Hi,

My 2.2GHz 1500 arrived yesterday and it is awesome! 15" SXGA+ screen is beautiful, and I got the upgrade to the 24x CDRW/DVD!!! I played Medal of Honor at 1024x768 with everything turned up and it was great - I was surprised by how good it was.

Anyway, did anyone else get a 1500 (or 900/2800) that was built in the USA, as mine was? Has anyone opened up the memory yet to see if there were any upgrades to 1 DIMM?

Staples called and said they're out of stock of the ze1201, offered to upgrade to a 4101 an no cost. Said the only difference was a faster processor, xp1500, and all other specifications were the same as I ordered, even when I asked if it had tv out. It's obviously fairly different, video card, ddr ram, slightly thicker etc, so she didn't exactly have the information in front of her. Anybody find out? TV-out?

Also, the big caveat, up to THREE WEEKS for the new one to arrive.

Whhheeeeeeee hhheeeeewwww!!!!!!

Guess who got their ZE1201 today!?!?!? That's right. DavemanUT!!!

First Impression...

Man, this thing is light. MUCH lighter than my Sony VAIO FXA47 (which is goin for sale in a few). And the blue lights LOOK AWESOME!!! I mean, they just jump right out at you. Beautiful.

Next, I play around with it. It runs hot, but not much worse than any other modern laptop. I'm definately going to go with 512 of ram. 128 just isn't enough (and 16 of that is goin to video). Screen looks great. Lappy is nice and quiet. The only thing I think sucks is the keyboard. Just has a "click" when u rest your finger on it (like, before you push it to type). Sounds cheap.

No free upgrades here.

I'm happy everyone else's deals seem to be coming through. I didn't order until VERY late in this deal (sat afternoon).

My lappy may not be as good as yall's, but I'll have $675 invested after a few MIRs.

Now the question is, who gets the UPC, and who gets a copy? I don't recall anyone saying anything about it.

Rossman,

Well I the bottom of my unit states Made in USA. I also have heard that some Compaq Evo models are made in USA (and these are essentially the same). My shipping is also from Houston, whereas others had the units shipped from Taiwan.

Another observation, the keyboard feels VERY solid, whereas others I have tried previously in CompUSA had "give" on both the left and right sides.

So.....anyone else get a Made in USA?

256 Kingston

For those wanting to upgrade their ram, here's a 256mb PC133 sodimm direct from Kingston for $26 shipped. I just got one, and I'll probably pick up another! Can't beat that with a stick. Nope, you can't.

I got a call from staples too so it must be about the free upgrade, but does that mean we miss out on the two $100 MIR?

DavemanUT,
Congrats on getting the ze1201! I, too, ordered mine late on Saturday, but according to the Staples scheduled delivery date, I won't see it until 10/18. What did Staples show as your expected delivery date? Also, great price on the Kingston RAM...you're sure it works with the ze1201?

Thanks!!! My delivery date was originally the 25th, then got moved to the 18th. I'd say you'll be seeing yours sooner than you think.

I just ordered the ram tonite (2 day shipping included), so it'll be here Saturday or Monday. I'm not POSITIVE that it will work, but it specifically says in the HP user manual that it takes PC133 SOdimms. If I were you guys, I'd go ahead and order the ram. If you don't have any more laying around, it'll be a frustrating couple of days with 112 before the 256 chip gets there.

I am kinda pissed at the laptop right now. From the factory there were ~30 icons on the desktop. HP put so much sh!t on there. I decided to do a clean install of winXP home, but it's telling me that the product key that I got with the computer is invalid. I guess HP has their own series of p-keys, and they won't work with an OEM winXP. That really pisses me off, cause now, not only do I have to reinstall everything, but all that crap will probably still be on there!!!!!

Wow, seems like all of you guys already tapped into the deal, can somebody please break down of the 1500 and the 900? I am thinking 900 because of hte cost being only 799 and maybe more with an upgrade to a 15in screen, how does the 1500 compare besides the obious usb2 and wireless option as well as the upgraded video card?

Thanks!

The key differences between the 900 and 1500 are as follows:

The 1500 has the Radeon 7500 chipset with 32MB dedicated video memory ; the 900 has Radeon Integrated Graphics (I have heard it is analogous to the Radeon 7000) with shared video memory. From benchmarks I have seen, while the Radeon IGP (as per 900) has the best graphics available on an AMD based laptop, it is still too slow for intense graphics a la FPS games.

The 1500 has Intel chips while the 900 uses AMD.

I think the 900 is a superb machine, the only reason I got the 1500 was for the better graphics. In fact, I would have liked the 2800 with the Radeon 9000, but Staples removed it as an option (Compaq still shows it as having a 30 day lead time).

The 1500 is performing beyond my wildest expectations - in fact, I ordered a Dell 2.53 desktop for gaming, but now may just cancel that, since the 1500 is fine.

Got the upgrade to ze1401 calll this morning.
I choose to decline after reading all the talk on the main thread about
the lucky people who managed to get in on the Compaq 1500T deal.

I also didn't want to get stuck not being able to get in on the Staples rebate because I think the deadline was in about 3 weeks.
Though I think you can get an extension for the rebate in this situation.
However, the CSR said I get to keep the luggage and I don't think Ebates will retract my discount.

So all is still well while I wait for a better deal.

I chose to upgrade, but are you sure that we aren't receiving the 4101? it is a much better system, and i thought that was the upgrade offer.

edit -
I searched HP's site and found no information on the 1401 - the numbers go to 12xx, then switch to 41xx -
I am very confident we upgraders will be receiving the radeon mobility chipset- woohoo!

I apologize.
I believe the upgrade is to the 4101, all I remember being told was that it was a 1500XP processor, and everything else was the same.
I was groggy when she named the model number so you very well may be right.

I did it.
I took the plunge on a laptop. I couldn't pass this deal up. Here is what I got:

Presario 900Z Mobile AMD Athlon 1800 1.53GHz ( 496779 )
20.0GB UDMA Hard Drive ( 494267 )
8X DVD/CD-RW (8X/8X/24X) Combo Drive ( 494272 )
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition ( 491706 )

Subtotal: $1,454.00
-$300.00 In Store Staples rebate on all built to order laptops
-$30.00 off $150 in store purchase
-$37.50 (Talked to staples manager, she said she would 1/2 my shipping)
-$50.00 off Staples printable coupon (they accepted it...Woot!)
+6% Sales tax=62.19
*Total: $1098.69
-$100.00 (Compaq Built to order mail in rebate)

=$998.69 after shipping and tax.

Not too bad with all the trimmings, custom built. Should be here in 1-2 weeks.
I guess I could have risked waiting until 10-13 to try the 150$ staples rebate, but that would kill my Compaq rebate due date.
I am always hesitant about them not accepting that many coupons at once, so I didn't risk it.

Thanks to all the contributors to this thread. I couldn't have gotten such a steal without all your help!
