If you've ever owned a Dell or HP computer versus building your own, you would understand.
If you're a "get a Dell" dude type and don't understand what's so special about building your own PC versus buying a Dell or HP computer, then there's not much explanation I can do for you.

Actually, I do build my own PCs. But this is a phone. I mean, I usually get rid of whatever I don't like but I really do like HTC's Sense. It's superior to the blandness that is stock Android. I can't be the only person.

And T-Mobile users: Don't rush to get this HTC One Google Edition just yet.
There are rumors spreading that the phone doesn't support T-Mobile's HSPA+ AWS bands. Given the fact that T-Mobile only has LTE in about 5-10 major cities so you will pretty much be stuck on 2G/Edge unless you have one of those refarmed spectrums that T-Mobile got from AT&T merger failure.
HSPA/WCDMA: 850/1900/2100 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
LTE: 700/850/AWS/1900 MHz (US)

This isn't a rumor. This is the One Developer Edition with stock Android. The One Developer Edition does not support 1700mhz HSPA. If you're on TMobile and considering a HTC One, you shouldn't be considering the Google version.

Maybe by the end of 2014 that won't matter but it totally does now.

So what's to stop people from grabbing a dumped ROM from this phone and putting it on their $200 subsidized One? The bootloader? If this is possible, everyone wins.

I heard there was this other guy who preferred non-stock Android but this may have just been a rumour.

Honestly, I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I actually dislike stock Android. But I also dislike the UI layers more.

Having spent some more time with a One, I think HTC might actually be hitting the prefect stride with the new version of Sense.

One of Android's greatest strengths, IMO, has always been the decentralization of it. It's starting to matter less and less about what version of the OS you're actually on. I look back at everything from Donut to JB and realize that Google had to accelerate Android very quickly. They were a year late to the game after retooling the interface for touch and it still took them 3-4 years to be where they really needed to be. Now that they've kind of plateaued Android development, the fear of not having the latest and greatest OS version has diminished greatly in my mind. I'm starting to be a lot more open to a handset with a skin on it. The latest versions of MotoBlur (I don't think they really even call it that now) and Sense are great. LG and Sony are just meh. Samsung is in wtf territory.

I have had the S2, S3, HTC One X, Nexus, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, , Note 2, S4 and Nexus 4. Some rooted, some not, some with Custom ROM's, some stock. The one I still use as my daily driver is the Nexus 4.

The Nexus 4 has it's flaws, low light/indoor pictures, battery life can be an issue if you are out for a full day running around, but in general day to day use it really is a great phone. It just "feels" quicker and more responsive with what I do with my phone than the other phones. My primary uses are: Surfing the web, texting, GPS/Navigation, phone calls, outdoor pictures. Other than that, I don't really need much more.

That being said, I found a HTC One that should be delivered early next week to see how that goes. I've only tried it out in the store and you really can't tell how a phone is for you unless you swap your SIM card to it and use it for a week or so in your normal life to really see how it works for you rather than a reviewer's point of view as we all use our phones differently.

I would guess I'll end up with an S4 Google edition in the end as the camera is excellent, battery can be swapped out and you can add storage via SD. My only real issues with the Nexus 4 has been battery life when I'm out running around for an entire day on a weekend and the camera in low light/indoors. Storage has not been an isssue for me as I just download what I need and then take it off when I'm done with it.

For those that complain about build quality, if you put a case on your phone then what is the difference? I carry my Nexus 4 naked with SGP Ultra Crystal front and back screen protectors as it just feels better in my hand than with a case. The S4 and most of the other phones before it had a Rearth/Ringke slim case as I didn't want to add much bulk but liked how the phones felt in the hand with it on. The S4 is actually too thin IMO.

iPhone 5 users who like to flaunt the build quality (which does feel awesome in the hand except it's too tall/skinny to me) and then carry their phone in an Otterbox Case really confuse me as if I put an S4 in an Otterbox what's the difference in build quality?

The HTC One though will most likely be caseless as it does feel great in the hand without a case, but I'll probaly look for a clear skin for it to keep the nicks/scratches off.

Are these iPhone 5 users the same users?

As in, one guy who is all like 'OMG, the build quality of the iPhone 5 is so amazing compared to a Galaxy S4' and then in the next breath says 'I totally use the Otterbox Defender case for mine. I want to make sure it's well protected."

