It's easier to install a ROM on Samsung, but you got spoiled in ROMs because of Qualcomm. If Samsung uses Exynos, you're fvcked. Look at i9100 and i9300 dev. It's been horrible.

So you are saying if the 600 ends up in all the American SGS4s that will actually be a good thing for me as a guy who wants to run CMs when Samsung stops supporting the device?

HTC was too cheap to advertise themselves. Now they're trying to advertise but good luck with that. Samsung spends crazy amounts on ads. Now you have LG and Sony in the game too.

This is true. Marketing and branding are pivotal. HTC is a joke in that regard. I have never seen an HTC commercial in my lifetime.
You guys have no idea how much it costs to advertise like Samsung does. Samsung has HUGE amounts of capital from their other cash-flush ventures. If they wanted to start making toasters, you better bet you'd be seeing Android toaster commercials on TV everywhere.

HTC, however, is a TINY company compared to Samsung. Comparing the two in terms of resources is laughable.

I worked for Lenovo for a while, arguably the HTC of the PC world until late, and you didn't see Lenovo TV ads for a long time because it is *expensive*

i agree with this. what hurt though is the market they are in. its not really about making good phones. i mean, you need that, but you also need to be hip and trendy. thats where the ads can really help. when the sgsIII came to market, nobody even knew it. the anti-apple ads drove sales through the roof.

I've got a One XL and I enjoy using it, even though it did take a while for them to finally release Jelly Bean for it.

I think their problem lies, like others said, with having too many products. I don't think my next phone will be HTC. It bothers me when companies focus too much on future products and not supporting the products and customers they currently have.

Saw Jellybean just got released for the One X for AT&T users, about 3 months after the Galaxy S3 (which was months after the first S3 globally got Jellybean). Don't know how much the delay is on HTC or AT&T, but if HTC is serious about competing with Samsung, they need to make sure their phones are updated earlier.

They can't afford to be worse in aspects like this.

An astonishing $11B spent on marketing by Samsung. The others don't even come close. HTC can't compete with that war chest.

god.. that is insane. this world is so messed up... all that money for commercials for one company, and half the world cant afford good food to eat

That is not just commercials. It is sponsorships, events, commercials, printed ads, etc. Apple is probably the only firm that only does tv commercials and adverts...

Then they need to spend the money wisely and focus on certain markets or whatever. Instead, they do nothing and let the carriers sell their products.

For the record, I really enjoy HTC's Android skin. It's the best I've used. Better than SONY's.

The new HTC One is a nice piece of hardware.

If it only had a removable battery, SD slot, ran stock Jellybean and was offered on all carriers it would be the phone to buy, hands down.

great hardware as always from HTC. Sexy looking phone and incredible build quality from Taiwan.

I just don't understand why these companies don't run stock Android with minimal and useful manufacturer add ons.

EVO 4G LTE got the JB update quite a while ago so me thinks ATT is at fault.
Yup.
The Sprint version has had JB since December 13th.
Both AT&T and Verizon are slow as balls in providing Android updates.

I think you're going to see more and more phones deep six the removable battery simply so they can use a larger battery while keeping a svelte phone. Removing the SD card lets them do two things, prevent the stupid from sticking a slow card and complaining about lag, and make massive profit margins on tiers of internal NAND.

HTC should, however, stop making custom phones for all carriers. Keep the One, with only radio changes. Offer it as 'This is our phone, its awesome. We will not be making a custom version just for you.'

Not going to happen anytime soon as long as the HTC and Apple agreement is in full force.

So far, the only manufacturer to make a Nexus that hasn't been hampered with supply issues and mostly QA defectfree is Samsung. Still waiting for Googolora to being something, anything, to market.

I agree it shouldn't be too hard for them either. I doubt the carriers want only Apple and Samsung to be the major players in the hardware business in a few years. It would give them even more control than they already have. Especially Samsung since at least in theory other companies can compete with them on Android phones.

If carriers were thinking rationally, they wouldn't be mucking up their phones in the first place. They would openly allow a phone OEM to sell a reasonable number of phones on their network (based on market/price segmentation) instead of effectively choosing winners and losers. All 4 of the American OEMs would have let HTC sell the One X, One S, and One V as a complete line so that "HTC One ..." became a real phrase people would say.

I can't emphasize enough that it was a real coup Samsung got when all 4 American carriers were desperate enough for an iPhone competitor that they willingly let Samsung launch essentially the same branded phone on all 4 carriers. The list of companies who have pulled off such a feat is 2: Motorola with the RAZR, and RIM with the Blackberry (and guess what, they were both extremely popular for their time).

At least in the US, HTCs failings have not been about product, but because Verizon and Sprint really don't want to give them a break. Oddly enough, for some reason, Sprint decided to drop the Evo branding and let HTC launch the One as the "HTC One", which I'm sure was a heated discussion. Now they just really need to get Verizon on board before they can actually sell a good number of handsets.

I think the One X was doomed to begin with in America. No SD card slot. Only 16 GB of memory for the AT&T model. Crippled multitasking. Pathetic marketing (that skydive ad, really?).

As much as I personally hate amoled screens, the SIII had an SD card slot, removable battery, felt better in your hand, a camera flush with the back plate, and was available on all four major American carriers. Yes, marketing is a huge advantage, but it wasn't the only reason it did so much better in America.

I think the HTC One has a lot more potential. That 64 GB model needs to be available in the States. (Especially because of no SD card slot.) SIV will have the advantage yet again with marketing but the HTC One will be available at Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile, which is a good first step.

The HTC one does seem to be a good looking phone. The 64Gb one seems no where though.

I'm certainly looking forward to some user reviews after its been out for a month or so.

why do people care so much about SD card slot, I'll never understand. How hard is it to adapt and utilize home and cloud storage using blutooth, wifi, LTE and HSPA+.

If one travels a ton, learn to juggle between phone, tablet and laptop. It's really easy.

To those who "must" have 20,000 songs on their phone....I am speechless. I only carry flac files with me and 16 gig is plenty for myself.

Well it certainly didn't help their phones were missing removable batteries and microSD slot.

My HTC Desire C has both, and so does my wife's Desire S, IIRC.

I think the OP was right, one of HTC's major problems is the multitude of models they push. I'm all for choice and flexibility, but if there was really that much need for such variety then they'd be on top right now. The amount of money that must go into making that number of phones, stopping and starting production so often, R&D, must be astounding for a company of its size.

My phone has a gig of storage, excluding the micro-SD card slot. Not exactly a lot of music or photos. Admittedly I don't use my phone for either function particularly at the moment, but a lot of people do.

Come with me next time I drive across Europe.

You can stream all your music and videos, upload your photos and video you take as you go and use Google maps.

I'll stick everything on my SDcard.

We'll compare mobile phone bills afterwards.
