I don't want to end up like my dad with software engineering. He is a code monkey for IBM. Typing away endlessly on his laptop, drinking booze or tea, and eating chips

Then you don't want to study computer science. The vast majority end up in software development. There are other areas of work it may prepare you for, such as system analysis, network architecture, or system administration (which is beyond BORING!), but most end up being code jockeys. Which can be very lucrative and enjoyable if you're suited for it, but it can also end up being grunt work for mediocre pay where you don't see the light of day for months at a time.

Sounds like you'd want to go into either electrical or computer engineering. I'd guess that in most schools those programs are a notch or two more difficult that comp sci, so be prepared.

Well I like the idea of working for a government agency. I know I may be just dreaming a little too much, but a job at a government agency as a programmer/whatever doesnt seem that bad

I really want to find someone that does cyber security.

For me, college was simply a means to and end. I wanted validity working in a software development/engineering career so I got a CS degree as fast as I could (2 years) at the cheapest school around me (CSUS) at the time.

I didn't do a single non-CS degree related thing at my school. No parties, no frat crap, no activities, no nothing. Just work and go to school.

In the end it payed off big time.

I guess it pays off if you have zero social desire.

Lol, I was already married at the time and had plenty of "social" activities then, just not college related, which in my opinion is an absolute waste of time.

Huh? You really expect all college attendees to be in the 18-24 age category?

I was 21 at the time.

Well, I don't expect people to be married at 21 and going to college, but that's just me.

Well right now my plan for college is to take all the regular classes (the basics) then some for cs to see if it really is for me.

Do what you are good at. My parents wanted me to become a doctor. I was good in math and science but not so much in chem. I did IT and Business combined and now I'm a developer. Before settling on my job I had lots of internships which ranged from coding to project management, to networking , and I can do either one. Maybe I'll be doing dev work for a few more years and look for something else but for now it's a busy ass work schedule. Getting up 3am, being on call, dealing with people that have no idea how or what your building. But I like it

amsterdam is really nice place to go to. My daughter and I walked around the red light district. I know I am a poor father but had no choice but to take her along because she was by herself in the hotel. I can't leave her alone she was only 13. She also hated the guys walking around the red light district and pointing. We were also approached for xtasy and etc. Police came up to us and commented on my daughters I love NY shirt. Nice country

Some old buildings are on the canal. Really amazing.

Well, I knew of exactly zero married people < 25 in college, and I went to a bigass college. Imma guess that the outlier in that population is you.

I know 2 people who got married before 23. They both said it was a massive mistake.

Finances/time commitment simply don't mesh well at that age.

One real friend that married before 23. Everyone else just knocked up their girl and were forced to marry which then ended quickly.

Can we get back on topic please?

Also, for those forced into marriage, should have used a condom

Right now, my number 1 choice for a college is UNC-Charlotte
Their program for cyber security is by far the best in North Carolina.

Not sure if this is applicable for you, but one thing I wish I did different was getting more research experience early. I didn't even really know about undergraduate research somehow until the summer before my junior semester (a peer asked me what lab I was in and I said "Uh, I didn't know the lecture had a lab component" and he was like "Oh, that's weird, seems like most people are doing research") and I didn't get started until my senior year. Oh yeah, and try to get any grants you can. Maybe I'm just lucky due to certain family financial situations, but I've basically had a free ride through college, making ~$500 a semester to go to class my first couple years and having to pay about the same in the last couple. Throw in a $5000 research fellowship thing from last summer and bam, no financial worries whatsoever.

Still in college btw (fifth year now). As far as the social stuff goes, college for me has been only slightly different from homeschooling, but that obviously isn't the case for most.
