The GF finally got sick of her less than reliable macbook and OSX and has decided to jump to Windows. Ive been trying to find something with looks and reliability that would appeal to her and Ive come up with the following:

M1330, dv2700t, Sony CR series, Lenovo Ideapad Yh

Ive always been leary of Sony because of more bad experiences from people I know (in fact just about every single person whose ever owned one) so I'm not to keen on going this route, but they are the nicest looking ones available.

Ive been out of the loop as of recent though and don't know much about the longevity and durability of the new crop of HP laptops, they were crap back in the day, are they still the same or have they improved?

Ill see what you guys have to say before i suggest anything else, thanks!

Please note I'm no particular laptop expert... however I live in a college setting, and am constantly around people with their laptops. They are everywhere. So I feel like I can speak to what people are liking, not liking and/or having problems with.

All the HP owners I know have had to send their laptops back to HP at least once. One of my friends has taken advantage of their policy of complete replacement after 3 or 4 service cycles.... 3 times. I will say that their service tends to be prompt and courteous, but still... who wants to be constantly mailing their laptop out for service??

Yes, the Sony's are the best looking, and I'm a little biased because I myself own a Viao FS-640 from a couple years back.... and.... I've never had to send it in, and it runs like the day I took it out of the box. People will always gang up on SONY for their high pricing... but you pay for what you get in my opinion. I perform regular software-type maintenance on my machine, and I still have people ask me if my computer is new on account of how snappy it still runs. The styling is great.

Ahhhh... DELL. What an awesome company. If it weren't for all the bloatware I'd recommend this hands-down. But, bloatware can be removed with patience, and with the new color options they are offering on their notebooks the styling is improving, too. They offer the best bang-for-your-buck on their lower-end models. For instance, if your girlfriend doesn't require much graphical power.... going with one of the colored inspiron notebooks will save you a couple hundred bucks and will probably feel a little nicer to use. (I make this assumption based on the clunkiness of some of the XPS models that may not be appealing) The thing with Dell is, just because it costs less, doesn't mean that it's worse... you can almost always customize them up to your specifications, and I haven't heard of any weird service-related issues from my dell wielding friends. ---special hint... if you aren't into the color inspirons, click on small business from the dell homepage and check out the vostro notebook... it's even cheaper, and has the same technology as the inspirons, but no bloatware..... only comes in black though...

the IBM/Lenovo jobs are pretty nice too... boxy styling, low profile.... boring colors... blue enter key..... from my experience seem to have some hardware compatibility issues with Windows Vista.... lots of blue screens of death happening around here.... so watch out for that if you're going with Vista.... other than that they are a solid machine. My roommate's parents both work for IBM... good company.

hope that helps..... Attractive as they are... I wouldn't buy a HP........too much hassle for my friends here at school. I will probably buy another SONY when I need one... or if I can't afford it, I'll go with a DELL... no questions asked.

Just did some research on the DELL line for ya.....

the Dell business Vostro can actually come with an NVidia graphics card.... STILL cheaper than the inspirons without it..... woah.

Did I mention how much of a SONY fanboy I am??

Contrary to the above post, I have a HP dv1000t lappie that has performed perfectly for three years now. Not even a BSOD or any lockup running about 42 apps.

I gave my daughter-in-law a new HP lappie two years agho, and it gets used and abused by 4 grandkids ranging from 3 to 13 years oold. Never a problem there either.

I really have never needed tech support. I have had 5 other laptops since 1995, and they included WinBooks and a Gateway. Some of the earlier ones had battery problems (back in the NiMH days.) The Gateway is still going strong - gave it to another son. I currently have the dv1000t and a Lenovo T60. I find the Lenovo the best of the lot to date primarily because the keyboard is superior.

I have always avoided Sony everything except TVs because they tend to be overly proprietary. Dell is OK - but they have had some QC bumps in the road over the past 2 years. Michael Dell returned to duty and things are again looking up for them.

"Looks" has never been a factor for me. Function trumps appearance.

My daughter's cheapie HP laptop (Nov. 2006 black friday special) has spent a semester in England and one in South America, on top of constant college use inbetween and has performed perfectly without a hiccup.

When I was studying software engineering, we had 10 students with laptops out of the 12 in my year. 1 Sony (that then switched to Apple), myself (Apple), 2 Toshibas, an HP, an alienware, and 4 Dells.

The Sony was sold because it was too big, too slow, the swapbay (where you could remove the optical drive and drop in another battery) basically refused to work and never ejected the optical drive, and was a real pain to work on if the need ever arose

The Alienware was in pretty good shape, but one of the 2 graphics cards in the machine stopped working after 3 months and Alienware took another 2 just to issue a new part.

The power adapter on one of the Toshibas broke, followed by 3 keys and a hinge issue. The other Toshiba was more or less ok for the majority of the time.

3 of the Dells were Latitudes, D800s I believe. 1 of those three was constantly plagued by hinge issues, as well as the wireless cutting out on occasion, it would actually turn off, not just lose signal. The other 2 were fine.

The last dell was an Inspiron that quite quickly started to look and act as though it were 3 years old instead of the 6 months that it was. Fading paint, obvious wear marks, bum hinge, and a flaky trackpad.

My MacBook has been beaten to death, and only now has a few cracks in the plastic after 1.5 years.

