I have one. Demo: Jurassic Park. Put a glass of water on the table and when T.Rex comes along, you will know it.

2500 watts RMS, I bet the price tag is also 10x as much

It's actually even more than that. I imagine it kicks ass, though!

HSU makes nice subs for the price. I got my STF-2 at Compusa a few years ago when they were being closed out. I got it for $175. It is hooked up to this computer and sounds great! . I have dual SVS 20-39cs+ subs on my home theater system with a 1000 watt sampson amp on those. I have been tempted several times to hook the SVS subs up to the computer just for fun.

I have to chime in and also express my satisfaction with HSU. The VTF-2 pairs up nicely with my Maggies. Definitely worth the money, and Dr. Hsu keeps well involved with his customers. I haven't checked the site in a while, but he used to personally recommend placement in a room based on dimensions you provide.

D'oh! I bought an STF-3 and it seems to have arrived DOA. I have contacted Tech Support and hopefully they will work well with me. I hope not to have to send it back in, because this thing is large and quite heavy. In the meantime I sold my old modded Audiosource SW-15, so now I am subwoofer-less. Grrrrr . . .

EDIT: see update below - the unit is now working beautifully.

We're talking about 300-500 subwoofers here. What's the point on bring in a $10K sub?

have my whole setup hooked up with my HSU STF-3. My god, the thing is a LOT more powerful than I was expecting. I'm very satisfied

That sucks about the DOA arrival iliopsoas. Have you tried unscrewing the amp in the back? maybe a wire to the speaker/amp came disconnected during shipping.

I got it figured out. After I posted that message, I looked at Dr. Hsu's Troubleshooting thread in their FAQ forum (the info there is slightly different than that in the owner's manual, in that the forum instructs a user in my situation to remove the speaker to check on the connection between the amp and the speaker, whereas the manual just says to take the unit for service).

I removed my STF-3's driver (which is heavy as hell, BTW), and found two things: a small wooden brace (it's about 2.5 inches long and triangular in cross-section) was detached and floating around inside the case, and one of the spade connections on the speaker was slightly bent, and the corresponding wire disconnected.

I checked all the apparent places where this brace might belong, and can't see that one is missing. I removed it, straightened the spade connector and reattached the wire, then reinstalled the driver.

The unit works great now! I am very pleased. I have contacted Hsu to ask them what they want me to do about the brace, but it certainly doesn't appear to be anything worth worrying about.

 glad to hear it's working now. Was there a lot of bracing inside that was left? (I'm assuming so, I haven't seen any pictures of the insice of and HSU) It's probably not worth the trouble of finding out where one small brake goes as it's probably something unnoticeable.

Another vote for this deal.

The STF-2 and STF-3 are as good as it gets at these prices. They significantly outperform anything even close to this price range from B&M shops. The nearest competition to the STF-3 ($469 on sale) is the SVS PB12-NSD, and that costs $599.

[I have a STF-2 in my bedroom and a SVS PB12-NSD in my TV room -- I bought it before the Hsu sale.]

There's a ton of bracing. Hsu tells me the piece is only there to provide support during manufacturing and glue setting, and that its absence won't create a problem.

I'll bet this will blow that Hsu out of the water.

Perhaps. I think the difference between the PartsExpress 500w amp and Hsu's 300w BASH amp is probably academic, but if anything I'd think Hsu's driver would be better. It seems highly speculative to say the PE sub would blow a Hsu out of the water. I guess one never knows . . .

I write this after less than a week with my STF-3 - holy moly! I switched from a modded Audiosource SW-15, which is hardly a purist's sub, but not a bad product, particularly with the internal soundproofing I added. I wouldn't have thought there'd be a huge difference between the SW-15, with its 15-inch driver, and my Hsu 12-inch sub, but in fact the Hsu has transformed my system. I live in a small two-story house, and I now realize I need to Hsu-proof the whole place, as many objects, cabinets, and even windows that never rattled with my Audiosource are making themselves evident with the STF-3. Meanwhile the sub is much less prone to bottoming out, and I haven't really heard it struggling, even at very high volumes, the way the Audiosource often did. I have yet to really break in the new sub, but I am writing this listening to the Rolling Stones' Beggar's Banquet, and the whole place is really booming. It has been truly thundering during some movies (including, curiously enough, Beerfest, but also The Aviator among others).

The STF-3 is a remarkably musical, deep tool, and it has definitely enhanced my system. I was able to sell my Audiosource for $100, so the upgrade cost me about $400 - I have no reservations whatsoever about the trade. During this sale Hsu has pre-announced their new line, but for my purposes the STF-3 still feels like a stellar deal.
