I've worked with old Compaq desktops and have long ago decided to avoid them like the plague.... but it looks so good.

Is the 9200 DX9 compatible? If so, it might be a good stop gap to a 9600.

It's DX8. But at that price point, with the features, 4 hour battery life, and a 7400+ 3dmark I'd say it's a good stop gap, especially if you need something now.

The 7500 on my current laptop (VPR Matrix 180B5) plays those games fine so I am guessing a 9200 will handle them quite well.

I placed the order for my X1000 on Tuesdsay so hopefully I will have it by the end of next week. I'll report here with a full review.

? I thought all the new (9200/9600/9800) ATi chips were DX9 compatible.

From what I read it's DX8. Basically a 9000 64 mb with 8x AGP.

Maybe I should order it and try it out. If it doesn't do what I want it to do then I can always return it.

I've read in several places that the 9200 is a souped up (AGP 8, more memory, higher clock) DirectX 8 version of the 9000.

will WUXGA be too small to read (I have a 19" samsung 950nf for desktop usage, and I use 1200 X 1028)? which resolution of screen should I pick for x1000

Your 19" display is currently running with a resolution of 89 dpi. The WXGA option would be 92dpi, WSXGA+ would be 129dpi and WUXGA would be 147dpi. Generally you will be sitting closer to your laptop screen than you will be to your desktop's so its fine to have a higher resolution on the laptop. Also a higher resolution may make things look small at first, but you will adjust. If possible, I suggest upping the resolution of your monitor to 1600x1200 (111dpi) and leave it like that for a day or two just to see if that resolution is usable.
