How's this future-proof PC?

Hello. I'm upgrading my PC on a colossal scale, as mine is currently from 2005 and it sucks. How is this for the future?

~Things to consider: The reason I chose the i7 920 over the 1166 models is because they are the same price, only the motherboard is a bit cheaper. I can spare some cash for a higher performing 920 over an 860.

Motherboard:

ASUS P6T SE X58 LGA1366 - $255
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=38342&...nufacture=ASUS

Processor:

Intel Core i7 920 LGA1366 2.66GHz - $329
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=34598&...l&promoid=1026

Video GPU:

XFX 489A-ZDFC HD 4890 1GB - $235 [PLACEHOLDER]
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=37...anufacture=XFX

~I'm tentative about this one right now, as in about 2 weeks the price will drop substantially on this.

Memory (RAM):

Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3-1600 ? $137
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...acture=CORSAIR

Power Supply:

Corsair TX750W 750W [Single-rail]: $114
http://www.ncix.com/products/?...orsair&promoid=1026[/L

Case:

Antec Nine Hundred ATX Mid-Tower: $126
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=21123

HDD (Hard Drive):

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM - $100
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=31...D&promoid=1026

DVD Optical Drive:

Samsung 22X Dual-Layer DVD Writer - $33
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...acture=Samsung

Cooling:

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Rev.2 ? $30
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=42...ctic%20Cooling

TOTAL:
$1359

If you're near a Microcenter you can pick up an i7 920 for $200 and be able to make sure you get a D0 stepping. Not too sure about the rest but your PSU link doesn't work. Is it modular? I'd recommend a modular PSU just because of airflow and ease of use. Oh, and you can get a better heatsink than that. If price is a concern then maybe not, but there are plenty of other tower type coolers that will be better, especially if you're overclocking, which I personally would do as well.

It's not "future-proof" at all.
It's simply a list of mediocre components.

Calling it future proof and not even putting in an Intel X-25 G2 SSD, or even a 10K RPM HDD?

What will it be used for? Have you read up on the i5 at all? Seems to be the better deal (in most scenarios) than dishing out the cash for an i7 920 and an x58 board.

I fixed the PSU link. Also, I didn't really consider getting an SSD right now; thought I could add one later.

The only reason I didn't want an i5 was becuase I thought the i7 was better value for the money, and it might last longer (and overclock better, yes?)

The 920 scores slightly higher in most benchmarks, but the i5 offers up very good, almost equal performance (in some benchmarks) at a very attractive price tag. And the cost of LGA 1156 boards is a little lower as well. The i5 lacks hyper-threading, so it obviously lacks the 4 logical CPUs you'd gain from that.

Boils to to this IMHO:
Go with the 920 if you're always (read: ALWAYS) doing some heavy multitasking.
Go with the i5 if you do more casual computing, with the occasional multitasking.

And when I say multitasking, I mean really heavy/CPU intensive multitasking, not just listening to music, watching movies, browsing the web, and checking e-mail.

I'd definitely recommend reading this:

The most expensive isn't always the best option.

Again, this is all just my opinion. Others might feel differently. Bottom line is, it's your money. Spend it how you want. The 920 is still a great chip. It'll be a great system either way.

Alright, thanks for that. I heard the 6-core 1366 were releasing next month, and they would only utilize the LGA1366 setup.

Last question: I5 or i7, which is the best for gaming?

i5 even slightly OCd (OC with turbo) gives best performance/$. Games won't use the hyperthreading of the i7 800 and 900 chips. Even stock with turbo should run games well if not running too many other threads.
