Celeron M laptops are getting cheap! the upgrade model is a great price for all the extras you get.

Does anyone have any experience with the Celeron-M cpus compared to their big brother Pentium-m's or Athlon XP-m's? I have a D600 at work with a 1.6 cpu (2mb cache) and I love it, but am unsure about using a celeron, even though the new numbers look good.

From what I've heard and read, the Celeron M is kinda similar to the Pentium M but with half the cache and a slower FSB (400 on the Celeron vs. 533 on the Pentium). Not too big a hit on performance me thinks. Oh, and the Pentium M seems to have a better battery life too.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Forgot to mention this is not an in-store special, it is Computer-to-Order (CTO). You have to make it at the creation station and they will ship it to the store or your house. Means (hopefully) more stock than last weeks $500 laptop, but more waiting. Also because its CTO I believe you can mix and match parts, tho I doubt you'll get the huge rebates still.

I'm trying to compare the $649 ze4930US in this deal to special deal from Dell at

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/...&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=1od1102s&s=bsd

My main question is Dell has a Celeron 2.6GHZ, HP has a Intel® Celeron® M processor 350 at 1.3 GHZ. PC World article says:

"The HP, with a 1.4-GHz Celeron M 360 CPU, earned a WorldBench 5 score of 62. The Dell, with a 2.6-GHz Celeron chip, was slower, garnering a WorldBench 5 score of 54."

I know PC World is comparing a 1.4 GHZ when we actually have a 1.3 GHZ as part of this deal but I thought that that would make the perfomance of these 2 machines about equal. Thoughts?

If you configure the Dell machine with a G internal wireless option (and thus make it almost the same config as the HP), the price (without shipping but also without taxes that you would get from Best Buy) comes to $638. I am leaning toward the Best Buy deal even though it is a little more expensive because I can test my software and return it if it doesn't work like I expect (worried about Integrated Graphics).

The Dell machine has a smaller screen and POSSIBILY a smaller hard drive (I say possibly because the web site does talk about a free upgrade to 40 Gig) but PC World article also says about battery life "The Inspiron lasted a respectable 3 hours, 41 minutes in our tests, while the Pavilion managed an underwhelming 2 hours, 12 minutes."

I'd love to hear other compents about this comparison before I run need to make a decision in a few hours.

I don't think a 100MHz difference (between the two HP models) is going to make that much of a difference. You're most likely not going to notice it at all.

I tried to do the free 40GB HDD upgrade at Dell, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it. Maybe I'm just missing something. But it's $49 (30GB -> 40GB) which is a rip off for only 10 extra GB's, IMO.

I'd go for the HP instead. Seems like the better deal to me.

One other thing. From what I read, it seems the Dell was running on a 8 cell battery (standard for the 1150 series) while the HP had a 6 cell battery (standard for the ze2000 series), thus the difference in run times.

Anyone know how much they charge for the shipping? I know Office Depot adds $35-40 shipping for a configure to order laptop.

It's $50 shipping, making the 4930 a much better deal, you can get it same day with a combo drive, wireless, and 512MB. Sounds like a great deal to me, it's using a dothan celeron, so it's actually got 1MB cache (basically a first gen P-m)! Bleh, Dell's notebooks are going down hill anyway...

is it basically a first gen P-m? What other differences are there then between the older P-m's with 1mb L2/400fsb vs the new Celeron-m that sports the same numbers?
