Update it and disable the logging features. It's written that makes it MUCH faster and responsive.

It's definitely not slow. I spent 30 minutes and turned off all the logging and upped the cpu to 1.5ghz.

I'm now playing Angry Birds HD with a few browser windows open, a few apps (epicurious, email, chat, photo/videos, maps) open AND youtube webpage open playing a video at the same time. The impressive thing is that I can even quickly switch between the apps without any lag. This is just a test, but it's nice to know how smooth it can be.

Got my touchpad today as well and, wow, what a cludgy tablet. It's slow, occasionally freezes up at random, and while web browsing I noticed many times chopped text. Scrolling webpages also has a herky-jerky type of feel to it.

Processing power be-damned I say a 1st gen iPad mops the floor with it as far as web browsing and responsiveness goes. Even the plastic buttons on wiggle around and feel cheap. It's like they got it 80% of the way there with some nice features tossed in, but completely skimped out on any real optimization to make it all gel together.

I'm not sure right now if I'll hold out on this for an android port. I may just flip it on ebay and wash my hands of it.

You really need to spend a little time tweaking it before making your final judgement.... But you are right, out of the box it definitely falls short. But for $100 bucks... Its a phenomenal piece of hardware.

posting from my non-updated touchpad. I like it. Its quick and responsive.

For those that are considering flipping their unwanted touchpads... Do your AT friends who weren't quite so fortunate and offer it at cost plus shipping to one of them instead of being a douche.

I did minimize logging right away and updated it later in the evening. It helped, but the browser is still slow. Doing side by side tests my iPad loads pages faster than this which is surprising because of age of the iPad. Sites I compared were misc pages on amazon, and the home pages of MSN and CNN.

Edit - could it be the extra flash content the touchpad is capable of?

Only problem I'm having right now is updating it and/or using the app store. Looks like an additional ~300,000 users is making the servers squirm.

Ah well, I guess I'll get one when people get sick of them and sell them on Ebay for $75.

If anyone wants to let one go at cost plus a $20 for your trouble, let me know. If you managed to get more than one, though, I wouldn't blame you for trying to ebay it and get enough back to make your own free.

So I got my (2) 16GB Touchpads today via FedEx around noon. I wasn't able to play with them until tonight. First impressions is the device isn't nearly as slow as some make it out to be. I'm used to a Droid though (as far as touchscreen hardware), so that may be why a little lag is natural to me.

I spent about 30-45 updating it, installing everything from Preware and then overclocking it to 1.5. I've downloaded a bunch of free apps that were suggested.

All I can say is wow. This thing is pretty awesome. There is absolutely no lag what-so-ever once you spend the time working the kinks out. Very impressive device and well worth the $85 I spent on it.

I basically followed this guide: http://forums.precentral.net/hp-touchpad/293028-new-touchpad-heres-your-get-started-guide.html

Good stuff and I look forward to playing with it over the weekend.

It's a shame HP couldn't use this as a lessons learned and fix their problems and create a V2. They really screwed themselves with all of the logging and crappy dev of webOS. But they gave up way too soon.

Damn, this thing flies after the patches and overclocking it to 1.5GHz.

The only minor niggle is there's color banding on the glowing effect when any card opens. Is this one of the patches doing it's thing or did I screw something up?

A big box from HP arrived today for me.... a ream of paper!

The Fedex tracking number for the actual TouchPad from HP finally showed something and shows the estimated delivery time as Saturday 27th. I didn't know that Fedex will deliver on Saturdays, but hopefully it's not a mistake. I don't want to be sucking my thumb again over the weekend reading posts about TouchPads.

In the meantime, the 16 GB one on my BestBuy order (which I bought for a friend) has been trackable for two days and is slowly getting its way here. Apparently this afternoon it arrived in a city about 2.5 hours from here. However the estimated delivery is still Monday. Oh well.

I can download apps fine (the free ones), but I can't seem to get my TouchPad to update. I tried to download that WebOS Doctor, but the website says that my serial is invalid. :/

Oh, and that stupid Audubon Birds app keeps on failing to install, and WebOS has this odd idea that to reinstall, it should redownload the application... all ~750MB of it.

EDIT:

I think I can see why people complain about this software... it simply isn't as good as other offerings, and it's really all the little things that add up. For example, GUI elements need to be more visually responsive when you interact with them. On iOS, when you hit a context menu item (such as Copy or Paste), it will highlight that option showing me that I hit it. In WebOS, the only way I can tell is if the action seems to occur. I've actually hit Paste in WebOS (entering the codes for the free software) and it didn't seem to do anything. That leads to another bug... how do you get back to the purchasing window if you click outside of it? The button still says "Purchasing..." and I can't seem to find a way to get back without closing the HP App Store and opening it up again. :\

yeah those links all say invalid now, oh wells. i'm going to tweak mine tonight. the thing is super quick even out of the box + update. i don't have any clue what some people are complaining about, i have a feeling they've really only used it in passing and haven't spent much time with it. it has a ton of ui features that just blow away everything the competition offers. the cards + multitasking alone is on another level. the little features like the top right menu with dim and what not. if you really dig into the usability it's quite impressive.

I dislike how the default web browser doesn't appear to have tabs and opening a new window actually takes a decent amount of time compared to iOS's pages or tabs (depending on browser). It just really seems that someone didn't trial run these with real people and consequently, the little annoyances remain.

It's very noticible when you want a new "tab." As near as I can tell webOS isn't just opening a new window, it's opening a new instance of the browser. This is great for working with the card system, but it means it really does take a long time (up to several seconds) to open a new browser, and sends memory consumption through the roof.

They've basically implemented Chrome-style process isolation - every new instance of the browser comes with its own process. It would be fantastic for stability purposes if it wasn't for the fact that the TouchPad (or any other tablet) simply doesn't have the resources for it.
