There is new information regarding certain HP Laserjet products under a class-action lawsuit against HP.

You can view the details here.

Go direct to the settlement info (PDF document) here.

Be aware that claim forms will not be available until after 9-3-02. Bookmark the site though so you can get in on this settlement. The lawsuit covers owners of HP LJ 5L, 6L, 1100 series, 3100, 3150.

Good luck

Thanks for the heads up. Will definitely be bookmarking this since we have an HP Laserjet 1100 that has been eating paper/jamming itself for over a year now.

Another proof that almost always the only people winning in this kind of class-action suits are lawers. You get at most $70 towards the purchase of a printer (more likely $20-$30), your claim form must be notarized (so subtract $10-$20 or so), and a few other hoops to jump through. HP has made the repair kit available for free for quite some time now, and you don't need any proofs of anything.

Notarization is free at most local banks...maybe the post office too, and some libraries. I'm sort of sure that it's illegal to charge for notarization.

Most states have statutes against gouging for Notary services. In fact, in Arkansas the state sets the fee. Its about $5 or less.

What does this mean to those affected:

The Court has adjourned the date of the Settlement Hearing until
September 3, 2002. Claim forms will not be available until further
order from the Court if the settlement is approved after the hearing.

Seems to me this hot deal might not so hot.

Thanks. I have an HP 9100A that has the problems and qualifies. Maybe I can get rid of the muliple feeds.

I think I'll call HP about the repair kit. I'd give up the $20 if they'd send me that, right away.

I suffered with a 3100 multifeeding for months. When HP finally came out with the repair kit, I ordered it, applied it, and it's been absolutely flawless since. If you haven't ordered the kit, do it.

Yup, I forgot to mention, I ordered the free HP repair kit for my LJ 1100 about 6-8 months ago and the printer has been flawless ever since. No paper jams, no multiple feeds. There's a few threads floating around here about the free repair kit. Search for "HP."

Several things:

As other have posted, getting documents noterized(sp??) cost very little ($2 at the local "Mailboxes Etc..)

You get $70 ONLY if you paid for (and have receipt) a repair.

For those who still have a sales receipt, its $20 + repair kit.

Now... after reading the PDF file.... you have to "swear" that your printer have this problem. I've ordered the repair kit and the problem doesn't exist anymore. Do I still have the problem? Do I still qualify for the rebate? HP *KNOWS* that I ordered 2 repair kits.. (they have my name/address!)...

Still, the rebate is for a "qualifying HP product". You may be doing all the work for a $20 coupon on something totally not worth it.. (Like $20 off HP laserjet printers...but only from authorized retailers (which cost a lot more...))

agreed. In NJ it's $0.50 by law. I know, I'm a notary and I don't charge anything. Apart from banks, some apartment rental offices offer services for residents and check your local County offices for locations near you. They do it for free.

Guess who will make the most $$ on this?

The dreaded Young America nonpayment center will be "handling" the "payments".

Yeah, the lawyers make 1/2 the money.

I got the shaft on a GM W-body class-action suit where the brakes seized and wouldn't work. I was told that I'd get up to 80% of the cost if I had the receipts so I went out and FINALLY replaced the frozen rear calipers, rotors, and pads and instead of 85% I got 15%.

They ended up giving 45% to the lawyers and 55% to the thousands of us that signed up and then they sent us an "oops, we didn't think so many people would respond".

My advice: Wait for the class action suit to go through (i.e. HP admits guilt) then hit them with another suit or try to get your parts free from HP directly and just quote the results of the class action suit because if you go along with the suit and get squat (most likely) then you also forfeit any opportunity to pursue HP directly. That's the expensive lesson that I got from the GM suit.

You can't "wait" for the suit to go through. You are presumed to be a member of the class unless you send in the from stating you wish to be excluded.

My advice: dont take advice from people that play lawyers on the net. As another poster stated - if you want to be excluded from the class-action group you must notify them in writing, by certified mail, by Aug 22. More to the point - HP clearly does not admit guilt as part of the settlement for that very reason. This is true of all class-action settlements I've ever seen.

Quoting from the 2nd paragraph of the pdf:
"HP denies any wrongdoing and will vigorously defend against the Action if the nationwide
Settlement is not approved. HP has agreed, nevertheless, to settle the Action to avoid the costs,
risks, and uncertainty inherent in any litigation."

The settlement cannot be used as admission (or proof) of guilt.

I received a letter from HP yesterday. It's a noitice of proposed class settlement.

There's basically 3 classes of settlement:

A) $70 rebate certificate towards the purchase of a HP "Qualifying product"

B) 5L printers get $30. 6L, 3100, 3150, 1100 printers get $20

C) Repair kit
