If I can flash my M8 to WP. This would make M8 the greatest device ever.

Though, I doubt it.

HTC already pulled that off - the HD2 was the greatest device of all time.

  • It had a build quality FAR superior to other phones at the time
  • IMO, it's (at the time) unheard of 4.3" screen remains close to the perfect size
  • It could run WP 6.5, Android, WP 7....at the same time!! Doing a reboot to switch between Android and WP was amazing

If they could pull that off again....I'd buy it. But I'm not holding my breath.

Speakers look front facing, better for when I have the phone flat on a table when I need to look at the screen and listen to something to share with those sitting around me (compared to phones with the speaker in the back which I hate).

Other than that off the bat, it seems there is no physical space allocated to the Windows Phone icons, more like it is a part of the screen - I don't exactly like this, but this isn't a deal breaker.

If you have a physical camera button as your 8X before and a removable battery like the ATIV SE, it would be an acceptable phone. I just hope that HTC holds to supporting the device longer than a boyfriend's one night stand with a lady (8X's last firmware apparantly borked some features that HTC isn't willing to fix, but I remedied a bit with 8.1).

probably over-sharpened this a bit in PicSay Pro but besides that just applied a little bit of Boost. caught just after sunset.

May be the case, but you said 'any Verizon phone' not 'Verizon phones in the past two years.'

Even if they have GSM radios, don't expect Verizon to easily unlock it for you take it over to AT&T either. Verizon usually keeps a tight lid on it.

Verizon Q10 works amazing on T-mobile LTE in the NY/NJ area.

'Ported' does not mean 'runs well' :awe:

I don't think it will be too much of an issue. First, Windows Phone has been using Qualcomm SoCs exclusively (and typically runs well even on less powerful hardware), so there's no problem there. Qualcomm's SoCs also have a lot more of the hardware on-die, so there's less of a worry about working with exotic parts.

As for any other hardware that might be specific to the M8, I would imagine that Microsoft is giving HTC a lot of support on this project as it's a big deal for Microsoft to get more hardware partners.

It has been announced. HTC One M8 for Windows, not HTC One W8. It appears to be completely identical to the standard M8.

Woohoo. Another carrier exclusive Windows Phone.
If this phone is bought off contract (no subsidy) can it be used on AT&T or T-Mobile (or any GSM network) after being unlocked? Otherwise another huge fail for Microsoft.

It's a Verizon phone, so the SIM slot should be completely unlocked out of the box.

Can the carrier bloat be removed? I think I could "forget" about the branding on the exterior as long as I didn't have all the crap VZW software taking up space and resources.

I guess we're going to have to wait on that. I'm not familiar with WP, what kind of bloat does Verizon have on it?

Unsure of this specifically, I just have seen VZW android phones. I guess I'm waiting for an official review or to see one in a store myself.

All Windows Phones let you remove carrier apps -- that's actually a requirement. Android is the only major mobile platform where carriers can force you to take apps you don't want (Apple simply doesn't let carriers install bloat in the first place).

Good to know, thanks.

The only Verizon bloat on there (and even I don't consider this bloat) is an app for My Verizon, which is an easy access to your phone account and options.

And there is also pre-installed VZNavigator app (which it is Verizon insisting you also pay additional for voice navigated GPS mapping).

Both which can be removed without any additonal steps other than selecting uninstall; and is as deep integrated as any other Windows apps.

Once upon a time I had an HTC HD7 running WP7 on T-Mobile and it didn't have any Sprint bloatware when I got it from IT. I had the phone for 4 months before we moved to new phones on a new network. That's my entire life's experience with Windows Phone so I appreciate the reassurances about being able to remove unwanted apps.

ps - if it wasn't plainly obvious this phone interests me. But I'd prefer to be able to buy one without the VZW branding on it. Maybe some day?

The camera on the M8 is sufficient for me and my novice usage. The design language of the M8 lays waste to that of the Lumia Icon/930 IMHO. To me it is THE windows phone to get especially if you are already on VZW.

If it wasn't for the camera, I would get this over the Lumia 930. Really wish HTC dumped their UltraPixel tech after it failed in the first One.
