There is no best HSF. Swiftech MC462A, Thermalright SK6, OCZ Gladiator, Millenium Glaciator, and the Taisol CGK760092 are among the favorites. As far as fans go, cooling is inversely proportional to the loudness. The more air you move, the louder it will be. Check KDComputers or Plycon.

And don't forget to read this thread.

Yes, all heatsinks are quiet, it depends which fan they are using to how loud they are

Anything fitted with a High Output Delta fan is going to be noisy. A 30CFM or less fan is pretty noiseless but if you want really quiet you are looking at the sub 24CFM range. The Taisol has a 21CFM fan on it as default and it's very quiet, I could hardly hear mine.

i just recieved the Gladiator / golden gate. i bought it from this Web Site.

it costs me $19.98 shipped. that's including s&h here ppl. it's one of the top performers. i got it w/ the 27 cfm fan. it's very quiet and it's currently running my 1.0 ghz @ 1.2 ghz full load at 49 degrees. that's not bad. very good. i've had the SK6 and have the WBK38, both w/ delta fans and they give comparable temps. w/in 1 or 2 degrees.

this is the one if you want great quiet performance at a GREAT Price.

There is no such thing as good performer and quiet. The best performer is the MC462 but is noisy as hell and expensive as hell.Have you ever considered watercooling ?

PlatinumGold, only 2 degrees cooler with the SK6 and a delta? That is amazing, you might of changed my heatsink choice, although I have seem reviews where the sk6 w/ delta beats a gladiator w/ delta by 6 degrees, has anyone else seen results like these?

you might wanna mention how much that beast will cost. for that price i'd recommend the Swiftech over the Silverado any day. the swiftech is pretty quiet now w/ the new fan. not pushing the max anymore.

Good point. If I had to build an aircooled box, the Swiftech is the only HS I would use. The Silverado's only advantage is it's quiet,

the swiftech is also quiet compared to the delta's. w/ the sanyo fans they use.

dollar for dollar the swiftech is a better deal than the silverado. i still don't think it's the best bargain dollar for dollar. there are better places i can spend that 40 to 60 dollar difference i would get w/ a very good hs, like the glaciator or the Gladiator / golden gate.

For my 1.4 athlon I am using a Thermaltake VolcanoII. 36 cfm and 31.5 dB...I consider that a pretty good specs. Thoughts?

p.s. i bought it at puicorp.com

I actually use the CAK38 with a 7200 Delta and I don't think its too loud. Then again I'm pretty much deaf

My two cents (worth even less...)

I bought one of those adaptors which allows a larger fan to be mounted on the heatsink. Plycon.com sells them. They are pricey, but you get a lot of air movement for little sound. My setup has an 80mm high volume Sunon fan (42cfm at 32dbm 3200rpm) on an 80mm to 60mm adaptor into a Taisol heatsink. Since this large fan runs at 3200 rpm, it is very quiet. These little "neckdown" adaptors are a bit pricey (around $38) but the result is very good. They even make 92mm to 60 mm adaptors if you really want some serious airflow. Some 92mm fans will move around 50+cfm I think. You would need a good clip mechanism once you put some height and weight on the CPU, and you would not want to bounce the machine around with so much bulk on top.

I have the FOP-38 w/Delta fan. I love it (don't have to worry about overheating), but, I wouldn't wish this noise on my worst enemy.

Well, it definately doesn't fit the criteria for quiet, but the good ole FOP 38 with the delta raised 1/4 inch with spacers gives any heatsink a run for the money for maximum cooling ability.
Ambient temp 30c
Case temp 35c
Cpu temp 43c
AXIA 1000@1475MHz 1.87v, full load (Seti running for minimum of 1 hour)
