A 5600(X) on AM4 is hardly the "latest and greatest". Also, you keep saying 64Gb of memory, do you mean 8GB?
No I mean 64Gb of memory not sure if it's 8x8 or 4x16.
Then why have you been asking about V2's? When Haswell was suggested you said they were too expensive. Now you're talking about Broadwell?
I've continued to look since posting and have found some V3/V4's that fit my parameters.
AVX2 would be great for that.
Don't really need it since I have a dedicated computer for that. I do 2 at a time, let it run and they usually are done before I even think about it again.

Yeah the 2697A V4 seems like a pretty good deal. Problem is motherboards are harder to find, and generally more. Still, I found this board, a bunch of them available, on Ebay. Not bad. https://www.ebay.com/itm/395091391415
That's why I have been looking at old workstations. Case/MB/925w PS all for 140.00. These workstations usually come with two different PS's you have to confirm you re getting the bigger one if that's what you want.. For 100 or so more you can get a z840. They come with a 1125w PS

By the way, if you guys are really really interested in gaming on a cheap Xeon, I think nothing can beat this in its price range: https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...1285-v4-6m-cache-3-50-ghz/specifications.html

It has the 128MB eDRAM but it's faster than the i7-5775C by 100 MHz with TDP 95W instead of 65W. Should work fine in a Z97 mobo with the appropriate BIOS version. Being a Xeon, the silicon should be wayyy higher quality than i7-5775C's.

But almost all of them are in China: https://www.ebay.com/itm/175757579914

This video just showed up in my feed and I think the OP might be interested in it. It compares a Haswell 1660 v3 to some more modern choices, and also explains some of the quirks that might show up buying used and from Ali Express in particular.

What is your TL;DW take away? I use that very CPU, a 1660v3 in my server currently. Not the fastest compared to the modern CPUs, but it can OC on an X99 board, and it supports ECC RDIMMs, as does my Asus X99. It is nice being able to add 256GB of RAM to a system for cheap.

TL;DW? At least it has chapters. It was mostly focused on gaming, so I doubt it will help you in that regard. It did decent with average FPS, but 1% and 0.1% lows suffered a bit. In the few productivity workloads he ran it got beat by the 5600X by varying amounts. He stated 176W stock power useage, and 355W overclocked. Even with that much of an OC it couldn't touch the 5600X.

I get the whole too long thing to. Rarely do I watch linked videos for more than a minute. I am curious as to what you are working with that uses that much RAM?

How cheap are we talking? That CPU + decent mobo + 256GB RAM would cost how much? What is the max reasonable OC possible, both on CPU and RAM?
The CPUs go for around $30 or less, and a decent motherboard about $100 now. RAM will vary per seller and how you much you order, but I got the 8 Samsung DDR4 RDIMMs for about $300 a little while back. Extra memory seems to help for ZFS cache, among other things of course.

As for overclocking, it seems that the 1660v3 chips vary fairly widely, with some out clocking some 1680v3 chips at times, (maybe 4.5GHz?) and others maxing at around 4GHz. The one I got isn't a great clocker, it would do around 4 or 4.1GHz, but right now I just leave it at stock.

If your work load can take advantage, dual CPU systems are super cheap. HP z840's come with 16 ram slots and 1125w PS. The BIOS is crap so no overclocking but E5-2690 v4's are only about 35USD and support 1.5Tb ram.
