This is true.
What didn't get enough exposure is because he received these crab legs for free and got caught in the security camera, he had to lie and admit to stealing even though he didn't do it. If he wouldn't admit to stealing and told the truth that he had been getting these crab legs for free (apparently this wasn't the first time), he would have been investigated by the NCAA for receiving improper benefit, potentially invalidating his NCAA eligibility status, jeopardizing his last year in college football and a good chance of getting the whole school sanctioned for playing an ineligible student.
So this all happened because he (and the school) was better off after he plead guilty on a criminal charge, received his punishment (some fine and community service, suspended a couple of baseball games), and as this happened over the spring/summer, there would then be zero repercussion on the football team the coming football season.
In other words "If you admit to petty theft, although we all know you didn't really do it, you could finish your college career in high notes, there won't be any NCAA investigation, you and the school will be safe, and all will be good". And that's what he did.
I don't know about you, but I think the whole thing is completely fucked up.
