Morning all! I have been looking at laptops for the real estate office I work at now for the agents. One we can get for a decent price is the HP 2000-2d68NR model. It has the i3 3110M 2.4 gh chip installed with 4GB or ram and 500 GB HHD. For $429 out the door is this a worthwhile buy or one to skip? Thanks

Here is a good way to describe HP. If you needed to run an extension cord down a hallway, almost every manufacturer would just run the cable straight down the hallway. Job done. HP would run 5 different extension cords, run them into every room possible doubling back on themselves a few times just to go down a hallway. The logic used in ther designs completely baffles me. Working on their stuff is like having to take the engine out of your car to change a wiper blade.

What do you think about HP for higher-end laptops like the new HP Spectre 13T-3000?

Those are fine, but that's because they use higher-end components. The problem with low-end HP laptops that I have witnessed first-hand is that they use very cheap capacitors and bad cooling systems so motherboards end up having to be replaced because of it.

Wowza, all these HP H8ers........

HP has the least-reliable laptops of any of the major brands, especially when it comes to budget laptops. They make some good products, but their low-end laptops are definitely not.

LOL, they are all garbage, we all have different experience with them.

Just buy the high end model from whatever company you like, the cheap one are cheap for a reason.

The nicest thing I can say about it is that it functioned most of the time. It was big, heavy, slow, ran SUPER hot (like 90C), and felt flimsy to that point where holding it felt like a risk.

At my dad's company there are laptop users who have it docked to their desk 99% of the time with a keyboard/mouse attached and monitor. Some loose connection of the Ethernet cable can cause error 678. https://www.corenetworkz.com/2011/05/getting-error-678-while-connecting-to.html We probably could have saved some money and went with something less durable but thinkpads have treated us well. Because of the faulty designs we may get various error messages like destination host unreachable, net unreachable etc. https://www.corenetworkz.com/2009/05/destination-host-unreachable-reason-and.html Granted, a lot of those were due more to the AMD Griffin chip in there than HP specifically, but it never felt like a "well-built" machine, even when compared to the cheap Dells, Asuses, and Toshibas that my colleagues had.

My first choices for laptop are Dell and Toshiba. You may check Toshiba Satellite series and also ask your local friends having laptops about their experience before jump in to any conclusion.

no on HP, definitely no on the pavilions, spend the exta on an elitebook or probook, I believe they have 3 year warranty built into the price. I assume agents move their laptops around a lot so definitely a thinkpad, tecra, latitude or elitebook/probook.

I had a cheap HP Pavillion for five years until just recently. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it functioned most of the time. I'd go with either a Dell or Asus at the low end. They're not wonderful machines, but they won't feel like they're falling apart when you hold them.

Alas, since this is a business setting, maintaining a "professional" appearance with your computers is quite necessary, so cosmetic condition is quite important. But, if you look at some off lease or refurbished computers, you might get some solid ones in your price range that are perfectly functional and in good cosmetic condition.

Newegg has some returns on Latitudes right now.

They will be plugged in most of the time, right?

And yeah, I've never owned one, but HP's budget offerings does give me pause due to complaints of poor cooling.

http://arrowdirect.com/search?q=#/?...P&filter.cosmetic_grade_current=A Grade w/ OS

You up probably can make do with the many Thinkpad T61 laptops they have. This list does not include "B" grade computers or lower, although I think a "B" grade computer should still look fine for an office environment. Also, the Thinkpad keyboards are indeed awesome. A Latitude is also fairly good. These old lappys were premium products back in the day, and hence have great build quality and parts like the keyboard.

Don't take our word for it - HP's consumer line has been at the BOTTOM of the Consumer Reports magazine's ratings for ~10 years and counting.

ASUS and Apple are always in the top 3.

HP's consumer line is garbage, and I've worked on enough to agree with the ratings.

I just noticed the talk about being "professional"... these folks are like the school fashionistas... you show up to a business meeting with a garbage consumer-line laptop meant for kids, there will be silent looks of mockery and amusement.
Fortunately the HP business line IS better built. I'd rather show up to a professional meeting with an HP, Dell Latitude, or Thinkpad prof. model than a better-class, better-build ASUS.

Sales jobs like real estate agents are jobs where the salesman cannot afford to look average to prospective buyers(mostly more average people) due humans being picky about appearances. It is not only the corporates who are fashionistas. Although, I don't think ASUS laptops are striking enough to deter buyers should they walk into an office with one. So long as it isn't some gaming laptop, any laptop that doesn't look poorly maintained should do.

you'd be surprised with the presence of some agents. most are great to work with and many have actually moved to using ipads when presenting to customers due to the ability to digitally send and sign contracts on them. that being said, several in the office have moved to the g series lenovo due to neutral color and i3 or i5 cpus. seems fast enough to pull mls photos and information up quick as well

I'm of the opinion that tablets make any holder of them look good, and in any setting. They're chameleons.

I tend not to trust consumer laptops, and would rather recommend folks to get old business ones because of the build quality; they can take abuse better and protect against "whoops!" moments like spilling a drink on the keyboard. Superior usability is also a plus, as some also have better keyboards and touchpads.

Of course, any laptop an IPS screen and high screen res would be a major plus in your line of work, arguably a necessity due to the picture-intensive job selling houses require(the IPad certainly has that down).
