Just picked this up at Office Depot. In the store they are marked at $199 but on the net for $159.00 When I bought it in the store it rang up as $159 The sales guy said they must have not remarked them yet. This burner is rated very well. It has 8X4X32 speeds. It comes with CD copy software, CD organization and Storage software, Emergency backup software, and CD label maker and software.

hey zzzz,

that sounds about right. If u get a pm, which u should, then knock $30 off of it, that should come out to $129 + whatever Staples might add on.

Seems like a pretty good deal, and u should be having it arrive at your doorstep the next day too!

btw, isn't this drive compatible w/ CloneCD???

i have this burner and love it, you can't go wrong. prices are pretty low on these nowadays, but the HP's are worth the money, IMO.

HPs never had that great of a reputation with their CDR/Ws but my roommate has this drive and it's not too bad. I would highly recommend getting a Plextor (Not sure if the deal still exists) for a bit more. Yes, I believe HP 9110i supports CloneCD. My CDRW is about a year and a half old and on their list of supported CDR/Ws, mine was not supported. I tried the software anyways and it worked fine.

My HP 9100i pooped out on me after burning about 300 CD-Recordables. Not bad huh? I'm sending it for repairs. Otherwise, my other HP 9100i is performing beautifully. (crossing my fingers!)

thanks,
Sun

It's worth it to spend even an extra hundred bucks for burn proof drives. It's such a pain in the but without it.

"Burn proof" is a marketing term, not a scientific term. There are no truly burn proof drives, just as there are no truly crash proof computers. If you believe in burn proof, you'd have to only buy Zip CD writers, since that company was the first to begin plastering its boxes with the term.

HP CDR drives are consistently rated among the highest... NOt sure which reviews you saw that rated them poorly. I've owned this very drive for about a year and have burned hundreds of CDRs and CDRW's, and I've never had a single problem (though I wouldn't consider it burn proof...)

I definitely wouldn't pay more for a Plextor, not worth the money. This HP drive is a workhorse.

I also have this same drive along with Clonecd and a Toshiba Cdrom. Overall an excellent drive... I also got this pricematched at Staples with a coupon, so at $129 an even better deal...

I'm not saying that HP drives are bad although my first HP drive the 8110i did go bad, I just upgraded from the 9110i to the plextor 12x10x32. With the HP 9110i I would get some coasters especially if I tried to burn a music cd at 8x using spin doctor. With the plextor I burn as 12x and no sign of any coasters due to burn proof.

nippyjun- you are aware that the 8110i is only a 4x burner right? I had that drive and loved it but I decided to upgrade so now I have the 9210i (8x SCSI) and love it more than my old 8110i. HP's are definitely some of the best CD-R's on the market.

I bought the HP 8250i CDRW a while back for $129 at Sam's, it was rated at 4x4x32. I performed a firmware hack to make it 8x4x32!! It burns just fine!!

just make sure if you get the HP9110i that you update the firmware to version 1.0c This will resolve problems with the drive not recognizing recordable media after being on for a few hours. Also it allows it to read/write 80min+ CDR's. The revision is available on HP's Website.

CloneCD is a software program that's popular because it helps you dupe copy-protected discs. The software doesn't work well with all burners, but it works great with this particular one.

MontyBurns......Burnproof is not a marketing tool...it is new technology from Sanyo...if the stream of data is interrupted to cdr, the cdr will wait for the data stream to be restarted..the drive waits and reburns will less than a 40micron gap which prevents a coaster...this avoids the dreaded buffer underrun and a wasted cdr......no it is not perfect but for that matter nothing is....you can multitask and even hit ctrl-alt-del and the burn will continue and will not get a coaster but yes if you turn off your computer you will probably get coaster but burner would prevent this.

Burnproof works period....there is also a new tech called justlink by Ricoh similar to burnproof from sanyo(which has an update and gives a smaller gap) but has smaller gap when the data stream is interrupted....from what I have read if the gap is less than 200 microns the cd will work fine according to I think it is the red book std(or orange book)...these "books" create the std for cd and cdr burning...

I have no idea whether the "new burnproof" is a update or enhanced chip now...I saw this over at cdrinfo.com in a story awhile back...they had a link to site that claims sanyo has decreased the gap from 40-45 microns to 2-5 micron like Ricoh Justlink...I checked sanyo's site but saw nothing...asked at several boards noone seem to know ...
