How would I change the refresh rate in games? (Windows 2000)

I set the resolution and color depth to the same settings as I would play the game in. The refresh rate is set to 85Hz seemingly by default for every desktop res/color depth. When it comes time to play Half-Life, the refresh rate drops to 60Hz.. Its hard to play like that.. switching from 85Hz to 60Hz is VERY noticable.

It is indeed a noticable drop in clarity and flutter when you drop from 85 hz to 60 hz which can actaully lead to eye problems. But the only way to change the resolution inside the game would be through any mechanism that it provides. If it doesn't have any DISPLAY settings then you're kinda stuck. Regards

Shouldn't I just be able to edit the .inf or registry? remove the other res and refresh combos untill it gets 'forced' to run at 85 or higher?

Use powerstrip. I have a diamond tnt2 and under halflife it runs only at 60hz as well. But i now use powerstrip and it forces the game to run at my standard 100hz refresh. Plus it's also useful for turning up the brightness, which is a must if you happen to play cstrike on hl.

Yucky: Could you elaborate oh how you managed to do that? How powerstrip 'force' your games into the certain refresh rate?

I've tried to associate power strip and its settings to Half-Life but it still runs at 60Hz..

(If I sound so sure about myself its because the monitor has an OSD which reports the current refresh rate and resolution.)

Just go to the advance setting in Powerstrip and choose monitor. Set the frequency for whatever mode you run your game in to the proper Hz. For instance I set 800x600, the resolution I run UT in, to run at 120Hz. Remember to keep Powerstrip open when you are playing your game.

Sidenote. Anyone having trouble running a registered version of PS under 2K? My registered version runs fine under 98 and NT but I always get the shareware dialog box when I start it under 2k.

Maybe a bit off, anyone know how to have different refresh rates for different resolutions/color depths in W2K? In W98SE, I had to manually set for each combination at the desktop and would stay as such in games. Whereas in W2K, one refresh rate setting for all combinations (the max capable at the highest combination) but works only at the desktop... Games would have it change into its default lower rate.

Powerstrip to me just uses more resources than needed. Something like McAfee Viruscan... slows the system down but vitally important.
