How to use a WAP within my own Private Network

Does anyone know the answer to this, I have been trying very hard to search the forums and google but cant seem to find the answer.

I have a Wireless Access Point that I am sharing with a friend from upstairs. However, I want to set up my own private network but wanting to use his WAP as my internet provider so I can surf the web.

FRIEND's CABLE MODEM -> FRIEND'S ROUTER/WAP -----> SOME DEVICE TO CAPTURE THIS WAP -> MY OWN PRIVATE NETWORK

What do I need to have to capture that wireless signal and then share it amongst my own private network of wired computers and possibly wireless laptops?

Any help is highly appreciated.

You need a wireless bridge to interface with the access point. Your plan sounds like you'll be double NATing, this may or may not be a problem, but it is something you should be aware of.

so the wireless bridge i use that to connect to the WAP. Can I attach my computers to a Wireless bridge?

Can some routers double as a wireless bridge as well? or does it have to be a dedicated wireless bridge?

yes, you attach your wired computers to the wireless bridge. some routers can double as a bridge, depends on the make/model.

Get a Wireless Cable/DSL Router that is DD-WRT flashable.

Flash with DD_WRT, and configure as a Client Bridge.
You can then plug 3 computer with wires, and plug you wap to the 4th jack to have local Wireless.

thanks guys, i have an ASUS router that allows for it to be an Wireless Bridge. Ill test it and if it works than ill be happy

so i tested it with a netgear router and used it as an wireless ethernet bridge and a repeater bridge. The thing is that the IP address for the computer is being set up through the original router, but I want it to be set up by the repeater.

Is this how it works? I changed the repeater IP address to 192.168.33.1 instead of 192.168.1.1 so they dont overlap.

You can not have two subnets and maintain one cohesive Network.

Router #1: Attached to Cable Modem - Wired Ethernet & Wireless Ethernet (ASUS_WIRELESS). Router IP address is set to 192.168.1.1



Router #2 (Netgear): Set as a Repeater Bridge on (ASUS_WIRELESS). This router's IP Address is set to 192.168.33.1


This is what I want to do:
1. Connect a PC through a wired ethernet to Router #2 and set up an IP address of 192.168.33.100. This PC will be able to go to the internet due to the repeater bridge. This computer can also view all computers connected to Router #2.
2. All PCs connected to Router #1 cannot see what computers are connected to Router #2.


What can and cannot be done?
