Costco Wholesale has the HP LaserJet 1200 printer for $279. Its actually 329 with a $50 instant rebate at the register. They had 4 printers left at the ALhambra, CA Costco Wholesale.

I bought 2.

I'd call your local costco to see if they have any in stock, before heading out there.

They've been carrying the 1200 laserjet for several months.....but price dropped recently with a $50 rebate.

Great little printer....USB or Parallel.

I picked up 4 of these for my exec's at my company......they had the old hp 1100 series that grabs multiple pages each print. (yes I've done the free HP kit to fix but didn't help.....also, the class action suit is pretty worthless.)

Anyways....I like em....and they'll last. Toner is pretty cheap too....$45 for 2500page, $65 (I think) for 3500 page new HP brand at newegg.com

My $.02

Edit: Oh yeah, they come with 8mb, and can be expanded upto 72mb....I recommend kingston.com to buy memory...cheap, free delievery, and name brand. ($32 for a 64mb module....a tad better priced than the $400+ HP wants for the module).

good printer, i just hate the fact it doesn't have a on and off switch so I have to unplug it everytime I don't use it.

How would more RAM benefit printing? I assume it can then spool bigger documents?

I've had my 1200 since it came out. I LOVE it. A really solid, fast printer.

Plug into a power strip, use the power strip on/off... I have an old lamp with a dificult to reach switch with this method as its on/off... hope this is helpful...

They are designed to remain powered 24/7. They go into a deep sleep when idle. Lots of laser fax's out there that remain powered continuously without ill effects.

Is there a difference between the Laserjet 1200 and the Laserjet 1200SE? I was thinking the models I saw at OfficeMax were 1200SE's and the ones at Costco were just 1200(that's what the boxes said too). What's the difference?

The SE is really the 7200 RPM Printer with the additional 8 MB of RAM...

Seriously, the only difference as far as I am aware is the software that is bundled with the printer. HP has been playing the game for years with their low end printers (5L, 6L, 1100, 1200, etc). They do it so that way you can't price match from one competitor to another because technically it is a different model. (On the box, not on the printer)

I bought one of these when OfficeMax had 'em cheap. Great little printer, not much to them, but they get the job done. Very very straightforward, no frills, but no hassles.

Not having a power switch is quite annoying, I'm going to get my power meter out and see just what deep sleep really means. Note that these have an "instant on" technology so they warm up and are ready to print surprisingly fast. Right now, it's on a power strip.

Get more RAM. Do it. Really. You'll be better off in the long run, especially if you use PostScript. If you wait a few years, the RAM will probably be more expensive than now because it'll be rare/special. I did a search and for me, buy.com had Kingston 64MB RAM for the HP printers (yes, it's special, not generic PC RAM) shipped for just a hair less than $30. That was the cheapest name brand I could find -- the cheapest generic ones were $25, and $5 for name-brand RAM that I can check on their web site and be sure (compatibility guarantee) will work with this model seemed like it was worth it. Amazon has a generic for $25 shipped if you'd rather be cheaper.

Well I don't know because the last two HP products I've gotten have broken down (a Deskjet 670c printer and a CD burner). But I suppose it's only their low end products that are notorious for being low quality then.

If you saw the SE and it was priced at around $600.00 + dollars it basically has a built in scanner and copier.

Laser printer low power mode is between 5w and 15w, usually closer to 5w for newer models.

Note that many laser printers do a power on cycle thing that can waste a bit of toner and produces wear and tear on the mechanism. Doesnt need to do that if you leave it on, plus its available for you 24x7 to print without waiting.

You're looking at a buck or two per month tops in electricity costs. Best to just leave it on.
