yup snag a coupon from favorite deal sight and u got urself a nice deal!

For me I'm gonna keep waiting. I'm waiting for those combo drives that do both standards of DVD blanks to come down in price.

I second that

Why wait for a combo drive? They are only transitional drives anyway...Of the two formats (DVD-R and DVD+R), the writing is pretty much on the wall that, going forward, DVD+R is going to win...DVD-R is going to straggle on for a while, with support from manufacturers like Pioneer. But ultimately, it's going to be DVD+R (until, again, the next format arrives). Most of the industry has now thrown their support behind DVD+R. A couple of years ago, there were arguments for DVD-R based on compatibility with existing standalone DVD players. But recent players support both formats. So the only real reason to desire DVD-R now is the somewhat cheaper blanks.

Given the proliferation of DVD+R drives, it is only a matter of time until DVD+R blanks are much cheaper.

So given the choice of a DVD+R drive for $100 now, or waiting probably a year or more for a dual format drive at around the same price, I say: why wait?

It burns CDRs at 12x, which is OK (some DVD writer decks do 16x).

There's a printable in-store $30 off $150 Staples coupon available on other sites. Either add stuff to your order to get it up to $150 (in essence consider it $30 off $45 on top of your HP writer) or if you get lucky, like I did, you can slap it on top of a purchase of two of these DVD writers to bring the cost down to $90/per writer.

The HP DVD200i is a rebadged Ricoh DVD writer, incidentally. There is a recent firmware upgrade for the drive available on the HP website. (version 1.53, I think).

As for the debate over +R/RW vs. -R/RW, the only real advantage to -R/RW at this point is that at the low end, cheaper -R/RW media is available. Compatibility of either format with recent standalone DVD players is excellent. It appears that +R/RW will ultimately be the surviving format, and the majority of recorders now being sold are +R/RW. That means it's only a matter of time before the +R/RW media get as cheap as (and then cheaper than) -R/RW.

Kwad

AND Sony Playstations only read -r media. not +r.

My local Staples was out of the 200i, but did have 1 Memorex 2.4x DVD+R/+RW left for $93.75 on clearance. Got a bunch of stuff for $128 + tax after rebates and $30 off printable coupon: Memorex DVD+R/+RW, PD external 48x USB 2.0 CD-RW, 10 pack DVD+R and Energizer UPS.

What store was that memorex at, the two local stores here had them at 175 and 187.50.

I'm not sure but I think there are 2 different Memorex 2.4x dvd drives packaged in somewhat different boxes. Maybe the older one is the one that is $93 but not many stores have them.

Just a theory.

It's not. Having worked at Staples for a year and a half, once something gets posted here on AT or FW, people call the store or rush up there like crazy looking for it. If we can't sell it to you for full (clearance) price, then there's 10 other people who will buy it at full price. The manager you had was just nice.

Thanks to the OP! I managed to score one for $75!! I bought some blanks to push it over $150 so I could use the $30 off $150 coupon, turns out that I picked up the wrong media. When I returned the blamks the clerk didn't want to hassle with the coupon adjustment so he just refunded the full amount.

BTW Dell and Microsoft are both backing the DVD+ standard now...

The same happened here. You can't beat this deal with a "Free after Rebate" stick if you wanted too.

Where do you get your info? +r really doesn't have any more support than -r (a few months ago it had marginally more support but lately people like Microsoft have decided to back both formats since they are afraid if they back the losing format they will get burned)... Sony backs +r because they own a portion of the rights and get royalties but Sony standards have almost NEVER won out over their competition since they always want such high royalties which again is the case in +r which makes +r media cost more.. So unless Sony goes against their business practices which they have been following for decades +r media will never be cheaper than -r media.. +r is proprietary, -r is an open format..

In my opinion the war of -r vs +r is far from over and it is anything but clear which will win...

That being said, I wish I could get in on this deal

Excellent deal!

I was there with TN in Knoxville getting the drives. The Knoxville store had 1, and Alcoa had 2 (we bought those), and Sevierville HAD 2, but they're gone now.

This really was a great deal.....

So...

Have I got one for you.

I bought the HP 200i drive on the 22nd. There were 2 on the shelves.
Pat myself on the back for seeing the deal so early.

Now, this was a reward because of all the crap that has happened in the
past few weeks.

Wrecked car.
Parents divorced.
Cat ran away.
Two computers ($2k) fried in an electrical storm.
80gb of meticulously ripped MP3s (600 cd collection) died along with it.

...there's more, but I'm making myself sick again.

Anyway, I'm able to cobble together some pieces and parts and get
a system running. I take the HP out pop it in the secondary master
channel to replace my 16x cdrw.

XP Pro boots up and DriveSpeed reports that the Mitsumi drive speeds
have not been set.

"EH?"

I power down and pop the drive out.

...WTF?!?!?!?!

This is a MITSUMI 4X CD-ROM, folks. Someone returned an old drive
in this HP DVD 200I box.

And I bought the damn thing.

And didn't install it for 5 days, much less look at the box before I left
the store to see it had been opened.

Now I have to go back in there and convince them I'm not returning
the drive myself and pull a fast one on them.

Whose dogma ate the n*ts off my karma?

ouch..

I thought I had it bad when I once bought an EMPTY box of a video card. Luckily being the way that I am, I just had to open the box and check out my new card in the car. Thats when I was in total suprise that the box I bought off the shelf contained nothing more than the manuals and software. No card to be found!

I was horrified in thinking how in the hell are they going to believe that I didn't simply go out to the car, take out the card and come up with this cock-eyed story. But it was the truth, and there was no way in hell I was going to be out $200 or so for a damn empty box!(waaaay back when a 4mb pci Matrox Millenium costed $200),

Don't forget to upgrade the firmware to the latest version: v1.51

Release Date: 2003-01-23 Version: 1.51

This firmware update will upgrade DVD200 drives with firmware version 1.06, 1.27 or 1.36 to firmware version 1.51. The upgrade contains all previous firmware revision changes and includes the following features:

New laser write strategy for 4x DVD+R media.
Without firmware 1.51, the DVD200 may experience incompatibilities with 4x DVD+R media. The firmware update addresses this issue by improving the drive's compatibility with 4x DVD+R media.
The firmware update will NOT allow the DVD200 drive to write at 4x speeds. The DVD200 maximum recording is speed 2.4x even on 4x DVD+R media.
Write strategies for high speed CD-RW media improved.
Further error checking refinement for media incompatibility.
Other general errors resolved.

I picked one of these up today, but I already have a DVD-R, I will give it 2 days before I decide to return it or sell it on ebay.

I was able to purchase one of these thru Staples Customer Service. I was trying to find a store in my area but none are located in the KC Metro. The closest store is 2 hours away and did not have any in stock according to the CSR. She was able to find these in a warehouse and allowed me to order one at the clearance price. I should received it via UPS on Monday.

Well, if you're getting rid of it, I'll save you the hassle of returning or dealing with ebay, put me down as first in line to buy it! PM me if you're serious.