My friend's MacBook has a dent in the corner from where it dropped (his backpack broke), but otherwise is working fine last I heard

There were no issues that I had heard about concerning the HP.

I had an alienware that practically fell apart after 2 years of use.

I also acquired a used PowerBook that lasted for 3 years before the DC-In board went bad, after fixing that though, it has been running like a champ.

My sister had an iBook that lasted 4 years or so before the logic board finally bit it (known issue, out of warranty otherwise it would probably still be working)

My buddy's MacBook Pro has had every conceivable issue known to man. The backlight inverter went out, his MagSafe frayed, it runs very, very hot, his optical drive got bricked by an update, and he has numerous dents. Almost all his issues would have been covered by warranty had he actually called. Instead he just dealt with them, thinking that he only had 6 months of warranty.

My other sister had an older Sony that lasted for years and years, she finally replaced it with a macbook because it was too slow and the screen too small (one of those older Sony ultraportables). Also, she has a predilection toward carpal tunnel and preferred the MacBook keyboard.

Another friend of mine goes to a school where laptops are required, and part of the tuition, his Compaq has been replaced 4 times now for a variety of problems.

Finally, my other friend has a Dell Inspiron with a bum DC connector.

The basic end to this is that you can go off of general consensus, that say.... HP has an 80% survivability rating or something, but at the end of the day, it can be luck of the draw. Your girlfriend has had a horrible time with her MacBook, mine has been perfect. Same goes for my friend, his has been running great since day 1.

I personally like the styling of the HPs, and the prices are pretty reasonable for what you get. And from my personal experience, they hold up pretty well.

Again, it's all about perspective I suppose. We'll all have different stories.... you get to choose who to believe. Do you have any close friends that use the brands you're considering??

It seems the last couple posters tore my thread to pieces.... but again, I'm only speaking from my corner of the globe. Best of luck!

My HP's laptop DVD+/-RW drive seems to be acting up. My friend's HP laptop's dvd drive doesn't work right either.

HP/Compaq has some problems when it comes to Customer Care or Tech Support for repairs I don't have any problem with my HP/Compaq notebook I am not worry about it because I have 5 years warranty from the store I can take it back to store for replacement than to HP/Compaq. I bought it because I like their design work and HP did a great job bring Compaq back to the top. (HP bought Compaq long time ago).
Busia12 is right about Bloatware on some notebooks HP is one of them I have time and patience to remove all of bloatwares off now my notebook is snappy. Only had one Vista BSOD since 5 months I bought it (I should blame on Logitech for poor installation software).
I am not going to tell you to buy HP but you can buy what is best for your money.

My brother's HP has performed perfectly fine for the last 6 months, no problems at all except when I tried to OC it ^^;;. From what I've seen, Sony laptops are very dependable but considering the price I wouldn't really go in that direction, in some cases I can find a Lenovo or HP or Compaq that has the same specs but for almost half the price, Sony rides too much on their brand name imo.

Thanks for the responses, normally I would just get a Thinkpad T series (what I have) but she thinks they are ugly so there is not much I can do there. She likes to keep her computers for a long time but she hasnt been able to (she had a 12' powerbook that was replaced with another 12' powerbook after 3 HD failures, then the 12' replacement was replaced with a macbook after the logic board and HD died at the same time. Now that the macbook is fritzing, she wanted something stylish yet durable and reliable. Ive been leaning to the Ideapad just because of the lenovo name, but she likes the HP and M1330 design better.

The only real experience with HP ive had was my roomates compaq v2000 which has needed a hinge replacement, backlight, and mobo all within 2 years and my neighbors whose needed a HD and dvdrw drive.

Maybe I can convince her to get a vostro, ive heard nothing but good things about them and they look relatively slick.

I have had an Hp laptop for about, shoot maybe three to five years now. I have never had any major problems with it, and I still love the thing.

I have had my Compaq V2000(same as Dv1000 hp) for 3 years. Gets used everyday for business, lives in my Targus backpack. I even carry in the saddlebag of my motorcycle on days when I ride for work. Never a hiccup, have only had to replace battery last month. I have almost worn the touchpad out, but no other problems so far. It owes me nothing.

i've had an hp dv2000 for ~15 months now. sent it in 3 times for the same problem. initial problem was fixed but the replacement dvdrw has issues. with even the slightest force to the right side of the laptop (top or bottom of the laptop) it opens the slot for the dvd. i haven't tested to see if the drive even works (i don't use disks very often) but i've pretty much said screw it cause i need my laptop for school.

problems started at 9 months (my computer stopped turning on when pushing the power button...it would turn on once every 2-3 days). battery degrades very quickly, too. i've been sent 2 replacements. i don't think my battery lasts even an hour right now and i've had the battery like 4 months. oh, and i had to fight for my money back cause HP "didn't receive my battery" after 2 months. i had to show them my fedex receipt showing i shipped it 2 days after receiving the replacement.

i'm going with dell xps or latitude next time. they look *****, imo, and from my friends' and roommate's experience, they have no problems except degrading battery life.

edit: lol AT censored me i think. i wrote "good" i think (***** = great maybe?). wonder why it did that.

HP dv series (own a 6500t and my bro owns a 9500t) gives the most features, but they're fragile pieces of s***. Don't get one without the 4 year warranty. Stick to Dell XPS or Latitude systems.
