today was the start of the second semester at my school (Junior @ HS) I went into Computers I. (semester class) hoping that i might learn something interesting. The ciriculem (spelling) says that we will be spending most of our time on word processing..... This is the thing that I hate about HighSchool, They are passing this off as a required class but its totally useless. Least I would surely hope that they TYPING class that we were required to take our Sophmore year would have covered us on that. Anyways, Rant session.

That must be boring to tears. It's a little disheartening to see how computer illiterate some of the kids in those class are.

In my HS, I'm taking Visual Basic 1, VB 2, Java, C++, and AP CS.

Face it, anyone who is a member here is probably not going to get anything out of High School "Computers I" class.

I think there's only a couple different types in a class like that which isn't mandatory:
- Clueless newbies who think turning the monitor off is how they reboot the PC.
- People who can build a PC in their sleep from parts, and spend the entire class screwing up the computers thinking they are l33t, when all it does is cause the school to spend more of their scarce money on fixing it and installing more restrictive software
- People who have used a PC for AIM, and think that's all there is to know. They sign up looking for an easy A.

Realistically, what do you think they are going to be able to cover? Most people need to know how to use Word, so that's what they teach.

Don't worry, you will say the same when you're in college. I just took this class called Management Information Systems thinking I may learn a little more about the business side of computers, well it was a waste of time even though I got an A. For labs we had to do projects in Excel and Word. Get used to it buddy, cuz you will be doing the same thing when you get into college unless of course u take some classes that are geared towards programming like VB and C++

I knew my HS computer class was pointless when my teacher said (in 2000 now, not 1980) that 56k modems cost $300.

yes this is true, in my case, and I'm sure many others, the student(s) know some much more than the teacher. Although I have one good teacher for a graphics class I'm taking, but he's good because he drives up from the local college to teach.

well I also took computers two this year to see if that was any better. Seeing as the school really didnt think about the whole. Prerequisite thing they put me in both classes on the same semester. Its the same class..... Mabe im just unussually addept at these things but whats the point in teaching something that can be learned on the persons own in the span of ten , fifteen if you started the computer for the first time five minutes ago, minutes?

I Really wish that the school would pay someone some money so that we could get some good programing classes. Instead the school wont do anything and im stuck in a class were I allready know the entire cericulem.

My friends and I used to have a blast in computer class in my high school. We would get the assignments done it 5 minutes, then play around on the school's network (it was 1992 and that was the coolest thing there was) until one of my friends shut down the network and was subsequently banned from touching another computer in the high school until graduation (1995).
....damn, if I wasn't such a looser in high school, I would really miss it *sniff*

I took computer applications in 9th grade, learned what I already knew about Word and Excel. Took an "Internet" class in 11th grade and learned the HTML that I already knew. Am taking business co-op this year and am learning how to type at the moment. People in the class thinking their 30wpm is fast just get a chuckle from me and my 90+.

When I was a junior I took every computer class in my school. In our words per minute timed test we would have to graph or typing. Well the highest it went to was 60, and I was typing 120. I had to double the size of the graph in order to fit my progress on there. It was a joke when I saw the guy's sitting next to me getting 20wpm.

Oh and I taught all those classes, but the lamest was when I taught the "internet" course, where I had to teach the class basic HTML. and I mean basic....it was lame.

the funny thing is that the teacher that the school suckered into doing this job is one of my former teachers in my younger grades. We never really got along, if you would consider us trying to kill eachother such But now I get to make her life interesting... Nothing to bad just some fun quirks here and there.
