No telling if there is any truth to it, but rumors from people close to the situation have said the refs were using racial slurs against the John Jay players.

Does it make their actions right? No. Would it surprise me? No.

yeah read that too. though it was coming from JJ players claiming it. so who knows.

Not that it matters.

Yeah, I read on ESPN comments from someone claiming "I was at the game and the ref was using racial slurs and rigged the game" LMAO. First, how they hell do you hear the ref on the field using racial slurs when you're in the stands. Second, did the other team not have any black players? Third, where is your evidence he rigged the game. Damn, people can be so stupid.

Couldn't have said it better.

Congratulations kids, your arrogance and stupidity gets you the prize of jail time, assault/battery charges, and your entire career and sporting future completely fucked. Hope it was worth it.

I agree that they need to be punished but I'd make sure it wasn't solely on the public dime and the injured party was compensated in some way. Yet I'd hate for something like this to ruin their entire lives. I'll also agree that while 'they are just kids' and 'emotions were running high' we shouldn't ignore their actions but we also shouldn't ignore that they are human beings like the rest of us and should be treated so.

At this point he has a debt that he owes to the referee. The referee (victim) should have a say in the punishment and/or compensation.

I disagree. They assaulted a Ref. NO matter the reason there is no justification for it.

This shows they have so little self control that they can't wait until the end of the game and go through the proper channels. Instead they threw away all the training, time and any chance they had at playing college or pro (to be honest i doubt they had any chance anyway. very few make pro).

the punishment should be 1) criminally charged. 2) banned from playing any high school sports 3) since the assault happened at a school function expelled fits too.,

The sad thing is that if any of these players had been blue chip prospects this incident would get swept under a rug with a free ride to any number of universities.

It won't ruin their entire lives but it should ruin any chance they have at a future in sports and they should be punished for the felony that they committed.

Doesn't matter. This could be on the national news every day and that would not impact these guys futures if they can really play. Character doesn't count, no matter how big a scumbag a person can be he'll find a team willing to take him if he is good enough. The coach will give a well-prepared speech about second chances and personal growth and the kid would be allowed to suit up even if he disemboweled 100 orphan puppies live during halftime of the Super Bowl. That's why I'm hoping the ref presses charges, if the law doesn't get involved the sports system is geared to forget all about this down the road.

Just saw this on the news. These two could face felony charges because the helmets were used as weapons.

Wait this was in Texas? Why didn't the ref put em down? Good shoot!

Goodness. Talk about clueless and ignorant. You can not just have gun anywhere you like in Texas.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the places you “cannot” carry your concealed handgun, even though you have your Texas CHL. If you have more specific questions, we are just an email or phone call away.

If gambling or betting is taking place, leave your concealed handgun in your secure vehicle. (Racetracks, Casinos, para-mutual betting, etc.)

Sporting events, both Amateur and Professional.

Stealing crab legs, sexual assault, yelling "fuck her in the pussy" in the cafeteria, and you still get drafted first.

Football players have done terrible things while not playing football, and they are allowed to continue playing football.

The problem for these 2 kids....they attacked the game of football, during a football game.

Oh yeah bud, he is playing QB for... (wait for it).... a COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Oh boy oh boy, he is headed for the big leagues

Nope, as far as I understand, he is still fucked. Some pissant profit community college is willing to go low enough to draft him. It's not like he is getting paid like the pros.

To me, it still sounds like he is fucked.

The stealing crab legs was explained. Supposedly, there was a guy at the grocery store that knew who Winston was and gave him free stuff. Winston did not say anything about that until much later. Which is believeable as it is a college town and people love FSU.

Sexual assault charges were dropped by the cops and university did nothing about it after their investigation. Could it have been investigated more? Sure, it could have been investigated more at first by the police. He had witnesses, she did not. She filed a civil suit against him so wait to see where that ends up.

The yelling in the cafeteria was dumb. It was an Internet thing around that time, but still dumb.

This is true.

What didn't get enough exposure is because he received these crab legs for free and got caught in the security camera, he had to lie and admit to stealing even though he didn't do it. If he wouldn't admit to stealing and told the truth that he had been getting these crab legs for free (apparently this wasn't the first time), he would have been investigated by the NCAA for receiving improper benefit, potentially invalidating his NCAA eligibility status, jeopardizing his last year in college football and a good chance of getting the whole school sanctioned for playing an ineligible student.

So this all happened because he (and the school) was better off after he plead guilty on a criminal charge, received his punishment (some fine and community service, suspended a couple of baseball games), and as this happened over the spring/summer, there would then be zero repercussion on the football team the coming football season.

In other words "If you admit to petty theft, although we all know you didn't really do it, you could finish your college career in high notes, there won't be any NCAA investigation, you and the school will be safe, and all will be good". And that's what he did.

I don't know about you, but I think the whole thing is completely fucked up.

True but if every athlete that got these types of "improper benefits" lost their eligibility, there would be very few schools/athletes left to compete. As Ohio State found out in the tattoo scandal, it's not the crime, it's the cover-up.

Oh, and with regard to "he had to lie and admit to stealing even though he didn't do it"...of course he did it. It doesn't matter whether an employee there said it was ok or not, he still stole from the store.

I don't think you get it. There was never any actual theft going on. The crab legs were complimentary, the employees are allowed to give them out. Everybody knows about this understanding between the stores, employees and the players, including the store management, and this is apparently a pretty common thing (complimenting football players with free food, etc). The only person that is clueless about this is the person who leaked the security videos, which was how the world found out about this. After it was leaked, because now that there's video evidence that the store couldn't deny, the police had to be involved, and there's no way around that. Him admitting to petty theft is a small price to pay (by him) that avoided a lot of people a lot of problems.

(I also heard that the person who leaked the video lost his job at the store, but I can't say if this is accurate or just rumors. He certainly messed up there by creating problems that supposedly didn't exist)

And yes, it's exactly as you said, the fucked up part is the cover up. Winston and FSU football got away with potentially being investigated by the NCAA for a significant violation *because* he admitted to theft that he didn't commit.

No...

If store management were involved, this never would have made the light of day because the police would not have been called. Yes one or more employees gave this athlete the go-ahead to take the food without paying but that doesn't make it legal.

If your buddy works at Best Buy and he "gives" you a free blu-ray and you walk out without paying, you have committed theft.

And you're wrong on the timeline - the video was leaked/released after his arrest, not before. Winston left the store and Publix employees called the police afterward. The police then went to his apartment and cited him for petty theft. This all happened the same evening. The video was released/leaked a week or two later.

I agree wholeheartedly. "Laing said the district is trying to get multiple accounts of what happened leading up to the play and determine what instigated those events." Is the district saying that sometimes, such behavior might be warranted?! There is no place for that in sports, ever. These two should be made an example of - it's a short video clip that could be replayed over and over in locker rooms (or whatever rooms coaches use for game film) with a warning, "the two players who did this were banned from sports teams at the school and spent a few weekends in jail." It speaks volumes that the players were only "suspended" and not immediately cut from the team. No integrity.
