How tough are P4 cpu's ?

I'm working on a system that the fan failed on the cpu cooler. I haven't received the new cooler yet, but was I wondering how well P4's hold up to overheating. I know that athlons can take almost no cooling failures, but am not up on how well a p4 will take it.

They will downclock themselves in order to stop burning up. Tomshardware had videos of a few CPUs from AMD and Intel. When the heatsink was removed from the P4, the Q3 demo they were running dropped to 1-2fps, but it still played. Once the HS\Fan was put back on, it resumed normal speed.

When they did this with the older AMDs, they burnt up pretty fast, one almost went into flames

At any rate, agressor is correct... Your P4 should be fine.

I did read the post and they don?t say it voids the warranty if u run it without a fan for the fun of saying it.

Unless I am reading the post incorrectly... The cooling failed. He didn't run it without a fan intentionally.

The fan on my 1.4 tbird didnt start when I started once. But my bios was set it to turn off when themp was 70C that was the lowest I could select this was before C.O.P. When I went into the bios imidiatly after my temp was 74! The next restart the fan went on and the system kept going. And I just sold that system to a friend!

I believe most new amd boards have thermal features so I believe in most instances with newer mobos both p4's and amd chips can survive that kind of failure.

The toughness issue so be raised in terms of the unprotected glass core of the athlon which even to this day is repeated chiped and cracked by users. Intels implementation of a IHS (integrated heat spreader) is nice for the way that type of contact is avoided.

I have even seen on this board temps upwards 85C... They even say it ran for weeks, and continue to run at the moment :Q

The 'thermal throttling' on P4 chips works pretty good, so you should be OK. AMD chips however go from working to 'OMG whats that smell' in just a few seconds. The mobo shutdown just doesn't seem to be fast enough.

As long as u got newer mobo any processor type is fine....
