HTC 8x vs Nokia 822

Hi All,

My beloved DroidX broke and I've got to get a new phone. I'm a big fan of the Windows UI and so I've got to pick between the 8x and 822 on Verizon. I know the HTC has more of a media aspect to it, while the Nokia has a great camera and is a few bucks cheaper (although the price difference isn't really a big deal to me). Any thoughts or advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

HTC 8X >>>>>>>>>>> 822.

Reasoning: I wouldn't use a subsidy to get any phone that doesn't have a 720p display.

/thread done.

That was the general impression I had. But the person at the store (who's opinion I don't necessarily have a lot of faith in) was pretty anti HTC. Is there anything the 822 does better? Or anything I should consider regarding HTC?

I don't see any reason to be against a company, only against the particular products a company makes. No one would judge Apple by Ping or the iPod HiFi, so perhaps that guy had a poor impression of a past HTC phone, but I'd say the HTC 8X is an excellent phone to buy, and far superior to the 822 in every way. You do lose a few special Nokia apps, but I don't think that's a good reason to get the 822 (if it were the 8X vs. Lumia 920, that would be a different story, see my signature).

The Verizon 8X also has built-in wireless charging without requiring any special covers, which is quite cool. I think I've plugged in my 920 twice to charge since November.

The person at the store might have seemed anti HTC because they might have more unsold 822's or their profit margin/store commision might be higher with the 822.

I would go with 3rd party opinions over any salesman 24/7.

The 822 has the advantage of the excellent (exclusive) Nokia suite of apps - Nokia Drive, Nokia Transit, Nokia Music, and a few others. However, when it comes to the phone itself, the 8x is superior in just about every way. Better screen, better build quality, better camera. Definitely go with the 8x. I mean, I have the 920 on AT&T and I'm considering swapping it out for the 8x....if only the Verizon 8x were available on AT&T....

I like my 8x quite a bit. I've had it a couple months, no complaints. I picked it over the nokia because it was better in every respect. My prior phone was an iphone4. I liked it quite a bit and carried it for 1 1/2 years.

Basically, it came down to either the 8x or an iphone5, and I went with the 8x. No regrets at all, I really like this phone.

One thing you need to keep in mind with the HTC 8x is that it is a uni-body phone. There isn't any expansion slot for a micro-SD card. So you are going to be stuck with the 8GB or 16GB internal memory. It is this very reason I went with the 32GB Nokia 920.

You stole the words out of my mouth.

I have a Nokia 920, too.

Well, if he has Verizon there's little point in suggesting a 920 (for the time being anyway, supposedly a high end Nokia of some kind coming to Verizon in the coming months).

That said, the 822 is actually a pretty solid phone. I used both it and the 8X for a couple weeks and liked them both for different reasons. As someone else pointed out, the advantage of Nokia is that they do have a number of exclusive apps that are really, really good.

For the record, my experience with Nokia Drive has been piss poor. The absolute worst navigation I've ever used.

I use Nokia Drive almost on a daily basis for work and it's solid; my opinion anyways. What don't you like about it if you don't mind me asking?

I couldn't live with the screen of the 822 or the size. My wife and I each have an 8X (I moved up from a HTC HD7, it's her first Windows Phone) and we couldn't be happier with them.

Seriously the 8x has to be one of the sexiest phones I have ever seen. HTC has really been stepping up their game as far as phone design is concerned. Too bad they're still hemorrhaging money.

Given you live in America, you should be able to function without Nokia maps. I love my Lumia 920, but I can't rightfully recommend the Lumia 822 as a "high end" device. The only thing that sets it apart from the "flagship" Windows Phones is lower screen resolution, but that is definitely a big deal to some people.

The HTC 8X is a very nice device. If 16 GB of storage is sufficient, then it will be perfect for you.

Not once, ever, has it given me a sensible route. One time, it had me going in circles - literally! Instead of going straight across an intersection, it told me to take a right, make a U turn, pass the intersection, make another U turn, then turn left. It does this kind of crap on a regular basis. I also don't like that it doesn't repeat street names; it says them whenever it's in the mood. Plus it drains my battery from 100% to 75% in about 10 minutes. This is the one thing I really envy from high end Android phones - nothing beats Google Maps.

But that's just my experience.

I haven't had any issues with routing. Google navigation does have some advantages over Nokia - I particularly like the route options you get - but the true offline nature of Nokia Drive is unbeatable.

Yes, the offline navigation is great.... assuming the location you're searching for shows up in the search results. That's another problem I've been having with it.

Yes the biggest problem I have with Nokia Drive is that the built in searching mechanism is pretty poor - however a big improvement in the WP8 version over the WP7 version is integration with the standard maps app. So I generally search for things either in Bing or Nokia maps, and then just tap "drive" and it opens navigation to that location.
