Damn. The 4MP was hard to deal with last year. Liveable, the low light quality was consistently good. But really HTC?

Wow, nearly half of the entire front is all speaker/bezel/wasted space. Look how high up the dock is...

Engadget's write up.
http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/25/htc-announces-the-new-one/

Looks like a Google Play Edition is confirmed as well. This is one of two devices on my short buy list, the Xperia X2 is the other. Giving the edge to HTC for their excellent software support for now. Not sure how things will pan out if there's a refreshed Nexus or new Moto X this summer.

Nexus phones don't launch in the summer.

Like the Z2, it's a brick. 160g (vs 163 for the Sony and 168 for the Note 3).

Actually, I think all the flagships have gotten too bulky this year.

The UltraPixel shooter around back is, for all intents and purposes, the same exact camera as last year. The sensor is the same four megapixel backside-illuminated one with giant 2µm pixels, but there's a new imaging processor attached and HTC has ditched the optical image stabilization tech. But, it's also added a second camera to the back in what it's calling a Duo Camera array. Truth be told, the second "camera" isn't actually a camera in the traditional sense, it's a depth sensor. It allows the One to perform all sorts of neat tricks especially in post processing, such as blurring backgrounds or changing the focus point like a Lytro.

Hmm, I was under the impression that the UltraPixel camera just didn't deliver in regards to what it promised. In other words, pictures from the cameras of other flagship phones were, for the most part, as good or better.

The second camera seems like a gimmick, something for the marketing department so they can put together some slick ads to convince people that the pointless features it enables are somehow worthwhile.

I really want to like this phone, but the OCD in me goes crazy every time I see that. The dock should be at the bottom of the phone, not a inch from the bottom.

If that black HTC bar was either gone (for a more compact phone) or all screen (making it at least a 5.2/5.3" screen), then it'd be great.

If they're re-using the same sensor I'd suspect it's just being cheap... or going through a lot of the stock they committed to early on. It's hard to be small and do totally your own thing.

If they really needed the bar, they should have put it on top for symmetry.

Android manufacturers really need to stop shitting bricks. 160g? Big bulky phones with huge bezels? The Nexus 5/Moto X is my limit folks. This phone seems unnecessarily big and heavy for nothing.
The same with the Xperia Z2 also.

Pretty looking phone, but would it have killed them to have put a decent camera in there?
Make it take good, basic photos first, then you can cram in all the gimmicks that you want.

The Sense dock on that render should be turned off. Not sure why its still there. People complaining about the bezels, keep in mind you get front facing speakers with it. Hard to go back to any rear speaker after that.

On weight, if an extra 20g of weight is a problem, might I suggest your spend your money on a pair a 2lbs old lady dumb bells from Walmart instead of a phone?

Google I/O is June 25th, not out of the question to see a Nexus launched. At a minimum, I'm fairly sure we'll see a new Nexus 10 there.

Defensive much?

HTC and Sony's problem is that at a certain bulk there's precious little reason to buy the small-screen device instead of the Note 3 or GPro 2.

They removed OIS from the camera. The M7 already had an overall inferior camera and now they're removing one of the two reasons why I'd even consider using the One's camera.

Defensive much?

It annoys me when people pick up an almost meaningless aspect to bitch and rant about. Its 20 grams. My house key weighs several times that. My pen weighs several times that. My retainers weigh more than that. The plastic eye drop vials I carry weigh more than that. The TPU case I slapped on my 2013 One weighs more than that. 20 grams worth of extra weight should not even factor into your psyche, especially when for that imperceptible weight you gain a metal bodied phone instead of the uber cheap plastic of a certain other big Android manufacturer.

People complaining about the bezels have a slightly better position, the black HTC bar makes the bottom look bad. Motorola's Razr HD line was similar because of the giant Verizon logo on the bottom. Ideally, HTC would relocate their logo to the rear of the phone and either eliminate that bar entirely or shrink it down considerably. The extra bezel from the speakers is a necessary requirement to support the speakers. Its sad that only Sony and HTC have front facing speakers . . . Samsung seems content to have their single mono speaker in the rear.

Looks like a nice phone. But like someone else mentioned, my OCD will have issues with that needless bezel on the bottom side. I really suspect the only reason for that bezel is just because marketing wants the HTC logo on the front.

If you are going to stick with that needless bezel on the bottom, might as well at least keep the buttons on it then. Now not only do we still have the bezel, we now also loose screen space to the on screen buttons (granted the screen is a bit bigger now).

God, I really want to love the phone, but that bezel is driving me crazy. And I apologize to those that aren't bugged by it, I realize I probably seem completely irrational to have this hang up. But it's my honest confession.

As for the weight. I think that's a non-issue to me. I've never picked up a phone and felt it was too heavy that I wouldn't want to use it. Oddly it was the iPhone 4 that I've probably come closest to having an issue with because that's quite a freaking dense phone for something so small. I don't mind a 5 inch brick in my hand. Sometimes I find it preferable to a super light piece of plastic that I fear might break when I put it in my pocket.

And HTC did a nice job with the look of the phone (other than the bezel). I like the colors, the curve of the back, very attractive.

Shame they didn't ditch that camera and go back to the drawing board. Rather than improving it, it sounds like all they did was add another gimmick to it. Changing the focus after shooting is that would rarely be used by me. Usually I focus on what I actually want to see before taking the shot. But sure, once in a blue moon it may come in handy.

htc one digitizer. note how the digitizer hardware extends below the screen. you wouldn't be able to put a front facing speaker there.

posting this again....
the space under the htc logo contains digitizer hardware. it's not empty space.
