Wondering which of the more popular internet retailers do the best job of protecting the bare drives for shipping?

Hmm... Newegg was Bubble Wrap in Box w/ peanuts.
Zip zoom was squishy material box in box w/ peanuts.
No experience w/ monarch though.

Overalll, Zipzoom has better packaging.

It came in an ESD box thing, wrapped tightly in bubble wrap (from NewEgg). Good, solid packing job, arrived in a big box with a bunch of stuff I ordered. Packing peanuts flowed like water.

zzf shipped my retail box items in a durable cardboard box packed in peanuts while newegg sent my ram (also retail) in a flimsy envelope type thing with a layer of bubble wrap

Depends on the reseller and vendor. WD drive shipped in an anti-static bag inside bubble wrap surrounded by foam peanuts, but my Seagate shipped in a plastic clamshell in a white box surrounded by foam peanuts. Both were bare OEM drives from Newegg...

mine came wrapped as if was the holy grail itself...
antistatic, covered with sticky naylon, covered with tones of bubble wrap, all that in a hard card-box.
It could have sustain a fall from the top of the sears tower...

but I was really happy with it, that's how you treat stuff like that.

From where?

It's good to see that they aren't just tossed in a box in the antistatic bag. I do recall a post where someone said they had one shipped to them like that.

I guess to be sure you'd have to get a retail drive.

Thanks,
BGC

Most of the OEM drives I get are in a sealed antistatic bag, wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap and then put in a box with the other stuff and a bunch of foam peanuts. A retail drive I ordered from Staples was in its retail packaging inside another box with some of those air bags and one or two other small items I ordered. One of the air bags had gone flat and the drives box could slide around quite freely inside by the time it reached here, but the drive seems fine anyway.

The manufacturers recommend shipping them in an anti-static bag with at least an inch of foam around them to protect them. That is usually how they are shipped to me, and how I send them RMA back to the manufacturer, but as noted above, it varies by reseller.

From ZZF:

1. Anti Static bag with dessicant sealed inside.

2. That was in a form-fitting soft foam carrier - damn near bullet proff. I have saved three of them for possible use.

3. That is a sturdy cardboard box filled air pillowed plastic bags.

Very neat!

Same for me from ZZF, one from newegg was wrapped in a/s bag and about 2 or 3 tight wraps of bubblewrap in a box of peanuts along with 15 fans I bought...the elcheapo 15 for a dollar each ones. I ordered an SATA from Ebay OEM and it was packed just like ZZFs was.

monarch shipped two 36GB raptors to me when they were first released by wrapping them in bubble wrap, tossing them in a fedex medium box and literally half a dozen packing peanuts. The bubble wrap wasnt even that thick, since the box was pretty thin.
Luckily the drives still worked, never ordered a HD from monarch since though.
