HSF recommendation: e6400 ??

I've read some of the threads on custom Heatsink and Fan (HSF) combos, but didn't come away with any clear and persuasive advice.

I'm thinking of buying an OEM e6400 CPU I saw somewhere for about $160, so if I do that I'd add my own HSF. I wouldn't be overclocking in the extreme, but I would like the flexibility to get up to around 3.0Ghz, maybe a little higher. No need to push it as far as some on these boards have proven is possible, so that should mean I don't need a higher-end cooler.

Cost is a factor, as I'd like to stay in the $20-$35 range, and hopefully toward the low-to-mid side of that. Otherwise I'd probably go with a retail e4300/e6300, begin with stock-cooling and buy a custom HSF down the road when I may need/want more overclocking.
Having it be reasonably quiet is a bonus, and I'd pay a few bucks more to keep it from being too noisy.

Any recommendations for such a HSF?

This one is really quiet, and somewhat cheap in a relative manner. I'm using it and it hasn't let me down, but then I'm still working on my OC. BTW my (E6300) OC is presently at 2.53GHz and it's idling @40. It's not the best, but it's quiet. It appears to be a clone of a very similiar CoolerMaster HSF.

The ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro ACFZP7 Socket 775 was selling for about $25 and had great reviews. In fact it was so popular that most etailers are OOS until mid-march or charging 2x or 3x that much for the few they have left *cough* newegg.

But that micro center deal on the OEM E6400 for $160 sold out in a few hours and was possibly a one-time thing. I wouldn't count on seeing that price again before the new models launch in April.

Since the stock HSF does ok for modest overclocks, you might just as well go ahead and get a retail E4300/E6300 if you need it NOW. They're pretty widely availble for $160-$180 and aren't likely to drop much more in the near future.

It's above your price range by about $15, but look around for a Tuniq Tower 120. (about $45-50)
It's definitely the best HSF out there. Check any review. (AT has one).

Freezer Pro 7's can be had for $20-25 and are well worth it. Top notch fan for the price.

Any links for the Freezer 7 Pro which are supposedly to be found for $20-$25 according to some posters here would be greatly appreciated. (Outdated info or reality?) Newegg is at $69.99 plus shipping...

I just checked ChiefValue.com and couldn't find it there... They had a Freezer Pro for AMDs, but not the Freezer 7 Pro.

As an earlier poster pointed out, the e6400 OEM from Microcenter.com is no longer available, so I missed out on that great deal. They come and go fast, as usual. I suppose that leaves me going back to the e4300 or e6300 for my needs...

It depends on your motherboard. The recommendations here are good if the motherboard chipset have fans. If your motherboard chipset have just heat sinks then I'd look for a cheap version of the Big Typhoon where the fan blows down and not only cools the CPU but indirectly helps cool the chipset. I own the original Scythe Ninja which is excellent at CPU cooling and I never considered the surrounding chipset until someone brought it to my attention. From his recommendation I decided to go with the Big Typhoon this time around and I couldn't be happier.
