and I have no artifacts in rthdribl or 3dmark 2003 or 2005.

Unlocking just the pixel shaders boosted me from 3448 to 3688 in 3dmark 2005.

Thanks for this info! I was able to unlock my Gigabyte 6800's 4 extra pipes (but not the shader; got artifacts with that turned on) and got a nice little 3Dmark05 increase!
