All companies have their faults. I fix computers for family, friends, friends of friends, etc. and the number 1 brand I've seen problems with is Acer. However, I've seen plenty of horror stories with HP, Dell, Toshiba, ASUS, and even a few from the mighty Lenovo.
The fact that HP and Acer are the (#1 and #2?) top notebook manufacturers is a big contributor to the fact that a lot of them end up in repair shops. People tend to buy the cheap low-end models that you'll find for $500 in Best Buy or Staples without doing any research, and then bitch when a plastic hinge breaks or the AC adapter dies within two years.
That's not to say that HP hasn't had some bad products. I've also heard that the DV9000 and DV6000 lines have been plagued with problems, and as a result, I stay away. To call every one of their products bad simply because of that is silly, though. That's like saying all of Ford's vehicles are junk simply because the late 90's Taurus had notorious transmission problems within 150k miles.
