why do people care so much about SD card slot, I'll never understand. How hard is it to adapt and utilize home and cloud storage using blutooth, wifi, LTE and HSPA+.

If one travels a ton, learn to juggle between phone, tablet and laptop. It's really easy.

To those who "must" have 20,000 songs on their phone....I am speechless. I only carry flac files with me and 16 gig is plenty for myself.

Maybe you just don't have the range of tastes other people do. That's fine but don't judge others on how much music they might want to hear at a moments notice. 16 gigs isn't even good for just my apps so obviously we use our phones in different ways.

EVO 4G LTE got the JB update quite a while ago so me thinks ATT is at fault.

I've got the EVO 4G LTE. For the most part I love it. However, the Jelly Bean update borked Google Maps. My navigation has been effed ever since. Can't go more than a minute without crashing the app. I'm not the only one. How is Maps (or Navigation) working for you?

Come with me next time I drive across Europe.

You can stream all your music and videos, upload your photos and video you take as you go and use Google maps.

I'll stick everything on my SDcard.

We'll compare mobile phone bills afterwards.

It's not even that. You can't guarantee reception everywhere. On our road trip it's useful in the cities, but as soon as we get into the countryside? Eh...

Part of it is value - adding a 64GB SD card for $40 is a screaming bargain compared to what manufacturers force us to pay for greater onboard storage (Apple is what - another $200?).

Secondly - living in Manhattan, there are loads of times I can barely get data due to congestion, much less when I'm in the subway or in the basement of a brick building. I like having my entire library of music and all my recent HD movies at my fingertips - no loading, no stuttering, etc.

Thirdly I play music a ton and do watch a decent amount of movies while on the subway - all which being downloaded via LTE would drain my battery incredibly fast.

Maybe there is a time in the future where batteries last all day under heavy load, when connections let you access your libraries in the cloud with no lag or unavailability - but that time isn't here yet. Closer than a couple years ago sure, but still not ready.

Yeah my Note 2 runs 720p movies, if I actually want to put a couple on there its gonna eat up storage quickly, on top of a small music collection for school, and 8MP photos, and recording my own video at 1080p.

Also, I'm probably NOT going to resample all my own 1080p movies just to save a little space on the phone when it would take lots of time and tons of extra space on the computer. The Note 2 has the processing power to run them, they just wont look as good.
I'd like to be able to put a 32 gig card in there and a 64 gig if I ever get one.

Nothing beats local storage. No need to juggle. No hit on your data plan. Also there are times where I can't rely on an internet connection (trains, subways, planes).

Having my entire music collection on my iPhone is completely invaluable. If you don't feel the same, so be it. I wouldn't dismiss others who share my sentiment.

Another huge advantage to SD cards is when you travel and want to shoot a ton of photo and video but don't have the free space on your device to hold it all. Bring a blank SD with you on vacation, pop it in when you are out and about, and you are set.

I did a European delivery in Sept 2011 and I had zero issues without an SD card. The car has GPS, 8gigs of storage built in, blutooth music streaming from iPhone to the car, and USB flash drive connectivity. Mobile phone bill was $0 as we didn't have to make emergency calls, and only used Skype on wifi to communicate with friends and family. No SD card needed.

As far as watching HD movies on mobile devices...why oh why? I can only enjoy a good movie/show in theater, or my 55" Panny Plasma. I can understand movies on tablet in the air though.

It was a 3 week trip from Munich, to Austria, to Italy, to France and back to Germany. Then again, we didn't have to listen to 20,000 songs either because we were enjoying our vacation.

I seriously think some simply "want" the flexibility of having SD card. I understand that. I was one of them, but I also believe most people who "think" they "need" SD cards actually don't need it.

Just because you found you didn't need it really means nothing with respect to others. Again, with respect to music, I think it's incredibly short sighted to dismiss others for wanting their music collection to be available at all times. And trying to take a swipe and saying you were instead enjoying your vacation gave me a good laugh.

I'd argue that you took a risk by not having a phone in case you did have an emergency. With respect to both my work and personal life, I cannot rely on wi-fi for phone calls/communication.

My point is, your last reply just brings home what I was stating before. Just because you didn't find yourself needing certain things it really means nothing for many others. I agree that not everyone needs an SD card on their vacations, but to dismiss such a thing is also pretty ridiculous.

You mean you can work around not having one by micromanaging all the time and giving up an entire category of portable entertainment?

This is the talk of someone who's already decided what he wants to buy and is justifying it, not an honest evaluation of feature usefulness.

The Verges review on the HTC One came in. Battery life is bad.
After using a GNex on VZW, I'm sick of justifying battery issues.

Bad Battery Life == no buy for me. Too bad. Hopefully Samsung will get it right. From the Note 2 perhaps they will.

I'm sick of Verizon justifying specially made phones, locked down phones, gimped phones.. etc.. HTC is apparently folding to VZW and giving them a One phone specifically for VZW. Hopefully, it's something like how Samsung released the S3 which was the same across ALL carriers.

Anyway, I have the DNA, and this will probably be my last smartphone from them. Good build quality for sure, but the fact is that I just can't stand their insistence on releasing phone after phone after phone. They have showed no signs of changing that especially with the One coming out. It's going to be a phone that gets pushed to the front, and then dropped when the One+ comes out with a 5 inch screen later this year, and then they'll release the One Butterfly+..... etc.. They're annoying the hell out of me.

Brian Klug disagrees:

Besides the Verge are also the one that called the Droid DNA's battery life meager while praising the Verizon GS3 as above average, even though the DNA lasted longer on their test.

Brian would be more helpful if he, you know, actually posted reviews once in a while.

Why am I not surprised?

I haven't seriously considered an HTC phone since the Incredible 1, and that was returned within two weeks.

Standard HTC review no matter the phone.

Beautiful looking phone, great screen, dodgy battery life, SenseUI is meh! but improving, camera not as good as promised.

The HTC One's convex back looks really ugly next to iPhone 5. It didn't look so bad by itself in other pictures. I guess I will have to wait until I can see it for myself. Other than that (and the camera which still is a BIG question mark) the phone looks like a fine product.

So you don't need it, but other people can use that data.

There are those that want to watch HD movies or movies in general on their phone. I think that's stupid but go ask a few members out on AT. They do want that.

I'd argue that what's more popular than watching movies on a phone is taking photos and posting them on Instagram or Facebook. With 8MP cameras and higher resolutions coming, 1080p video, etc, taking photos and videos you can easily gobble up a 16gb storage. For example, I probably have already 8gb of photos and video on my iPhone 5 from November 2012. Throw on another 2-3gb of podcasts and you don't have much space left.

Now imagine I did this on my Android phone. Where's the space for my CM 10.1 ROMs, and kernels? Nandroid backups?

Today, with solid state memory prices reasonable, I'd like to see phones with 32gb minimum if they're not going to have additional storage space via external SD. HTC's already realized this. I'd like for Google to figure this one out on the next Nexus.

Between my wife and myself we have owned.

2 Desires
1 Desire HD
1 Sensation
2 One X's

Loved all of them, I get that they had a really stupid "scattershot" handset portfolio but things seem to be getting better now and if you actually researched the model you wanted rather than just walking into a phone shop blindly that really was a moot point.
