HP Laserjet 1020 Vista Compatibility Problems

My father purchased a HP Laserjet 1020 a little under a year ago. I built him a computer a month ago and figured it would be wise to go with VISTA Home Premium 64bit being that XP is old technology and why buy old stuff. I got him a E6600 processor as well so I figured he'd have this computer for at least 5 years and not get too far behind the times. He kept the last computer I built him for that long so that was my goal.

Anyway, The printer will not install properly, HP says it's microsofts problem, and microsoft says it's HP's problem. Not only can I not install the printer, but it now shows up in my add/remove programs list and if I attempt to uninstall it via "remove software" it will not remove. First VISTA asks me for permission, then an HP window opens up asking me if I want to uninstall and to continue or cancel, if I continue it takes me to another HP window at which point it says HP drivers continue or cancel and once I click continue again it thinks for a bit and then brings up the message "Setup encountered an abnormal program execution. Setup will shutdown" The entire HP group of files is in my program files and nothing I have tried everything aside from deleting everything individually (which wouldn't get rid of the stuff in the registry anyway to my knowledge) to uninstall this software.

I have also attempted the help section on these pages....
http://forums.microsoft.com/Te...ostID=710627&SiteID=17
....but have not solved the problem.

I have attempted to install the drivers both from HP (there is no 64bit version apparently) and from off the disk. I have attempted trying it with the printer plugged in via USB and I have attempted to do it without the printer plugged in. I have attempted to go to control panel when the printer is plugged in but the HP is not listed as being there. I have tried downloading and installing old xp drivers.

So I have no idea what to do for my father. Not only does this laserjet not work but his copy of mcafee does not work either. It's very frustrating for someone who actually goes out and buys their software rather than pirating it. My dad is pretty upset and I wish there was something I could do to help him out. I'm hoping this thread will bring some answers forward I have not found online...that is, if there are any.

I've also had problems with an HP 1020, but on XP. I was running it through a powered USB hub and it just would work. Plugging it in directly seems to have it working. I personally think that the drivers that HP put out for this printer are junk.

Sorry to not offer a solution, but sometimes it helps a little to know that you are not alone. (OK, very little. )

64 bit is still enthusiasts-level stuff, so I think it was a mistake to give someone non-technical a 64 bit OS. It's likely McAfee doesn't have a 64 bit version (after all there's almost no target market for it...) and thus isn't working. Can you confirm that on McAfee?

re: printer - unplug the printer, go into c:\windows\inf, move all oem*.* files to c:\windows\inf\test (directory), then plug the printer back in and tell us what happens.
