I started to buy the Dell 2650SE, but I tend to over research purchase decisions and thought I?d share the findings of another laptop deal I found. Please look over this and let me know if you would purchase this or the 2650SE for the money.

HP @ www.hpshopping.com
($1261.00 + $59.99 Shipping ? 10% off - $100MIR = $1094.89)

P4 1.8Ghz (2.0Ghz for $50 more)
128MB PC2100 DDR (256MB for $50 more)
16MB S4 Graphics (Can be upgraded to 32MB ATI for $50)
15? SXGA+ LCD (14.1? XGA ? subtract $100)
Windows XP Home
20GB Hard Drive
DVD Drive
Built in 56K and 10/100 LAN

So, you could get this deal for $1004.89 if you opt for the 14.1? XGA as opposed to the 15" SXGA+. In addition, there are many different options @ HP. You can add wireless LAN, 32MB ATI Mobility and 256MB DDR for around $1245 after MIR, by switching to the zt1000 series.

Here is my opinion in regards to this system vs the Dell 2650SE:

GOOD - Only waiting for a $100 rebate as opposed to the Dell $300 rebate
GOOD - No salestax
GOOD - The HPs look cooler!
GOOD - Much more configurable than 2650SE
BAD -- No Ebates for HPshopping
BAD -- NO CDRW/DVD Combo (not an issue for me), but this can be had for an additional $100.

Now, for a feature by feature comparison, well as close as possible:

Dell 2650SE with 6% sales tax is $1402, $1102 after $300 MIR.

HP ZE5000 is $1239.89, $1139.89 after a $100 MIR.

These systems are the same (as far as I can tell), except the HP is a P4 1.8 and looks cooler .

***UPDATE***

Here's how to get the 32MB card instead of the 16MB video card. It looks like the final price is increased $45.

Go to HP Shopping and then click on Notebooks. Then on "Customizable notebooks". Here's the secret, instead of clicking on "customize" on the "featured customizations", INSTEAD ... use the drop boxes and select the ZE5000 and then in the second dropbox, select "Pentium 4 2.0Ghz/512MB". You can change the processor and memory back to normal, but you have a 32MB card now. This IS NOT the Radeon 7500.

I know my post was confusing, I guess the point is you can get a comparible system to the Dell 2650SE for $1139.89 after $100 MIR.

OR if you are like me and are willing to forego the DVD\CDRW combo for a DVD, you can buy it for $1049.89.

Reading your post gives a sense of Deja Vu. I agonized over which laptop to purchase for the whole day Friday and ended up with the exact one you are talking about, The Ze5000 series.

To start with, you can readily find reviews that the Dell 2650 is bested by a pentium III 1.2 processor based laptop in every bench mark out there, read various reviews online. Realize that a typical bus on a pentium 4 is 400 mhz, the bus on a 2650 is 200 mhz.

The bus on the Ze5000 is 400 mhz. Also the processor on the Ze5000 can be upgraded later on as the desktop processor comes out, not soldered on the motherboard, had tech support confirm this, so you can put a faster pentium 4 in as they get cheaper.

Finally you are concerned about getting the 32 meg versus the 16 for graphics. I made my purchase on the phone. Ze5000 with 15 inch SXGA screen, pentium 4 2.2 processor, 20 gig hard drive, 128 mb memory for $1284.89 delivered, then there is a $100 mail in rebate so the real price is $1184.89 When I configured I went with the 16mb graphics, only shows the 16mb graphic option for configure to build online. When I did it on the phone, I was told that the 32mb is $50 more. The next day I called back to reconfigure and get the extra graphic memory. Sales was dumbfounded to see that it was by default it was showing I was getting 32mb at no extra money already, there actually was not even an option to do the 16mb, so I got the 32 without paying the extra $50 like it shows online.

Finally compare this system to the Hp ZE5170 which is the version that you get in the store.

Hope this was helpful.

Very helpful! Was it easy to use the 10% off code over the phone? Did you get the free shipping too? I'll try that, thanks!

I don't understand why they would offer a 16MB video card by default either. When you click on the 5000 it clearly says, "Desktop Replacement". I don't think a 16MB video card could replace too many desktops these days!

Your post was most helpful, thanks again!

I didn't find your post that confusing. If anything it was very well laid out and informative, thank you!

It's always nice to create a thread which is loaded with information about the product and the Hot Deal. Reviews and product comparisons are even better!

OK, I'll try it tomorrow ... simply for the 32MB Video card!

ALSO, read my post here for the coupon code. I didn't post the 10% code here, because Anand has a "No Coupon" policy. If I can't link to another deal site, please let me know and I'll fix it.

How do you do this? When I try, it says only one coupon can be used. If there is a way to save an additional 5% that would be nice. Some instructions would be nice!.

I'm a student of life, does that count?

AWESOME! This is a go for me now.

Included this info in original post.

Darno, I'm sorry but I could not find it. I have an idea where it is ...

Look through the technical support for specs!

OK, anyone know where I can get an external firewire HDD/CDRW enclosure? I thought I saw one on compgeeks a while back that took 5.25 and 3.5 inch drives for around $50, w/ that, I'd be set for life!

You guys better add some RAM in with that price. XP runs like A$$ with anything less than 256MB.

BTW- If this doesn't come with a floppy, you can add a USB floppy for $49.99 with a $50 rebate.

Anyone have this laptop yet? How is the performance? I'm thinking of getting this deal tonight if I hear decent things about it. Good? Bad?
