not bad... impressive thinness and weight. boo on the price. probably gonna pass on this one and see what else compaq/hp releases in terms of pentium-m. they are supposedly working on xp-m based models too, so that should be interesting.

Display and graphic card is prolly the only plus....
as far as combo drive... thats as fast as it goes for slim type.
Hard disk is weak...how about a 7200rpm hitachi?

wait a sec...is this a wide screen?
I really dig those more though.

Yes, this is a 15.4" wide screen.

Also, I don't think you can find a 7200rpm Hitachi in any shipping notebook yet. Probably soon, but a little too early to start complaining about lack of it.

Don't most vendors now offer 24/10/24 cd-rw drives?

Any more info or comments on this laptop? Very tempting. I can max it out and get it for around $1700 AR.

I just picked up the July Laptop Magazine and it has a glowing review of this laptop. It won the best buy in their big screen laptop roundup. The only negative they could find was the one year warranty. Also, the review states that the optical drive is 24x10x24. It reads Dvd-Roms at 8x.

It scored a 7429 on 3dmark01 and had a battery life of 4:48.

I will be placing my order within the week.

I am seriously considering one of these, the only turnoff is based on how much I used to hate all things compaq!
I put one together for about $1270 after 5% student discount, current 10% off, and $100MIR.

Just a note, I emailed Compaq about the combo drive and they replied that it is 8x4x8. So we have a magazine that reviewed it saying it was 24x10x24 and Compaq saying it is 8x4x8. I wish someone would order one so we can figure out what is what. As soon as a guy off Ebay pays me for my current laptop I will be placing my order. Even with the slow combo drive I don't think I could find a similar alternative with the features and price of the x1000.

Their web site says 8 business days to ship. I also have no patience, so it will be a LONG wait.

The Compaq business equivalent model, the nx7000 seems to come with a 24x10x24 combo drive.

Laptop magazine ran 3dmark01 on the x1000 w/ 9200 and it scored a 7429 w/ no tweaking. Not bad.