Well, I dunno what you have now but the last update my gnex got greatly improved battery life. Biggest difference? Wake locks have reduced in number dramatically. It easily makes it 15+ hours now.

Also heard of the two big things Larry page is interested in working on, its battery life and fixability. So my guess is the next android version will improve on this.

well that's why i'd like for these battery benchmarks to be a standard that every user can test (just like Antutu and Linpack)....

Maybe if we could compare GNex 4.0 vs 4.0.1 vs 4.1 vs 4.2 for example, we could see it improve? The issue is we're basing so much about battery on anecdotal evidence:

"Phone A goes all day but Phone b doesn't"
"Custom kernel 1.593.4.32 doubled my battery life!"
"CM 10.1 will give you excellent battery life"
"Remove Sense, then your battery life goes up"

Not even sure what to make of all this.

I think wakelocks are more dependent on apps than the OS itself, but I may be wrong.

For those on TMO that want one of these, you should be able to buy a TMO version (I think it's $580 on the site), and then flash the rom that will be released for the Google Edition pretty easily. Once you do that, it will just be like you bought a Google Edition version.

Do you think once that was done, that phone would then get it's OS updates from Google? Or will we have to reflash the ROM everytime there is a release update?

It's going to be interesting how the S4 GE and the One GE fare against each other. TouchWiz and its lags are well known to many. Sense is smoother but it looks like large part of the ROM resides in memory which seems to cause battery drain.

You should get updates from Google.

Pretty sure you won't, the device is still a T-mobile device even with the custom ROM. The good news is any new roms from google will prolly have a rooted zip on XDA within a day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the HTC one has no LED notification light, right?

This is one of my favorite features of the Nexus phones and would be a deal breaker for me (not to mention the possible lack of HSPA+ bands)
HTC's LED notification light is complete bullshit.
Only 2 colors(red/green, no blue) and the LED notification is almost hidden behind some stupid grill that makes it dull and almost impossible to see.

Iono about AMOLED. If you properly calibrate an IPS screen, it's beautiful. BTW, did you tune your Nexus 4 colors? The Nexus 4 stock colors are absolutely horrendous. I did a full wipe last night and went back to stock for a while and it's just washed out and ugly.

I did the best calibration I could to get to Gamma 2.2 and to eliminate clipping, and the Nexus 4 screen is quite punchy. When stacked next to my gf's SGS3, I'd say the Nexus 4 does really well. I'd pick my Nexus 4 over the SGS3 when calibrated. It also outshines my SGS2. The only phone with a punchier screen is my Nexus S which can be calibrated.

If you looked at the HTC One X for example, that was a gorgeous screen against the SGS3. So as long as HTC provides decent color calibration for the Nexus Experience One, I'd say the difference isn't as big as you're seeing with the Nexus 4.

I guess opinions differ about the buttons, but I find Samsung's buttons to be great. The location may not be because its too close to the edge. However I'd rather have a permanent menu button. It's a customization I have to have in the CM 10.1 custom nav bar. Holding down Home to multitask is not a problem for me. I can still work efficiently. The One arrangement is just stupid and a 2 button layout just does NOT work for Android. With that said, I hope long-press menu gives "Search" capabilities on GS4. Is that how it works currently with Touchwiz? I remember that's how my GS2 worked. I honestly don't think Google's on screen button layout is perfect either. If anything, Android 2.x phones and 4 buttons were far more useful.
Damn well I did. CyanogenMod with Franco kernel. Red: 235, Green: 245, Blue: 255 with Franco's "recommended values" for Gamma settings.
My mom has everything completely stock (and non-rooted as well) on her Nexus 4. I see the washed out colors almost everyday and shake my head.

But even with my perfectly calibrated screen, I still miss many things about AMOLED...the high contrasts and sunlight visibility of AMOLED screens.
Galaxy S3 and S2 never really had an excellent screen to begin with. The screen on the Galaxy S4 is a massive upgrade from that.

True, I didn't change anything though and saw them decrease. It was significant reduction. Who knows maybe some apps fixed themselves.

You would get updates from Google. When gnex was released, flashing an international model with play store gnex firmware resulted in its getting ota updates from Google.

I'd be weary of how good camera performance is on the Google Edition of the GS4, I would have to bet that a lot of the camera performance is from optimizing the software, which we have no idea what extent Google and Samsung are going to do. The Nexus 4 and Optimus G have the same camera module and yet the latter is very much better than the former.
