Is anyone familiar with this product? I need to get my wife a new computer and she is VERY cost/frugal. We can get the HP for $400.
It comes with a Pegatron IPISB-CU with Intel H61. It has 4mb of memory and will take 8mb. It also has a 750gb drive, no details. I am sure HP has partitioned this for a backup D:. It comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
It says it will take the following. Could slip one in if she left town.

Core i7-2600 (Sandy Bridge) quad core 95w
Core i7-2600s (Sandy Bridge) quad core 65w
Core i5-2500 (Sandy Bridge) quad core 95w
Core i5-2500s (Sandy Bridge) quad core 65w
Core i5-2500t (Sandy Bridge) quad core 45w
etc.

What does she use the PC for? Just basic tasks like internet and word processing? If so, an i5 is waaaaay above those needs. Could do fine with a Celeron G530.

Gigabytes.

$400 is with a Pentium. Why not just order a Dell with an i3 for that price?
Or if you really want an i5/i7, get an outlet xps 8300 with the Dell promo gift card deal (free $50 gift card for each $300+ gift card).
I see one with i5 for $460 and one with i7 & blu ray for $540.

Yes, Internet and Docs. A lot of pictures I will try and recover. My real question is if that machine as is will do a good job for her. Her big complaint was it too 5 minutes to boot the 2mb, 125gb, Vista machine. I spent hours cleaning and trying to get an improvement.

Your response slipped in before previous reply. Time is critical and the machine is available at Office Depot down the street.
The question is WILL THIS BE ENOUGH FOR HER?

It's 2gb. 2mb would be 20years ago. 2gb on Vista shouldn't be too bad.
What specs? CPU, hard drive, vista (service pack?). What did you do to clean it? Did you remove unnecessary startup services/programs?
May need to defragment or perhaps it has virus? What antivirus do you use?

If it's still slow after disabling extraneous services, running antivirus and defragmenting, maybe an ssd with a fresh install is the way to go. You could even use your current Vista key and keep the current hard drive for storage.

It's not going to be anywhere near that long, and I wouldn't expect much difference in bootup time between a Celeron or Pentium and an i5. There are so many other factors, e.g. HDD speed, and Win 7 boots faster than Vista.

Would be fine with anything from a Celeron G530 to an i3-2100. If it saves you cash, definitely consider the G530

Vista is actually more memory hungry than Win 7, and 2GB is a bit subpar even for Win 7.

Depending on what she uses the computer for, you may not need anything better than the Pentium. I recently upgraded my wife's machine around a Celeron G530, which is very similar in perf to the G620, and she's perfectly happy.

Also, the RAM upgrade might be kinda expensive...I'm going to assume the long tradition of both banks being filled, so you have to toss the original sticks to upgrade.

But otherwise, this looks like a pretty decent machine for the price, especially the size of the drive. I don't think Dell has anything right now that can beat it.

If you are getting a new computer, might as well get a refurb xps 8300. As I posted earlier, it's barely any more than that Pentium HP.
http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnline...x?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&brandid=2202&fid=3628
You can use up to 3 forms of payment so the $50 promo for $300+ gift card, which you can purchase at http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/gift_card?c=us&l=en&cs=19, would lower the cost $50 more. You should receive the $50 promo gift card within minutes of ordering a $300+ gc.

The outlet stock is always changing as evidenced by the 2 systems I mentioned being gone. However, there's a i5, 6gb, 1tb, radeon 6450 system for $470 (so $420 with the promo gift card) right now.

If you want to be really frugal, get one of the 620s with either a pentium or i3 for <$400 on outlet. The $300 & bonus $50 cards would just about pay for one. Either way, most cost-effective systems are in Dell outlet, which are updated 40min after the hour. But I think an extra $100 for an xps 8300 with i5, larger hd and dedicated gpu is definitely worth it. Not only is the quality much better but the cost is actually below cost of all the components.

Thank you all for the information. She saw the message that it should be a good machine, so we will start the negotiations tomorrow. I am trying to get them to download her files for free. I have an Asus P6X58D-e and I suppose I could get the SATA drive, if it is what HP said was in the machine, to run.

I guess some people will haggle over anything...

H61 is the type of chipset. It's the lowest-end Sandy Bridge compatible one, but it is perfectly sufficient for your wife's needs.

Thanks to all for the information.
Point of clarity. My wife is from a country where negotiating is a way of life.
Have a great Holiday season.
