Pichai: At Google I/O we announced a Google’s take on Android for Galaxy S4. We thought that was a small step in a good direction.
I’m carrying an HTC One in my pocket. This is running the core UI on Nexus phones as well.
Walt: Are you going to sell that?
Pichai: It’s going to be available on Google Play on June 26 for $599

If I ever get TMO to replace my defective One, I'll be happy. The One is a damn nice piece of hardware, but Sense UI is its Achilles heel.

Seriously, the Nexus Experience program is the greatest idea Google has come up with!

The one downside I've seen on the One, however, is that it's not AWS HSPA compatible. It does have AWS LTE though.

So if you're a TMobile customer and want the 'Nexus Experience', then you should really go with the SGS4.

So the one question I don't think anyone's answered for us is, are we going to lose out on the infrared remotes on the S4 and the HTC One Google Editions? Also, what about the camera? Is Google working with the companies to optimize the stock Android camera software to produce the images capable on the Sense/TW versions?

Dunno, did you already get a SGS4?

not yet. but both phones were in the running for my next phone.

SGS4 Pros
- Meh battery
- Great screen
- Removable storage, removable battery

HTC One Pros
- Battery life on Anandtech looks great
- Good size

HTC One Cons
- WTFbuttons
- Nonremovable storage, battery, but 32gb may be enough.

The battery issue comes up though because it seems like a lot of OS optimizations gave the HTC One great battery in the wifi test. How do both do on AOSP? Not sure. I'm curious as to how open both phones will be to development also. It's a Nexus experience, but how many drivers will be released for us to play with? How good are those drivers? Are they SGS2 quality where we couldn't do anything? Who knows?

indeed - it's basically the developer edition with stock google.

regardless, this will do wonders for the one dev community.

If you have the 64 GB version of the One, storage isn't an issue for the overwhelming majority of people.

I wouldn't see why not since you have an unlocked bootloader. Is there anything else that you really need for that to work?

uh oh... what do i do now?!
If you're the kind of person who complains about battery (and you are), either get the S4 or vow to stop complaining.

After your N4 experience, I'm surprised you haven't ruled all fixed batteries out automatically.

My HTC One is on Wifi for all but 3 hours every day, and between it and the GS4 and the Nexus 4, it had the worst battery life. Not significantly worse, but the worst out of those three.

the issue with the N4 isn't about fixed batteries though. You're talking about a bandaid solution which is carrying multiple batteries. The root cause is a software issue. I'm not too worried about the battery life on my iPhone 5 for example. That 1400mAh battery could be larger, but I'm not frantically looking for wakelocks or limiting use on a phone because it might not make it for the day.

The S4 does fine and so does the One. The question is how do they perform on AOSP because it seems every Nexus device so far fails on battery.

Interesting. I was a bit mistaken about the One doing so well on Wifi. It was the One X. It's hard to make solid conclusions when Anand's battery tests aren't apples to apples for the 3G/4G tests.

I've used the CM10.1 nightlies for a bit and battery life is still reasonable but subjectively slightly worse than on (customized) Touchwiz.

To be fair, I'm using a fairly advanced kernel on Touchwiz that isn't available on AOSP yet.

This is a great news in any way or shape or form. More choices for consumers.

No, I'm talking about the ultimate, brutally effective solution: an extended battery. With the official one (whenever it releases) the S4 will probably still be thinner and lighter than the One. Unofficial double-capacity ones are already out.
I'm not too worried about the battery life on my iPhone 5 for example.
The i5 is pretty resistant to one form of battery shortage (use), but not very resistant to the other (marginal reception areas). This may not be an issue where you live however.

I had thought to my self that if there is an HTC One Nexus Experience device, I'll buy it. Now I'm reading that it doesn't support HSPA+ on AWS, which means it's useless for me being on T-Mo

The thing is seeing how well the S4 performs in battery tests currently, there's no need for an extended battery. Even the HTC One spanks the Nexus 4. I'm not particularly worried about battery life based on those benchmarks. Real life use could be a different story, but that's subjective.

My concern with battery is whether slapping AOSP on these phones will kill battery life. If so, I don't think the proper solution is an extended or additional batteries--it's really to fix AOSP.

I sit in a 0-1 bar area at work and while both the N4 and iPhone 5 will drain to hell, the iPhone 5 does marginally better. Anyway, I think with the S3 and S4, users can pretty much go all day using the devices the way they want without compromises. On the Nexus 4, I don't feel that's possible. As long as the S4 Nexus Edition can accomplish what the stock S4 can in terms of battery life, then I'll be happy.

My battery is pretty good on my AOKP ROM except the fact that it has more trouble getting the signal.

All the HTC One's can be unlocked through HTC Dev I believe.

Should be able to flash the AOSP RUUs with minimal community tweaks, I imagine.
