HP 8250i for $109 @ Sams Club that can be hacked to a 9100i

Was at Sam's tonight and saw that they have the HP 8250i (4x4x24) for $109.

you can learn how to hack it to a 9100 (8x4x32) so you would now have a 9100 for $109 not bad but not fabulous either.

Has anyone else actually done this to their 8250? Is there risk of permanently screwing it up, or can you always just go back to the original configuration? Do you actually get 8x/4x/32x performance?

yes you do get 8x4x32 performance from the hack,as stated though ,there is no known way to go back to original settings.but who would want to when you can have a faster burner.go figure........

The site says something about 82xx and then lists the 8250i. Does this hack work on an 8200i (firmware f)? Has anyone tried it?

I would not suggest hacking the 82xxi other than the 8250i because these are later models and probably use the exact same components as the 91xxi.

Hehe I was crazy enough to try to use the firmware update that was on cdmedia's website . . . but it doesn;t work for the 8250i gonna go try to find it like Elfenix . . .

I am still confused and since I do not want to screw up my writer. Can any one of you clarify what I really need to do. I went to the Site that GCS has mentioned.

Do I download the update from there and follow the step or do I need to do some search from the website.

Can any one of u explain step by step what needs to be done. I have an 8250i too.

I tried the firmware update under Windows 2000 but it won't work, I get the error message "The file: 820a_10g.bin is not valid for the selected drive" Maybe it can only be done under Windows 95-98?

I have an 8250, but the manufacter's date does not match and the product number does not match exactly. Mine I believe is #4462. Will the hack still work even though the numbers don't match, but it's still the same burner?

Why bother getting a drive that is rated slower and doing a hack when you can get a 8x4x32 Creative Labs at Amazon for 117.94. This is just a rebadged plextor with 2MB cache.

Here is the scoop:
8100 & 8200 are rebaged Sonys.
8250 is a Philips.
9110 ia Sony as well.
So the hack is not good for 8250.

This is the real scoop.the hack worked for my 8250i hp burner..it nows acts as a hp 9100i..for those that own one this is a good hack.why go buy one that you already own.i go in to my device manager and it now says 9100i..plain and simple..
