Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase the final components as soon as possible, but first I wanted to kindly request any recommendations or suggestions on my potential setup. Here are my requirements for this machine (in priority order):

1080p flawless playback, whether it's bluray or .mkv downloaded HD content. I want to never see a stutter again while playing (Fast forward/rewind stutter OK). Other than this requirement, not looking for a beast-of-a-machine.

Upconversion: I want to enable software upconversion to 1080p for all of my existing DVDs

Power: Lowest power consumption available while meeting performance requirements

Games: I want to be able to play games on this computer, but it's not a necessity. I don't want to play hardcore 1080p games, I just want to be able to play Call of Duty 4 at medium quality/resolution. However, I think this will have to wait with the hardware choices I made.

DVR: Eventually I'm going to get a QAM tuner hooked up. I do have free digital cable and OTA signal in my area.

HDMI: I've got a 50" Sony SXRD projection TV that will only go 1080p on an HDMI connection

Audio: No real audio requirements, I just have an old school Receiver with no digital connections.

Price: trying to save pennies anywhere possible. So far I've put together these pieces has hot deals have arrived

Overclocking: I'll certainly do some minimal overclocking for the processor, but nothing crazy.

Hardware (going to buy):

Processor: intel E7200
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel

hardware (own already)
Western Digital 500gb Caviar Sata 2
4 gigs DDR2 800 OCZ memory (I think they're 800)
Antec 430 earthwatts PSU
Old ATX case

Software: Need to do some research here, because I really don't know what is available. I have a copy of XP Media Center, that's just because like I said, I really don't know what I should be putting on here.

(Everything to be bought in USA)
Budget for motherboard/processor: ~$250, but very flexible.

So as you see, really this hardware decision has come down to motherboard and processor, although if necessary I can swap out the other parts listed if needed.

My other consideration was going the ATI 790GX route, and I really wanted to because of the built-in mid-range gaming possibilities. However, reading reviews on the processor that would top the E7200 (i believe the Phenom quad 9600(??)) consumed much more power, didn't beat the e7200 by much, and the e7200 could be overclocked to surpass it. I only read one review though. However, it is a little bit cheaper to go the AMD route. I don't know, it's a tough call.

It looks like going the intel route will require me to purchase a discrete graphics adapter in the future, but I don't mind waiting for a 8800 GT to come down to around $50-60 and pick one up.

Well, what do you think? I'll look forward to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I find that's a tricky question too. I ended up going AMD because of the cost. For one, I read the 790G is only like an overclocked 780G. You end up with HD3300 integrated video instead of HD3200 which might be better for games but it's not a huge technilogical change. So, I ended up going with the 780G-based Asus M3A78-EM. Some people like the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H for 780G but I find Asus motherboards are easier to work with.

A cheap video solution right now though would be either the HD3850 or HD3870.

I decided to go cheap and get only an AMD Athlon X2 5400+ at 2.8 GHz. It's only going to be for 1080p video and it won't be my gaming machine. (I haven't received all my parts yet so I can't comment on how well it plays 1080p.)

That Asus motherboard by the way can take the Phenom 9950 which is a very impressive CPU. (On second thought, I just went through some benchmarks here on anandtech and tomshardware. The Phenom 9950 was very close to the Q6600. And there was like 20% difference overall in gaming between the Q6600 and 5400+ in all of the gaming benchmarks. Pretty amazing considering the price difference.)

If I choose to make this into a gaming machine though in the future, I could. I would just swap the 5400+ for a Phenom 9950 and then install something like an HD4870 or whatever. But I'm kind of thinking it might be more like HD5870 (when they become available like a full year from now.)

I'm not an AMD fanboi, I just find their prices are cheaper.

If you go the intel route the e7200 and and a G43/G45 board you can be under your $250 budget. If you go for e8200 or q6600 it will be a little under $300 bucks.

If your really trying to save money you should go AMD route, 780G motherboard plus a cheapie EE x2

I think you guys are right; I think that AMD might be the best route. I'm really not interested in getting a crazy fast machine. I just want to be able to run those 1080p videos, and from my understanding AMD X2's can do that just fine. I'm going to start looking for a 780g and processor combo.

Thanks for the insight.

What is the thermal power rating of the Phenom under load? When I built my HTPC I stayed away from AMD as they were way too hot compared to the core 2 duos. I wound up getting the E6400 (this was about 2 years ago I think). I use this HTPC since Nov. last year on my Verizon FIOS tv service which includes HD content and I have no problem processing the video. No stuttering or anything unless there is something else going on in the background which probably shouldn't be.

It is important to have a cool HTPC so you dont need whirly fans interrupting your movie experience
