I remember my very own first computer was a 386SX-20 Mhz machine with little memory back in 1990 or 1991. Windows 3.1 was so slow on that machine, I remember I used to use DOS versions of all the programs I could - Wordperfect 5.1, Lotus 123, etc. I even remembers going out and buying a "DOS Rules" bumper sticker, because I was bemoaning the advent of a GUI and all that WYSIWYG crap they were toughting back then.

Then of course, as I bought my next computer with a 486DX-50Mhz processor, Windows 3.1 went to 95/98 and all was well.

I think the first decent Windows OS I used was Windows 2000 Professional, and I still use that to this day.

I too went from an Amiga (god I loved my machines) to a 486 sx25 ,4 meg memory and a 120mb HDD and it only had DOS.First day I got the PC I sat trying to work out what the hell to do with it in DOS,kept getting syntax errors, refusals to do anything without typing half the alphabet after each command (-p,-r,-wtf ) and thinking "what the hell have i done?? I want my Amiga back,I bought this POS so I could play Eye of the Beholder not sit looking at a cursor and a black screen"

Personally if I could get EVERYTHING i want to run on a nix system I think I'd go for it and stick bindows in the bin.

BUT I gotta admit after struggling in DOS that Windows is a vast improvement, just hope Vista is an improvement and they actually bring out NEW versions unlike shoehorning the new features into a program that's basically 10 years out of date like XP,ME,2000 etc etc.

A small prayer everytime the system started, didn't like it much. Strangely enough 3.11 was better - the stability was much better. Games were tricky - far easier to slip into good, old DOS.

I had the memory fragmentation and the ini-files licked when Win95 came along. Well, it was better than 3.11 But it is only now with XP that I am starting to forgive Microsoft

There wasnt a single thing I couldnt do better in DOS. I wasnt even using the internet back then, so win3.1 was like a toy like 3dmark to tinker around with sans any substantial use for.
