HTC One X $120 or SGS3 $200 on AT&T?

Going to upgrade, and trying to decide between the 2.

The lack of removable battery and SD card are not deal-breakers. I don't really see myself running out of space with 16GB, and I don't plan to swap batteries. They are still good things to have, though, especially if the battery decides to go bad.

My biggest concern with the One X is the apparently sluggish and half-baked Sense that it has. The SGS3 is supposed to be very smooth with TouchWiz, and this is important to me.

Then there is the 2GB RAM advantage the SGS3 has but I am not sure if this really matters.

Displays seem like a toss-up.

I guess I can root the One X but I am not sure I want to go through the trouble. Or maybe it is not much trouble at all and it would be worth the savings?

I own the One X and play with/have access to the SGS3 daily (work for AT&T) and I'm very happy with my One X purchase, got it on launch day. I loved the phone when it was stock and have since flashed a sense-based ROM (Clean ROM 4.1 SE). I use Nova Launcher now but had no issues when running Sense at all. I've since gotten over the lack of an external SD since I mainly stream from Spotify now. The free 25GBs from Dropbox is very nice and I use that as well. Battery life is pretty damn good, noticeably better than my iPhone 4S was so it's great for me. Camera is better than the SGS3 (only slightly but the extra features and UI are better as well) and side by side I much, much, much prefer (seriously I can't stress this enough) the One X screen to the SGS3 screen. And rooting and unlocking the bootloader to flash ROMs is a breeze. Full one-click apps and step-by-step guides available on XDA Developers.

Without flashing a custom rom, I'd go with the HTC One X. I own the Galaxy S3 and my brother owns the HTC One X and over all, the HTC One X is just better on stock in terms of usability. No lag and better UI compared to the Galaxy. The only reason why I'm keeping the S3 is the expandable storage and better battery compared to the HTC One X.

I read camera on SGS3 is better. But I'm sure you can find opposite reviews. Both are good enough.

One X piss poor multitasking is deal killer for me. 1gb ram is clearly not enough with Sense bloat.

Have you had a smartphone before? Battery swapping is awesome for many use cases.

That the camera on the HTC One X is better than the one on the Samsung Galaxy S III as you claimed.

Not sure how I can do that for you right now. Don't have a GS3 personally just took some side by side pics at work. Difference wasn't huge and probably just looked better because the screen is better on the HOX. When I get back to work next week I can take a picture and upload it for you if that would make you happy... Or you could just Google it.

Nope. I guess I can't really say how useful this would be to me as I don't really know how much I would end up using the phone. The 720p screen makes me wonder if I will end up using the phone as a substitute for my laptop for mobile web browsing and viewing/editing documents. Its mostly school stuff that I use the laptop for, it would be nice if I didn't have to carry it around even though its a rather light 14" one.

I already did.
All the reviews I saw stated that the Galaxy S III had the better camera.

Pretty sure the Engadget review preferred the HOX but I may be wrong. Its really not a huge difference but I personally prefer the Sense UI for the camera and being able to easily take pics from while recording videos which I'm not sure if you can do on tube S3. The burst feature is cool as well.

EDIT: There is a photo comparison thread on the general board on XDA as well if you wanna check it out.

The drop box free chuck of storage is no longer available with ATT or Verizon i believe.

I also have the One X.

Great battery, but to me the best is the screen. There really is no better screen out there, at least i haven't seen one yet.

If you like modding your phone i would say the S3 since the One X on ATT is locked down. Not even the NFC is open for google wallet.

The camera's close, but the screen on the HTC makes it seem that the camera has to be much better. It's unreal how much better the One X screen looks next to every other phone out there.

Sense UI for taking pictures is better than Samsung's TouchWiz Camera UI, but the actual quality of the pictures taken themselves(which is what ultimately matters in the end) are worse than the Galaxy S III.
Basically, Samsung's problem is a software issue which can be fixed by using a different camera app. HTC's problem is a hardware issue.

That said, many people don't give much of a crap about camera performance on smartphones.
I was only interested in your sources, that's all.

Galaxy S III feels much cheaper and looks cheesy. The one thing I liked about the HTC was the unibody case which Anandtech praised in their review for feeling great in your hands.

I always ignore the spec junkies on these forums since I flash all my phones with custom ROMs to remove all bloat.

I was using a first gen dual core phone from early 2011 until last month with Cyanogen Mod and it was as smooth as butter.

I'd get the One X if it had room for an SD, having played with both. It doesn't though. It's not so much better (in my opinion) that lacking an SD justifies it and if I were in the market I'd get the GS3 for that reason alone. If you won't use the storage, go for the One X.

In terms of camera tech specs, then yes the One X lens at f/2.0 is superior to the SGS III lens which is f/2.6. This won't make a difference in normal lighting conditions, but for low light photos without flash, the extra light gathered by the One X will definitely help in achieving lower ISOs.

PieIsAwesome: Since you're saying this is your first smartphone, honestly you will not go wrong with either choice. One thing is certain, smartphones have significantly less battery life than feature phones. If you commute or travel frequently, a phone with removable battery will definitely come in handy. Good luck!

^ My phone (GS2) only loses charge if I'm lazy. I have a cradle in my car (use it for music) and a charger at my compy. Leaving it asleep but on in my pocket, I lose maybe 5-15% through a shift at work. Battery isn't an issue unless you spend days away from an outlet or just forget to charge it a lot.

I agree with this. I really like the storage option (and removable battery) of the S3. Otherwise I perceive the One X as the better phone. However, I've only played with them in the store, I haven't lived with one day in and day out.

I will say in the S3's favor that you really can see a difference in terms of the screen size.

Touchwiz > Sense

Expandable storage >>> no option

Screens are the same to me, both look great

2GB RAM > 1GB RAM

it's because HTC set aggressive minfree values. 1gb is plenty...

One X.
Better camera, better construction and most importantly better screen.

expendable memory should not be a concern since both phones are crap as portable music players, and who uses a phone to watch movie anyway? Get a tablet for movies on the go.

2gb vs 1gb? You won't know the difference.

touchwiz vs sense? both are crap so you are stuck either way.
