I just picked up my LA Times Sunday "Preview" and located the OD circular inside. The ad reads:

HP Laserjet 1000 Printer
$98.74 After Price Reduction. Orig $198.74. Save $100.

UPDATE: Search ChubbyWallet for "Office Depot" -- you'll see there's some 10% off $50 min purchase, possibly $20 off $100 coupons floating around. Brings the price down to $78.74 + tax. Sweet.

Doesn't mention anything about MIR or coupons. Good deal for someone in the market for a low-cost Laser.

That sounds like a great deal. I was going to pick up one of the Samsung ML-1710 laser printers tomorrow, but now I might have to reconsider. Same price, but you don't have to deal with the rebate hassle. Anyone have this printer and can comment on it?

J&R is offering the speedy and good-looking (and horizontal-feed) Samsung 1710 for $80 after a $70MIR, FYI. I think the sale and rebate end today, though.

I purchased this printer for 2 months. Although it was in preparation for grad school, I haven't used quite extensively yet until the last few days.

The printer is pretty decent for its price, I purchased it from OD for $150-30(online coupon).

Pros:
- crisp text
- fairly fast output (seriously, i wouldn't know the different printing at 17ppm vs. 12 ppm or something like that)
- seems sturdy

Cons:
- a lil noisy when starts up
- the plastic cover doesn't do much
- USB only (but who uses parallel all that much anymore?)

On top of that, HP has built some very nice printers in the past (except for the deskjet 5550) and it seems that this follow the same path.

I'd recommend it in a heartbeat...

Adding to the pros and cons:

Pro:
- has an alternative paper out path for cards and envelopes (i think samsung and minoltas don't have)

Con:
- doesn't have a manual paper infeed (every time you print an envelope, you have to take all paper from the tray)

As per small memory, I think this printer is of a lower class than 1100 was in: hence its name 1000, less features.

I bought one of these in January for $250- $40(coupon)= $210+tax and thought it was a good deal. Funny now...

I might be not right about some of these. Correct me if Im wrong

you are correct with the Con... but I don't think there is an alternative paper output path...

then again, I haven't used it to print on envelopes yet.

there is a cardboard path in the back (you just have to open it). It's not easily noticeable: 2 salesmen at OM told me that it didn't have an alternative path

if you are a student, then these specs will really not matter. You will never be crunching for time in which that extra 7ppm wil matter. Since it's a B&W laser printer, you will never really send big big jobs to be printed (color images and such). You will also never reach the duty cycle of 7000 pages a month nor the 15000 pages a month for the samsung.

I'd go with HP, they make some of the best printers out there especially their lasers.

it might have been editor's choice... probably because of the value you are getting from it. They were around $130 earlier this year, pretty good print quality, nice overall.

However, my work bought 7 of those, originally we had problems with drivers for win2k, then that was fixed. Then paper jams started to happen on a few of them. 2 died after 4 months (roller didn't pull up the pages anymore). Last but not least, it's a very costly printer to maintain, the ink is horridly expensive for the size... it seems that we were replacing the cartridges every week or so at a VERY fast rate.

Also look at cost per page to print and see which one works for you. If I remember correctly, HP's ink toners were the most expensive, but I'm not sure how long they last.

The replacement toner cartridges for both of them are expensive ($80?). Still cheaper /page than ink jets by a good margin. Plus, you can always refill the toner with a little effort (heard it wasn't too hard with the Samsung). Also, don't know about the HP but the Samsung, like many other printers, comes with a 'starter' drum with a smaller amount of toner than you'd normally get. Obviously they want to sell you more cartridges considering the toner is cheap comparted to the rest of the cartridge hardware.

Man I'm annoyed, I just bought this at Staples for $150 last week. Does anyone know if Staples does retroactive price-matching?

How quickly we forget about their 5L fiasco. HP make good high-end printer, yes. But they have been slacking off on their lower end models.

Well after looking at them both in store today I decided to go with the Samsung. Basically the same price after the rebate, but it seems to be better made. The stats are a little better (duty cycle, memory, processor speed). A primary concern was the size. I thought the HP was much larger than the Samsung, and I don't have much room for it.

If you still wan the HP and your OD is out, you can always PM to OfficeMax. The OMax near me has the 1000 for $149 on sale (web site shows $199), so after the 115% PM you can get it for around $92 plus tax minus any in-store coupons you might have. Save even more if your OMax has it for $199.

Yup. AFAIC HP has been soaking the consumer market for lasers and inkjets using their good name and previously earned reputation for quality. Samsung is the new SoHo laser champ. (Epson & Canon for inkjets.) If you want to pay for the HP name then go right ahead. Notice the difference in duty cycles. Plus HP consumables are some of the most expensive. Their strategy is very simple. They want to sell ink and toner like Gilette sells razor blades. Good for them, take a look at their financials, bad for you. Have you seen those $35 Apollo printers? They're junk but even junk needs new ink. HP makes those. They just didn't want to put their name in big letters on the box. Same business strategy different name.

Sure they do. You got 14 days to pm

dean_jen, you have to choose instore pickup. Once you do this the price will change to $98.74 and the coupon will be accepted too.

When you add it to your basket, you must choose "instore pickup".....that will drop the price down to $98. Using one of the readily available coupons drops it to $78....$85 after tax with no rebate hassles.
