Whatever HTC ends up naming it, I'm sure Verizon will just end up giving it a different name anyway. And while I normally hate it when Verizon renames phones (like the Lumia 930 being named the Icon), in this case it's okay.

Is this going to fizzle like the HTC Harmony? (also rumored announced a year back as a HTC One, Windows Phone version).

Who can say. Its all rumors at this point. I am a little surprised that HTC hasn't released any WP devices in a while. I know they're hurting for cash, but how hard/expensive can it be to simply put WP OS into the m7 or m8 hardware?

Fixed that.

Remember when there was a website for making up random crappy Android phone model names? During the heyday of the HTC/Motorola/Samsung Froyo-era wars?

929 and 930 are identical phones. I think they only changed the model number because Verizon was messing with it's name. And maybe it has different antennas.

You can still use any Verizon phones on AT&T or T-Mobile. You just won't get LTE.
With recent ones you *will* get LTE on T-mobile. (Also in AWS LTE area for AT&T, but those are pretty rare.)

How about the plastic version of the M8 as well for windows phone? It is supposed to be priced at $450 ish without contract. Not every phone user wants an awesome camera or wireless ac.

Only if its a 'world' phone model or otherwise has GSM radios. If its just CDMA and LTE, you won't be able to use it on ATT/TMO.

For the past two years or so they have all been world phones AFAIK.

May be the case, but you said 'any Verizon phone' not 'Verizon phones in the past two years.'

Even if they have GSM radios, don't expect Verizon to easily unlock it for you take it over to AT&T either. Verizon usually keeps a tight lid on it.

I was making a passing comment. Usually I do qualify it with 'Verizon 4G LTE phones released after 4Q of 2012'

That's what we've been saying all along, they are *all* factory unlocked right out of the box! Absolutely no restriction on the SIM card. This is because of some deal Verizon made with FCC regarding some bandwidth thing. Other people may be able to explain it better than me.

Then there's Nokia occupying the mid to low end. More bottom feeders are not what WP needs to see IMO, the 930 is not a true flagship if you compare against the rest of the market, and there needs to be more viable top-end stuff to grab eyeballs in the first place.

I'll touch on it for a brief moment.

When they were having the auction for the 700 MHz block, Google stepped in with a bid and specific policies they wanted adopted on the spectrum. Well, Google was outbit, but the FCC kept the restrictions on the block. Essentially, Google wanted open devices (unlocked), open applications (download any software/content), and 2 others that were nixed. FCC kept the open devices and open applications restriction resulting in forcing Verizon to keep all of their phones factory unlocked.

If Google weren't involved at all, we would be dealing with an even more controlling Verizon. The FCC requirements allowed consumers to actually have a slight upper-hand against Verizon for once.

You can have both cellphones on the market at the same time.

Cpu wise, ram wise, performance wise there is nothing different with the e8 vs the m8. What is different is a cheaper case, a worse camera, and an inferior wifi.
  • Camera: People who want the best camera bar none are not going to get the m8 anyway.
  • Wifi: The m8 is better since it can do AC, but both are dual band (2.4 ghz and 5 ghz) single stream wireless N so unless you want AC you get barely any loss.
  • Plastic vs Metal: Yes plastic usually feels inferior compared to plastic. Plastic is lighter though and has better network propagation, if you are putting both phones in a case, it is better to have a plastic phone.
  • Price: A $200 dollar price drop
Yes the e8 has some sacrifices compared to the m8 but those are sacrifices most people will be willing to make, especially since many people are often going to put it in a case anyway.

What Windows needs is not a halo product, what windows needs is eyeballs. Sometimes a halo product brings eyeballs, but a much cheaper price point also brings eyeballs.

What does the 930 lack? (Except a huge add campaign like Samsungs?)

Lags behind on:

- Weight
- Battery
- SoC
- expandability

etc etc

The OG One (and the metal body isn't the primary reason for it's strength: It's the use of plastic within the metal structure) showed that you don't need the additional bulk of Nokia phones to deliver practically Nokia-grade durability.

It's early days for the M8 and I see some design changes that may negatively impact durability... but apart from the arguable point of the camera, in terms of hardware it's definitely significantly more of a flagship than the 930.

OK... so really just an M8.

Cool, this'll probably be my next WP if it comes out as a global release phone within this year (and I don't mean December).

I hope they release a better designed dot cover to pair with it, but not holding my breath.
