So I am trying to fix my friends HP touchsmart model IQ524(a touch screen all in one desktop). When I start it, the HP logo screen appears but then nothing. I can press f10 to enter setup, or esc for boot menu, then it says "entering setup" or "entering boot menu" but does nothing. There are no beeps and no other devices connected. I have not opened one of these up not sure if a CMOS reset would help. Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas? I don't think it would be under warranty but I want to check first before I open this up.

Other options are f11 for recovery or f9- diagnostics but neither one of those works either.

I saw this happen on a HP desktop upon power up when an external USB HD drive was attached to it and would take 20-30 minutes before Windows would start. I know you said there was nothing connected but just let it sit there on the HP logo screen for 30 minutes and see what happens.

It's very possible the hard drive is on it's way out. Run a diagnostics test on it. You can download an ISO of Parted Magic. Extract the ISO, using something like ImgBurn.

Be sure to change the boot order so that you can boot up w/ the CD.

that was part of the problem I couldn't even use a boot cd to start this machine. It was a bad hard drive though, I opened it up, unplugged the HD and got it to post. Installing windows now on a spare I had. Thanks for the suggestions.

One of the biggest pet peeves that I have with proprietary OEM systems is that they make it exceedingly difficult to enter the BIOS menu. Sometimes it is as simple as pressing F2 or delete key while booting. But there are some manufacturers who think they are being clever requiring a combination of keys -- I think it was a toshiba system or maybe HP -- I spent hours and hours trying to figure it out... turns out it was Shift + F11. Crazy.

So when you mentioned you couldn't change the boot order, I decided to download the user manual for that HP of yours.... I searched through the entire manual and not one single word of how to enter the BIOS menu. How stupid is that? They publish a user manual and don't include such info? HP can kiss my a*ss. This is NOT the only reason why I hate HP computers - just another reason to stay away from them altogether.

Glad you figured out it was a faulty HDD. Now you can move on to bigger & better things!
