How would you rank order state U's in WI?

Wisconsin doesn't have any 'U's in it. I don't know how you're going to get into college.

No idea, but Madison is amazing. Easily my second favorite school after my alma mater...beautiful, on a lake, great party school.

OP, it really depends on what you're studying. Let me know & I can probably point you to specific people at specific schools.

Are you a retard in real life or do you just play one on the internet?

My son wants to do CompSci/EE. No idea what my daughter wants to study.

There's reciprocity with state schools in MN, so that's a possibility too.

Yeah very dependant on what you are studying.
Milwaukee will have the most programs outside of Madison though, it’s also the only other in the system that has a large number of PhD programs.
And only like 2 or 3 in the system have any engineering programs
That said I'm going to Platteville since it was umm really really cheap.
That and I didn't feel like transferring to Madison.
It tends to rank worse then the others though because of its size and the not giving a !@#$ if the students graduate or not. Though in all seriousness it can’t be total suck otherwise Cray wouldn’t recruit from there. There is a nanotech lab being set up there if you’re in need of post doc stuff in the field though and don’t feel like going to some huge university for it.

But yeah anyways, since a 3.0 in state gpa lets you go to Madison ranks don't really matter.

Oh and who in their right mind would willingly come to WI.

UW-Milwaukee has the best cs/ee program after Madison, but Minnesota's program is better than Milwaukee's. Milwaukee also has the reputation (at least in Madison) as being the best all-around UW (after Madison).

Graduated from Oshkosh in 2007 - was not impressed
Graduated from Milwaukee in 2009 - A lot better, though my program sucked

I really did like Stout and Point but was unable to attend either for my undergrad.

Why is Madison not an option if he's such a good student?

OP never said Madison isn't an option. I assume OP understands Madison is better than any other UW system school for anything, at least if you're considering academics alone and no other factors.

Madison and the University of Minnesota are possibilites. I don't he'll have any problem getting into either.

The problem is he'll be 16 when starts college and I'm wondering if a huge university is the best choice for him. Otherwise, Grove City College in PA is a great school and it's cheap. And probably more friendly to underage students.

We're already in central WI, so we might as well make the best of it.

Platteville >> Milwaukee when it comes to Engineering (EE)

Welcome to Wisconsin!

Madison is a great school.

If you are looking at an engineering degree, then MSOE would be an excellent choice. I toured their campus years ago and spoke with several of the councelors. It seemed like an excellent school, though I didn't attend.

I have also heard good things about Stout, Platteville, and Whitewater depending on which program you are looking into.

Thanks! I came here for a job a year and a half ago and my family joined me 6 mos later. We like it here, but adjusting to the difference in culture from the northeast has been a little difficult.

Certainly there may be better options for a young student, but as a possible employer, the only school that I would recognize on a resume is the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Of course, as long as the final degree says UW-M on it, who cares where he spent the first couple of years?

Yes, a lot of top scientists I know went to nondescript undergraduate institutions but got their PhDs from top flight graduate schools.

I just went to a nondescript undergraduate institution. Thankfully, I got some breaks and it hasn't hurt my career.

I went to the U in Minnesota, got my ME degree there (lotta good that did) and am going to Iowa to get a masters in welding engineering in the fall. I preferred UMD's campus to the twin cities but that's another story. Large schools like Minneapolis and Madison, esp the party schools, probably aren't the best place for a 16 year old even if he is extra nerdy and doesn't go out... too many video games.

Honestly the best thing he could do would be go to local CC and get his associates in whatever field (cs right). Saves you a lot of money and he can figure out which route to take. If nothing else he can get a bunch of general requirements out of the way.
