The Citibank savings account requires that you have a checking account with them as well to get the 4.75%.

Which probably is not too difficult a requirement for many people here, including me. I moved all my money there instantly, and the transfers between that and your checking are immediate, which another important benefit. No more waiting 3-5 days.

Ideally they will keep the rate competitive and then I can just use this and my checking account...but I have a feeling they will decrease the rate once people start adoping it.

that's assuming you don't need to deal with actual cash or actually have a citibank atm near you. HSBC provides an ATM card you can use to access your savings account. unfortunately i haven't found a HSBC ATM around here yet.

They will stay up as long as Bernanke keeps raising the prime rate.

oh sweet jesus, glad i choose hsbc... hopefully the rates stay up for a while

How did you recognize me without my sandles and beard?

It will stay up for a little while at least. As esquared pointed out, Bernanke and the FMOC are in tightening mode right now with at least a .25% jump expected at the end of this month (some expect .50% upwards). Also, real strong push right now (about 70% chance) to go another .25% in August (depends on .25 or .50% in June, IMO).

Worse, it doesn't work at Safeway when I buy stuff and try to get cash back.

Emigrant Direct will probably match in a few days. ING will always lag behind. Time to move more to HSBC and reward them for the quick move after the Fed raised.

HSBC is slow as hell... it took em like a week to approve my app, and now I'm still waiting on my user name and password to be snail mailed to me. This is the longest it's ever taken me to do a financially related deal.

i thought the same thing, but once it's all said and done, you'll be happy to have such high earning rates

So I'm new to online banking.

At this time, which is the best place to open an account?

The ones I've read about on AT are: HSBCdirect, Emigrant Direct, & ING Direct.

I just want a simple account to hold money for daily living needs, bills, etc., plus a credit card / ATM card.

Which is the best place to open an online bank account at this time?

If you want an account that's easy enough for my grandma to use, but has a significantly lower interest rate, go with ING.

If you want a consistent rate-leading account with some caveats go with Emigrant (security stuff is annoying) or HSBC (slow ACH transfers, long signup process).

Did anyone open an HSCB account and was supposed to get a $25 BestBuy Gift card?

I just opened one up a couple weeks ago, everything is verified and I have transferred money already to the account, but no where did they mention anything about my BB GC...anyone else in the same boat as me?

For those that have an HSBC savings account ... can any of you login to access your account ? I haven't been able to since I've had it for about 2 months...

In Firefox I get a javascript alert: "Error Code: -12227"

In IE, "The page cannot be displayed"

EH?

Tried different computers ... completely different internet connections ... same result. Does it work for anyone else ?

I've been happy with GMACBank, they're back down to 5% for $500+, close enough to not matter 5.05 vs 5.00. They're usually at or .05% below the rest within a couple weeks of a change.
