Well one of the fans stopped working on my 290x. Should I just get an aftermarket one for both my 290x's since they are paired? I am gonna have them for probably 6 months more at least. Can anyone give me a link to a decent aftermarket cooler?

Is it still under warranty? Should be, if so then RMA it. Might get a 390x back

Why wouldn't they if they broke by themselves? I had a couple of XFX DD 290Xs fans stop working and they shipped me replacement HSFs.

Okay well I'll see what I can do about that. I might even just get better fans anyways. What are some good fans that I should use for the next 6 months?

What I did in this situation with my R9 290 was take the fan shroud off and zip tied 2 case fans onto the heatsink on the card. They ended up working much better than the regular fans but obviously its not a "great looking" solution and you'll have to have room for it.

I put an arctic accelero extreme 3 on mine a few months back. It was actually a massive improvement in terms of operating temperatures and noise. The only problem was that it dumped so much heat into my computer chassis that I had to run my HTPC with the cover off until I replaced the card with a GTX 1070 last week.

I should have thought of that before I bought it really, but I had no idea just how much heat this card can put out when it's not being ejected from the case. The thing gets HOT when your case doesn't have the ventilation necessary to get rid of the heat fast enough. Of course I was working with HTPC class cooling, which is more noise oriented than airflow, so YMMV.

you can buy people's 290 HSF's off of ebay, some watercooler people will sell the shroud online. Definitely see if you cant RMA it for free though first

I'm selling my 2 EK R9 290 waterblocks for a really great price. See the for sale forum.

This. I run the accelero extreme III on my reference 290 as well. Keeps the card much cooler than the reference cooler while being whisper quiet, even at 100% fan speed. It also allowed for me to undervolt my card while maintaining a slight OC . OP, I would look at the accelero extreme IV for your 290x. These solutions can be a little pricey, but they are worth it if you plan on keeping the card for a bit. Could even help with resale value when the time to sell them does come around.

I second the Accelero Extreme IV. Or buy second hand shroud.

:sneaky::sneaky::sneaky:

Or an excuse to grab an RX 480?

Can't really say which you should buy, but I figured I'd give you my experience with the G10.

It works really well, but it might be a pain to set up with its pump and fan headers and lack of VRM cooling and kind of bad instructions.

Depending on your case, you can have all that heat pushed right out with a decent static pressure fan on low and you'll have a lot less noise compared to a R9 290 with XFX DD setup (90c+ with max case fans, GPU fans, just could not manage the heat) and decent temps or a bit of noise and very good cooling. You'll want to add this kit to get proper VRM cooling. RAM seems to be okay without heatsinks, but you might want to add that too. I spent about $200 total to cool an R9 290x and 290 with G10s, H55s and two VRM kits. So, if you do one, ~$100.

Gelid VRM cooling kit:

All that said, you could take the shroud off and ghetto mod with zip ties and a spare fan.

I just replaced my MSI 290x Lightning's heatsink with a used Kraken G10 + Corsair Hydro H55 combo, and my temps went from 94C -> 60C. VRM temps are 84/64 when mining but I've got the Gelid VRM kit coming in so VRM temps should go down further.
