It's too early in the Trump Admin to much blame or credit on them wrt response in Texas. This more a test of the deep state & the things that the Obama Admin has done to put the agency back on track after the disastrous reorganization into the DHS & the focus on the Terrarist! Threat! They insisted upon. They lost a lot of seasoned & talented professionals in the process. I wouldn't blame Brown too much for Katrina, either-

President Bush appointed Michael D. Brown as FEMA's director in January 2003. Brown warned in September 2003 that FEMA's absorption into DHS would make a mockery of FEMA's new motto, "A Nation Prepared", and would "fundamentally sever FEMA from its core functions", "shatter agency morale" and "break longstanding, effective and tested relationships with states and first responder stakeholders". The inevitable result of the reorganization of 2003, warned Brown, would be "an ineffective and uncoordinated response" to a terrorist attack or a natural disaster.

I hope it all works well for Texas.

Hey dumbfuck, when you're done pardoning other senile old racists, maybe you ought to think about selecting someone to head NOAA?

Might be helpful in hurricane season, just a thought.

I don't think it matters much what Trump does or doesn't do with respect to the Hurricane. It will still be blasted in the media as wrong, incorrect, not enough or too late...

Meh.

Between talking about how well things are going he's pimping the David Clarke (nutcase Milwaukee county sheriff) book and talking bout how he's going to visit Missouri (as well as Texas) to sell tax cuts against Clare McCaskill.

I wonder if anyone told him the disaster is ongoing and will be for several days and potentially longer if the storm hooks back out into the gulf.

Yeah, not a good look to be pimping another asshole sheriff's book while Houston 911 isn't responding. But of course he is telling everyone that it's the biggest/worst storm ever. People are saying ...

Well, he paid some attention to it and with a bit of gravity, but (on top of what K1052 mentioned) he's also veering into things like a campaign trail victory and insisting that Mexico pay for his border wall. It's not terrible, but he also can't resist talking about his own plans even when there's a natural disaster in progress.

Now Mexico paying for that wall again and threatening NAFTA. Has anybody mentioned that if NAFTA was terminated unilaterally Texas would be big time fucked economically? The state that is undergoing a mammoth natural disaster at this moment.

Well if you want to talk NAFTA... I've been very critical of trade deal(s) in the past. Trump has a solid point that "free trade" comes with disadvantages, and our current social safety nets are not capable of handling the loss in labor value. Our people suffer as jobs are exported.

However, there are some benefits. If we deploy an economic model that can cope with the disadvantages of lost labor (Basic Income) then we can reap the benefits of a global economy and should work to strengthen those deals. Our people are hurt and looking for protectionism to save them. My estimate is protectionism will only hurt us economically. We need to steer far away from Trumpism and embrace a alternative real solution.

A nuanced solution to the downsides of our existing trade deals is most definitely not on the menu here.

Last I checked, automation has been responsible for 85% of job loss. That trend will likely accelerate.

Putting it off on trade deals is a Trumpian misdirection play, basically a red herring.

I wonder what FEMA's plan of action is to help people in floodwaters? They needed to have one and the foresight to deploy those resources within 3-5 days notice. Lots of stranded people to rescue in Texas this week.

The preparation for this storm was very poor. It was grossly underestimated.

I dunno. I'm not prepared to blame anybody at this point. I think people are just trying to do their jobs as best they can. Stuff like this is really FEMA's core mission & I hope they have the resources to handle it well. If they don't, their capabilities need to be improved.

I can't wait until all the submerged deplorables start begging for handouts because they didn't buy flood insurance. Perhaps a nice government shutdown is in order. Nothing like a month or two long absence of emergency services after a hurricane to make deplorables think twice about voting again in 2018 and 2020.

Make them pay.

Well Trumps budget will slash 300+ million from the FEMA budget so that should help with any future disasters if it passes. Not to mention these.

• Cuts FEMA state and local grant funding by $667 million, including the Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program and Homeland Security Grant Program.
• Eliminates the USDA Water and Wastewater loan and grant program, a reduction of $498 million
• Cuts $250 million by zeroing out National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grants and programs that support coastal and marine management, research and education.
• US Army Corps of Engineers: $1 billion, a 16.3% cut.

I forgot about this:

http://www.businessinsurance.com/ar...voking-federal-flood-risk-management-standard

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order revoking the establishment of a federal flood risk management standard.

The order, signed on Tuesday, revokes an executive order signed by President Barack Obama on Jan. 30, 2015, to establish the standard and a stakeholder input process.

The Obama executive order stated: “It is the policy of the United States to improve the resilience of communities and federal assets against the impacts of flooding. These impacts are anticipated to increase over time due to the effects of climate change and other threats. Losses caused by flooding affect the environment, our economic prosperity and public health and safety, each of which affects our national security.”
