How would you respond to someone that feels like this about alcohol?

I think it is terrible that there are any beer companies at all Nobody should drink alcohol. It is a toxin, it poisons cells, significantly raises the risk of breast cancer in women, and does lots more bad things. Even if alcohol were healthy, just the fact that it is a mind-altering drug makes it wrong.

Tell him everything is bad for him in large doses and then tell him to stop breathing?

There is no need to respond, it's not a big deal if they think that way (and like spidey said, it is factually true)

Ask them what else they do to get "off" when alone, what a dirty dirty thing to do. Hope they never take prescription drugs cause those might indirectly give a "high".

To each their own unless it affects me like cigarettes. I'm not a smoker, but my neighbour is. He throws his butts on our lawn and smokes every night around 10pm when I'm in the living room with windows open. And it's not even a brand I like...

Er, religion significantly raises the risk of breast cancer in women?

It's really hard to defend alcohol.

Not really. I like alcohol, and am able to enjoy it without being an ass.

all things in moderation.

alcohol
caffeine
sugar
cholesterol
tv
religion
the internet
pop music

alcoholic beverages are good for all sorts of things. wine is delicious (yay) and red wine has healthy goodies. beer is great as a flavoring agent (i admit im more fond of wine than beer, but to each his own), ditto for hard liquor. im not going to hunt down a list of references for possible health benefits.

though, iirc, moderate drinkers show an decreased risk of heart disease or some such.

Ignore them. They were home schooled.

Watch it.

Yeah, come on now. Everyone knows people who are home-schooled are the biggest alcoholics.

im not sure that this is a fact.

but it would definitely make sense

No, factually, it's a biased and ignorantly incomplete statement entirely designed to mislead!

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has completed an extensive review of current scientific knowledge about the health effects of moderate alcohol consumption. It found that the lowest death rate from all causes occurs at the level of one to two drinks per day. That is, moderate drinkers have the greatest longevity.

The NIAAA?s conclusion that moderate drinking is beneficial to heart health will be included in the next revision of the dietary guidelines to be issued by the government.

Drinking alcohol may slightly increase the risk of breast cancer. However, Dr. Lorraine Gunzerath of NIAAA emphasizes that women should weigh the small increase in breast cancer risk (one percentage point) against the sharp decrease in heart disease risk (40%) resulting from moderate drinking. Also important is the fact that about 4% of American women die of breast cancer while about 50% die of heart disease.

The scientific medical research did not find that moderate drinking leads to weight gain or to obesity, although alcohol contains calories.

Moderate drinkers tend to have better health and live longer than those who are either abstainers or heavy drinkers. In addition to having fewer heart attacks and strokes, moderate consumers of alcoholic beverages (beer, wine or distilled spirits or liquor) are generally less likely to suffer hypertension or high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease, Alzheimer's disease and the common cold. Sensible drinking also appears to be beneficial in reducing or preventing diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, bone fractures and osteoporosis, kidney stones, digestive ailments, stress and depression, poor cognition and memory, Parkinson's disease, hepatitis A, pancreatic cancer, macular degeneration (a major cause of blindness), angina pectoris, duodenal ulcer, erectile dysfunction, hearing loss, gallstones, liver disease and poor physical condition in elderly.

I would respond that it's personal choice and that beer is delicious and in moderation, it's healthy.
